AIBU to feel self concious? DH seems to think so

Hi all. SS nearly 24 lives with me and DH full time,
which is a whole different bugbear - this is just my latest issue.
I have BIG boobs. I would like to be able to sit in my living room at night in just a thin cotton nightie, I’m menopausal and the flashes are horrible- the warm weather isn’t helping.
I don’t feel like I’m being silly by feeling very self conscious. DH said “he probably won’t even notice” but I feel soooo uncomfortable.
what would you ladies do?

I wear these round the house https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07M9BQRNT?ref=cmswrcsocpmwndp0FVHG5F1VG65CXHV44K7

I'm large chested too and I find them comfier than going bra less, so may be worth a try

Edited

These are great generally but I was mortified to see a sweaty outline of my nipples on my white T-shirt 😱 this was during the heatwave.

I wouldn’t care normally but I answered the door to my neighbour like it 😬 xx

Rosesanddaffs · 03/07/2025 15:32

@loopsaloo you are not being unreasonable, I hate being bra less infront of family. I know they aren’t perving but I hate the idea of them swinging freely as it’s so noticeable xx

Do you know what size a 36GG would likely be?

I'm a 32 HH and wear a large. So I think you should try the XL for a 36 back

CanINapNow · 03/07/2025 15:59

Black or busy pattern nightie will make boobs less obvious.

LittlleMy · 03/07/2025 16:34

@Jamesblonde2 When I absolutely must answer the door, I’m usually in very awful almost ragged (but comforting and cosy clothes and am single so no issues there) so have become expert at hiding most of my body behind the door whilst having full blown conversations! 😁

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/07/2025 16:37

Well you’ve only got three options-

  1. Dont wear a bra and try not to feel self conscious.
  2. Wear one.
  3. Sit on your own in your room.

All are fine although the third one is a bit anti social!

Theres no other option.

You can hardly banish DSS because you feel like you want you to wear something that makes you feel self conscious.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 03/07/2025 16:59

Well, assuming he's not actually doing anything to make you feel uncomfortable (beyond being there when you clearly wish he wasn't!) this is your problem. Either get over it, or wear more clothes <<shrugs>>

Eldermileniummam · 03/07/2025 17:02

If you feel uncomfortable just put on a bra or something but if you feel okay then don't

I don't usually comment on what people choose to post on Mumsnet but it's a bit ridiculous to me you couldn't work this one out on your own

Sunshineismyfavourite · 03/07/2025 17:03

You can get nighties that are very wafty and wont hug your boobs or show them off. You have a right to wear what you like in your own home.

Though obviously the main issue is why a 24 yo is still living at home.

Probably because he can’t afford to rent or buy his own place. Haven’t you heard about the increasing number of adult children who live with parents through economic necessity? Might not be the case here, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

ginasevern · 03/07/2025 17:27

Posters are saying he's family, but he isn't. He's a 24 year old, unrelated man. I wouldn't feel comfortable letting it all hang out either.

MadKittenWoman · 03/07/2025 17:42

Chill out. You’re his step-mum. You’re in your own home. And yes, in the UK it’s hot flushes, not flashes.

Why do you assume that the poster is British? This is the Internet, it’s international.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 03/07/2025 17:54

My kids friends are totally used to seeing me in various odd clothing around the house it doesn't even register with them. And I answer the door in whatever I happen to be wearing which might be a long t shirt in the summer or a onesie or oodie in the winter. The Amazon delivery man did once comment on my cookie monster onesie but only to ask where he could get one for his wife

I be surprised if the number of 24 year olds still living at home didnt outnumber the large breasted step mums worrying sbout going braless in flimsy nighties by a significant margin. What with the CoLC and housing shortage and whatnot. So it's probably reasonable to think the issue of interest is the OPs clothing dilemma, not where you think 24 year olds should be living.

Funnyduck60 · 03/07/2025 18:11

My adult son 23 is still at home so I know what you mean. I stay in the bedroom in front of the fan with the curtains shut. I'm 63 and still get too hot. My DM would strip down to her slip in an evening which was most embarrassing when I brought people home!

Withdjsns · 03/07/2025 18:14

I think it’s your house don’t worry but also if it helps I often wear non wired ones in the evening that are more like supportive crop tops

Feelingleftoutagain · 03/07/2025 18:42

I have big books too and wear a cotton vest and cotton shorts, as the hot flushes are dreadful, I also live in a male dominated house and it's never been an issue, maybe you are over thinking?

Give him a flash, he might move out

Sorry but...😂

InjuryMyArse · 03/07/2025 20:13

I've got these, or Primark does a cheap option. Has a bit of support and coverage, to wear with shorts or pjs in the heat.

I sat like a hippo in bra and pants to manage the heat the other evening and MIL walked in on me. Fuck it! Life's too short.
