My grandson is 4 and loves all the Jurassic Park movies and is obsessed wirh dinosaurs. The movie is a 12A which means I can take him but just wondered if you would think it unreasonable if you saw a 4 year old at a 12 movie.

Not to pick on you specifically but surely he would have loved it even more when he was older and better able to comprehend it? Why not show him other cartoons and films with dinosaurs in?

Mine is 12 now and still loves all the Jurassic parks and worlds. He watches them over and over again and camp cretaceous on netflix. He was fine watching them when he was around 4 or 5. Some kids wouldn't be. My eldest didn't like them and still doesn't.

I've been and seen the new JP film this afternoon with my 17 yrs old; there was a young child watching the film, maybe 3- 4 yrs old.

Whilst the child didn't seem upset by the blood and gore, they were unsettled. I personally don't think a 4-year-old should see this film; there were parts that made me cringe as an adult.

It's great that he enjoys it still but that didn't really answer the question though? He wouldn't have enjoyed it any less by waiting until he was older and whilst he still loves the franchise why risk him not liking it and enjoying it when older by showing it to him when he was still so young? It's not like it's the only dinosaur related film choice?

Because one of them was showing on tv at a relatives house when he was around 3 years old and he was absolutely entranced by it. He then asked to watch the others and I agreed to it because I’d seen them all and knew there wasn’t anything in them that would frighten him/worse than what he’d already seen. He fell in love with dinosaurs at a year old and he still adores dinosaurs now at 7 years old. It was the right time for him to see them, but that may not be the case for other kids.

No idea. I let him watch it when he was young because he'd watched everything dinosaur and I was around the same age when I watched Jurassic Park.

I made the decision, as his parent. He sat there transfixed. If he didnt like it or was distressed then I'd obviously have turned it off. He used to sit watching them all back to back whilst playing with his hundreds of dinosaurs or drawing.

He is the most empathetic lovely boy now. So I don't think I buggered the kid up letting him watch it.

I saw the original Jurassic Park at the cinema when I was 5 and it scared the living shit out of me! I wouldn’t be taking a 4 year old to see it at the cinema due to the huge widescreen and volume. He’s very young still and it probably doesn’t seem as scary to watch from home.

To anyone thinking that somehow 12A films are okay to take a four year old to, have a look at what gets rated 15 these days. If 15 is the new 18, then 12A is likely the new 15

Regardless, I'm not sure why anyone would take a 4yo to a film without actually seeing it first. That's the genuinely crazy bit here

At least pirate it first. Trailers don't show you everything

Why would you risk showing someone so young this stuff though ?

What do you actually have to gain by it ?

If a young kid is unaffected by it then that's exactly the same as if they haven't seen it. If they are it could result in significant issues.

There is plenty of time when they are older to introduce them to this sort of stuff. It's not going to irreversibly harm their development by putting it off for a few years, surely.

Because he likes dinosaurs now. A few more years and he won’t be bothered about them anymore and will be into something else.

It wasn’t a risk, I was certain it wouldn’t cause him any harm because I know my son. I know what scares him, what plays on his mind and what worries him. There are programmes on CBeebies that I don’t let him watch, but I bet lots of parents let their children watch, because I know what he is scared of and I know what will stick in his mind.

And as I said, I didn’t let my oldest watch it because I know him as well and I know he could have been upset by it. If I’d had any doubts at all about DS2 I wouldn’t have let him watch it.

It’s not the same as if he hadn’t seen it, because now he’s had the enjoyment he felt at seeing it. He has JW toys and plays games pretending to be Owen or Blue. He’s built the Lego, read the books, played the games. We’ve been to the exhibition twice and been to Universal Studios. So he’s had all that enjoyment too.
I don’t think he would have enjoyed those things as much if he hadn’t seen the films, and I don’t think he would enjoy them as much in a few years because by then he’ll have moved onto something else (He’d already rather watch Andy & The Band than Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures these days)

We did too (me and my now 9yo ds). Certainly not the most entertaining of the franchise. Mahershala Ali was a nice treat though 😁

As an early years teacher I find it really odd that your grandson has watched all these movies multiple times and yet he is only 4. I'm also not sure why you even asked for opinions as you seem set on taking him.

I honestly don't understand why some people feel the need to rush young children into seeing such films. What's wrong with cartoons and classic kids films, he's got his whole life to watch more grown up stuff.

This

It's totally not suitable! I can't believe people are suggesting it's ok. I would think twice before taking my nine year old. At four there's a lack of understanding of language and context that means the scares affects the learning brain more than if it was you or me watching a scary film.

Also I would be annoyed by having such young children in the cinema as a member of the public, it's a different atmosphere.

NJLX2021 · 04/07/2025 01:27

Please don't...

Saw it last night. Enjoyed it.

But they have gone in a very horror/monster inspired direction. Really intense and somewhat scary parts.

No way I would have taken my young son to it.

JJMama · 04/07/2025 20:32

Literally just watched it and my two would’ve been scared at 4. All depends. There were younger kids there but not that young. I guess fine if he doesn’t get nightmares and can keep quiet.

selkieselkie · 05/07/2025 08:25

I don't think it's suitable for a 4 year old. It's not bloody or particularly gory but the plot is convoluted and revolves around getting blood samples from dinosaurs to create drugs for treating heart disease. It takes a long time to get going and there's very little dinosaur action until quite far into the film. Many of the dinosaurs are mutations and the main scary one doesn't look like a real dinosaur at all. And there is mild swearing too.

K0OLA1D · 05/07/2025 08:28

I thought there was a lot less gore in this than some of the others tbh.

I dont think 4 is old enough though to watch it at the pictures.

We enjoyed it! It wasn't obviously as good as the originals and me and DS guessed who and in what order they'd get eaten correctly 🤣

It was hilariously predictable! I did think the raptors were going to get a meal though...

User32459 · 05/07/2025 12:37

Not seen the others but I got taken to watch the first one in the pictures, I would have been 7 or 8 at the time, and was terrified.

Tooty78 · 05/07/2025 13:13

Watched it last night, they really should have stopped after Jurassic World.

Ah no. I called that too. But I did say to DS its never a good sign when someone needs the loo 🤣
