To think I might be missing something to have totally had my head turned to Aldi?!

I used to shop mainly in Waitrose, sometimes Tesco or Morrisons.

A couple of weeks ago I nipped into Waitrose to get three pretty mundane items and it came to 17 pounds. I decided enough was enough and it was time to see what else was out there, having previously been adamant I wouldn’t be interested in somewhere like Aldi (yes a bit of a snob when it comes to shopping!).

Anyway, after a few trips to Aldi I am shocked. Incredible and tasty fruit and veg. Great meat options. Biscuits ok. Great middle aisle of books for my daughter. The cost reflects something more manageable and I don’t feel I’m spending huge chunks of money like in Waitrose and Tesco.

I am obsessed 😅

Am I missing something?! Why doesn’t everyone shop there?!

I have been shopping in Aldi for a while and have noticed the prices creeping up every time and not just a few pence. Done a home delivery from Asda last weekend as I was working and it came to near enough the same price, Aldi just isn’t that cheap anymore as much as I like it

I really dislike Aldi. Have been to a few different ones in different areas and, in every case, the fruit and veg were awful.

The only time I opened a pack of mushrooms to find the underneath ones were mouldy and slimy was when I bought them from Aldi. I have been buying mushrooms every week for at least 20 years from just about all the supermarkets.

It is also impossible to do a full shop there. We eat lots of lentils, chickpeas, different beans etc and Aldi either don't sell what we want or only sell silly small packs of them. They also have a stupidly small range of herbs and spices

Our isn't great to be honest. Seems to be mainly ready meals and processed foods. Fruit does not really last. Veg is a bit better. I have never bought meat there but have heard it can be hit or miss. They rarely seem to get in what is advertised in the leaflet. The staff are lovely though.

Our local Lidl is much better.

Can't get enough of their raspberries in the last few weeks! I don't know if they pack them differently or handle them differently in shipment or what but from every other supermarket they're a mushy mess in a day or two or even on the shelf. The Aldi ones are delicious, not beat up and will last several days.

Aldi does seem to have got more expensive in the last 6 months or so though. We used to figure it was a good 30-50% less than when we'd do a shop at Sainsbury's, now it's maybe 10% less.

BIWI · 03/07/2025 18:25

TBH, everywhere has got more expensive recently!

Picked these up today from Aldi! Can’t believe the size of them

Ime the fruit and veg isn't great. Turns very quickly. Meat is ok. Biscuits etc fine. Couldn't do main shop there.

This fruits and vegetables donot last unless you have a large family and eat them quickly, household stuff ok, dairy ok but can't do a complete week shop there.

Lidl is better.

It varies. In our town the Aldi is way better. Can’t do a main shop in the Lidl.

VegQueen · 03/07/2025 20:11

I enjoy buying what I can from Aldi (usually get the organic or specially selected veg where possible) and then top up on bits they don’t sell in Waitrose. Tried doing it all in Sainsbury’s instead but I think the Aldi Waitrose combination is better and the same price. I find the veg in Aldi is fine but some fruit I do prefer in Waitrose (grapes, apples).

JustSaying10 · 03/07/2025 20:12

I like Dunnes.

It seems so variable everywhere
my friend said she hated Morrisons then went to the one near me and loved it. I didn’t like Aldi, then our new one opened, but our Lidl isn’t great

the staff are amazing, I went in for some plasters/antiseptic after helping at a car accident, one of them who I see every week asked if I was ok and then gave me a huge bunch of flowers

What are people doing to their fruit and veg to make it go off so quickly?! No matter where I shop nothing goes off before it’s made it through the door…
The majority of food products supplied in the UK come from the same manufacturers, regardless of which supermarket you get it in. Supermarkets will have their own specifications and recipes for certain products (hence why own brand versions often contain less salt and/or sugar - cheaper to produce) which is why we can sometimes tell the difference but 9 times out of 10, it’s marketing and nothing else!

wherever I buy fruit and veg it gets treated the same. Lidl just doesn't last as well.

I shop in aldi, buy most of my food there. But never buy the fruit and veg as its appalling.
