To think having a baby in September is maybe the worst time?

I’m a September birthday but neither of my children are.

But I was thinking … heavily pregnant in a hot summer and an extra years childcare to pay for.

I know September births have an academic advantage but on balance I think my least preferred month!

Speak for yourself, I love my December birthday! Always have.

Also midwife here and can confirm September is and always has been the busiest month for maternity units, we batten down the hatches late Aust every year! 16th and 17th September are statistically the most common birthdays to have.

I was 9 months pregnant in the 35° heatwave in 2022. I honestly have never been more uncomfortable in my life. Pure torture

Me too. Awful.

Probably based on averages in state schools.

If that research were true only autumn born children would ever attend top universities. Few summer burns would become doctors, barristers, accountants, etc.

I wonder if you could link to the research.

Impact of birthdate on academic achievement

There are fewer summer born children at Oxbridge, there's an impact on sporting achievement as well. Obviously it's not the only factor: class, socio-economic background, parental education level, neurodiversity, not to mention raw genetics all impact educational achievement. But to compound those advantages middle class parents are more likely to be aware of the birthdate impact and have the financial resources to be able to take the financial hit of an additional year of childcare so are the most likely to plan the birthdate of their child for maximum educational benefit. In the same way that in Scotland middle class parents are more likely to hold back their children so they start later and have a massive educational advantage on their lower class classmates who weren't held back due to financial factors.
