To think I'm done with Eurocamp?

We have done many holidays to a European destination over the years and started out using a company called Al Fresco who we were very happy with. Staff very welcoming, would take you to your accommodation, pop in the day after to check you were all good, then visit again the day before departure. Site was very spacious between caravans, lots of space for kids to play.

They were taken over by Eurocamp post covid and we visited the location again in 2023. Lots more caravans had been installed, making the open spaces minimal so there's now about a 2m gap between the caravans, making it very claustrophobic in feel. Minimal interest from the staff, hard to get hold of anyone if there were issues.

In addition, they had an expectation on guests to do a full clean of the caravan. Property had a tiny plastic bucket (too small for the mop) and when DH was cleaning the floor the bucket tipped and sent hot water over his foot. Thankfully he had trainers on so wasn't hurt. We were instructed on day 1 to wait at our accommodation until the rep arrived to do a cleanliness iinspection, which we did. She commented on how the floor wasn't fully clean and might need to retain our housekeeping deposit, to which DH got annoyed and told her he had almost had an injury due to their substandard cleaning equipment. He also had to use our own towels to mop up the excess dirty water which took time so yeah, it maybe wasn't 100% sparkling. She backed down at this point and apologised.

We would like to go back to this place next year but we're tempted to use their own accommodation instead. It's more expensive but we feel it would be worth it, their customer service seems better from what reviews we've read anyway.

I get that they were maybe recouping costs lost from covid by plonking more caravans into their spaces on the site, but all those personal touches vanished along with Al Fresco itself and it's definitely not the same. Or is this just what's to be expected from companies these days?

Just book direct with the site then? Although be warned, many of them have strict cleaning requirements unless you pay for an end of stay clean (or it comes free with the higher end caravans).

VirginaGirl · 03/07/2025 10:12

You don't sound very independent and the hot water on the foot thing was just an accident, a small spill. Who put the hot water in the bucket in the first place?

There are hundreds of alternative campsites in Europe you could choose from.

SaturdayDream · 03/07/2025 10:14

It doesn’t sound like much of a holiday but you picked it.

ilparadodosdoltos · 03/07/2025 10:14

No I think that’s insane. I used to work for them years ago and cleaning the tents was just my job. You’re supposed to be on holiday. Nearly everyone left them in a perfectly decent state for me. You’re not expected to mop your hotel room are you?

TimeForTeaAndG · 03/07/2025 10:15

A cleanliness inspection?!

Just go somewhere else with a cleaning crew and no expectation of you not leaving when you're ready to go!

averylongtimeago · 03/07/2025 10:15

Most campsites also book accommodation directly- it is possible to check their reviews and t&c’s before booking.
Obviously you will pay more for a bigger chalet/pitch/tent.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 03/07/2025 10:20

We had the opposite with EC last year in France. Lovely, very spacious campsite... I assume with your accommodation it depends very much what you booked in terms of space. Ours had plenty but others looked a bit more crammed. Staff on site were friendly and accommodating. No deep clean at the end, no inspection and no housekeeping deposit either.

However, their UK customer service were atrocious at best.

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2025 10:24

It was like this in France in 2012 and they kept on about cleaning everything , even the horrible rusty bbq!
They were popping round all the time, put me off going again although the actual camp wasn’t too bad.

VictorBaucherOrSomething · 03/07/2025 10:25

Not France unfortunately. The site, when we went in previous years, had plenty space between caravans but same area was crammed with extra caravans when we returned a couple of years ago.

Sounds horrible tbh. An inspection would be enough to put me off.
Definitely book elsewhere.

When we first went with Eurocamp the end of let clean was included as standard. Now it is only for the premium accommodation.

Mind, even when it is included you may have to remind staff that you won't be entertaining an inspection. On a couple of holidays we have had staff try to convince us that we would be doing the cleaning. On one occasion we thought the staff were CFs as none of the accommodation with that company required guests to perform end of let clean. On the other holiday it was probably just a mix up.

When we have been with direct campsite bookings you have either had to do the end of let clean and wait for inspection or book a clean with the campsite. When I did the latter the reception person looked at me like I was insane 😀. Couldn't understand why I wanted to pay for something I should be doing myself.

Generally the better the accommodation the better the pitch. As with all holidays, do your research. Eurocamp, Canvas, Homair, Vacanceselect are all in the same group now so their offering is starting to look more homogeneous.

FusionChefGeoff · 03/07/2025 12:02

We book direct now - always get nicer accommodation. Might cost a bit more sometimes but seeing as we’re looking at 4-5k for 2 weeks for 4 with 24 hr overnight ferry a couple of hundred to give us the real premium experience seems worth it.

xILikeJamx · 03/07/2025 12:08

We've done similar holidays but never booked with Eurocamp. I generally use their website to help me find places but then go and book direct with the site.

I've noticed that it's very much a thing in France that you have to clean the place at the end of the stay (unless you pay for the top level accommodation) but it didn't seem to apply to any other country. Not sure what was different about France that you had to do the cleaning yourself.

What country was it OP?

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/07/2025 12:53

This has always put me off France! The idea that you are staying in a place that has been cleaned by the previous occupiers Sad - that's just not good enough for me I'm afraid.

Yikes I was hoping it wouldnt be. Was it Schatberg? I am currently looking at that one as Eurocamp is so well priced. Did not know we would have to await an inspection.

YetAnotherNewUserMoniker · 07/07/2025 13:30

I am not sure if it’s just a Eurocamp thing; we stay at a site in France that states the same or you can pay for an end of stay clean. We booked the clean last year and will again this. It’s enough hassle trying to pack and get everyone out of the accommodation on time without then trying to clean to the ridiculously high specification that is required.

I agree, the one time we had to do the cleaning (in France) it was tantamount to a military inspection. In fact DH and I refer to it as 'Marching Out'.

Jijithecat · 07/07/2025 14:25

We go on similar holidays but always book through the owners and pay for the accommodation to be cleaned.
No way am I ending a holiday by cleaning the place.

GingerBeverage · 07/07/2025 14:32

This is why many people around the world choose hotels.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 07/07/2025 14:33

I heard something similar from someone else OP about shoving extra people into sites. It's very disappointing. Last time I went we had a choice between cleaning or paying to have it done for us, so we paid extra. It's really bad that they expect the previous person to clean for the next, surely there should be a cleaner even quickly sanitising in between stays.

As for the mop incident I don't get how it's relevant. Your DH put hot water in a bucket then knocked it over, that's not for anyone else to take responsibility.
