AIBU to not pay plumber extra?

Having some work done on my house. Realized a few days before the tiler was due to start work that I hadnt ordered the tiles! Hastily ordered them and told the tiler I’d made an error and they wouldn’t arrive on time. He was due to start on the Monday and they arrived Tuesday morning. He’s had to push his other jobs back to fit me in as he had to start work on my house a day later than planned. He has now asked for an extra £80 to cover the fact he’s got to work the weekend to catch up on his other jobs that have been delayed due to my error and then work an evening to finish my job. Should I pay him this?

Yes. He's basically lost a day's work because of you.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 03/07/2025 18:39

Of course you should pay him. He would be within his rights you have you pay his full wasted day really. If you turned up at work and they told you that they didn't have anything for you to do you would still expect too be paid wouldn't you?

Tcateh · 03/07/2025 18:39

Yes

Spies · 03/07/2025 18:39

Of course you should pay him.

MarxistMags · 03/07/2025 18:39

I'd say yes. He is doing you a massive favour.

KillerMounjaro · 03/07/2025 18:40

Your title says plumber but the post only mentions a tiler.

But yes, you should. And I am no pushover when it comes to extra charges, so I don’t say this lightly.

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 03/07/2025 18:40

Of course you should! £80 sounds more than reasonable for the inconvenience at that.

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 03/07/2025 18:42

Yes of course you should! It's not even that much.
And what kind of muppet books a tiler but forgets to order tiles?!

selkieselkie · 03/07/2025 18:46

Of course. How could you possibly think you shouldn't?

MadamDicey · 03/07/2025 18:48

Yes

Spirallingdownwards · 03/07/2025 18:48

Yes and it doesn't even sound like a full day rate so you are getting a bargain.

MyCyanReader · 03/07/2025 18:50

Yes! Of course you pay.

You had a contract for him to work on the Monday and it wasn't his fault the tiles weren't there. He then had to work an additional day so you're paying for that.

DedododoDedadada · 03/07/2025 18:50

You are lucky he agreed to do it at all

Ylylyll · 03/07/2025 18:51

Yes you pay him - and 80 quid is an absolute bargain for that

Kimwestonhelpless · 03/07/2025 18:51

Yes keep him onside also handy for future works if it arises.

NoWomanNoBuy · 03/07/2025 18:53

Yes of course you should.

Jabberwok · 03/07/2025 18:53

If your boss rang today and said don't come in tomorrow and I'm not paying you for the day...

Christ some people...this is how this guy puts food on the table, pays his mortgage, he's done you a massive favour in juggling his life...that's HIS LIFE to cover your fuck up

Havingacrisiz · 03/07/2025 18:54

Thanks all! I was going to pay as I hate friction but also worry I’m always too much of a pushover !

Why would you paying make you a pushover? I also genuinely can't understand the logic that you're only paying to avoid friction. He's bending over backwards to accommodate you why would you be second guessing if you needed to pay

Why would it make you a pushover? It’s your error and your responsibility to pay him for work he does.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/07/2025 20:31

Of course you should. I’m too far from being a pushover at times and even I think you should pay.
