We all had notes on our lockers this morning about our work and praises. Like a staff morale kind of thing with nice messages. Mine said the words ‘’silent superhero’’ and some nice things about always supporting others etc. What would you take silent superhero to mean?

It means you go above and beyond making a positive contribution, quietly without seeking praise or recognition for it.

Its a very nice message to receive.

randomchap · 02/07/2025 15:03

That you quietly go around doing great work without crowing and boasting about it.

Rispknee · 02/07/2025 15:03

It means you quietly go about making a difference that has been noticed.

I have to say it was a very brave action by whichever manager decided to do it!

VirginaGirl · 02/07/2025 15:03

You help people out a lot but you don't brag or except recognition about it.

CoffeeCantata · 02/07/2025 15:04

I'm sorry, OP - I'm sure you're a great colleague and this remark isn't meant to insult you, but that is just awful, patronising, primary-school teacher bollocks!

Who on earth thinks of these things? How old are they? Do they know they're addressing adults?

I speak as an ex-teacher, and it's just the kind of thing a teacher might do for their (very young) students. Ugh.

How do you mean?

OP posts:
DiscoPig · 02/07/2025 15:05

Could mean anything. Could mean you never speak in meetings but are silently effective. Could mean you are superhumanly strong. Could mean that you show up on dress-down Fridays in a lycra suit and cape. Could be a completely meaningless bit of nonsense because whoever was responsible for writing the 'staff morale' post its couldn't think of anything to say about you?

Surely if you know whoever came up with this stuff, you'll have a good idea?

NotWorthTheHeadache · 02/07/2025 15:05

I would take it to mean that you keep your head down, there’s no ego, you just get on with your work but that your work is also integral/valuable to the success of the wider team, hence the superhero bit. I think it’s quite a lovely comment. Are you thinking otherwise?

JMSA · 02/07/2025 15:05

That you are someone who gets on with the job in hand, in a calm, efficient and non-braggy way. You don’t seek validation from others, and you’re a coper.
It’s a good thing!

squashyhat · 02/07/2025 15:06

Sounds like something from a Christmas cracker or the chatGPT box of meaningless compliments.

Well, I have an idea but not 100%, it was like anonymous messages

It's one of those things that means we'll, but has lots of potential to go wrong - like you analysing looking for a hidden meaning.

greencartbluecart · 02/07/2025 15:11

You just get on with stuff that needs doing and don’t make a fuss about it

Are you trying to find some negative in this? Because most people would take this as the compliment that it's intended to be.

Jamesblonde2 · 02/07/2025 15:14

It means you work hard and don’t seek attention for it.

No, not trying too. Just wanted opinions on what it could mean as I wasn’t sure

Yes, exactly -- it was reminding me of some time when a well-meaning but dopey teacher during my secondary schooldays got us doing this, a sort of Secret Santa where papers with a name were passed around and everyone wrote an anonymous compliment for the named person.

Of course, it was a total car crash with some of the more unpleasant girls subtly mocking the unpopular and plain. I remember hearing one plump, shy girl crying her heart out in the toilets because her paper had 'Great figure' and 'Really popular' etc on it.

Whoever the manager is has clearly gone to the effort of trying to be nice to everyone. You might not be trying to find something negative, but you clearly have if you're even asking the question. You are really overthinking this.

Elevenor · 02/07/2025 15:18

I would take it to mean you are great at your job but quite quiet. I'm sure whoever did it means well but messages like this can so easily be misconstrued. If someone is self conscious about their shyness, for example, this would potentially be upsetting to read.

Even if, as presumably in this case, all the comments are genuinely complimentary, you'll still get people thinking it might be backhanded, or someone has a better or less deserved compliment.

It was brave...

You must have something niggling you OP, because the message itself (on the face of it) is pretty self explanatory. I mean, presumably you actually understand the individual words, like "superhero" so tell us what's really on your mind.

Thanks. I’m not loud but I chat to everyone when possible and get on with people

OP posts:

Just not always as out going as some, like loud or whatever

Is the person who you suspect wrote these comments more of an extrovert?

Try not to let it bother you, there's absolutely nothing wrong with not being the loudest person in the room. It sounds like you're recognised for being good at what you do which is what's important.
