Lactulose not helping 9 week old

stmirren1 · 02/07/2025 13:09

My 9 week old has been prescribed gaviscon and while it is helping the reflux it is making her very constipated. She has been prescribed lactulose 2.5ml x2 a day but her poos are still solid and she appears uncomfortable all day. Does anyone have any advice ? Would it be safe to give more lactukose than recommended until I can get an appointment at the dr tomorrow. Does anyone have anything else that worked for them?
Thanks

If you are breastfeeding there may be something you can eat/ drink which will pass through to baby and help.
I sympathise with you my son struggled terribly with constipation as a baby :(

Are you giving the full gaviscon dose? We found only giving 1/4 - 1/2 dose eased the reflux without causing as much constipation. That was the case for both my DC so I suspect its more common than the manufacturers dose suggests.

We found Gaviscon horrible stuff. Poor baby was uncomfortable all day with constipation, removed the reflux but caused another problem instead!

I feel like instead of getting to the route of why your baby has reflux, they offer medication. I would push to find out if something In your BM or formula isn’t agreeing with your baby then go from there.

Instant carobel helped us too

Yes go to gp and ask for Movicol sachets it’s much more gentle. I’d avoid lactose at all costs from previous experiences with my baby and myself!

No, don't give your 9 week old child more lactulose than is recommended!!!

Movicol worked for our daughter too, she ended up taking them daily for nearly a year. Maybe ask your GP if it would be better for your little one OP?
Admittedly our daughter was about 9 months old when she started taking it so it could be your baby is too young?

Have you attempted a warm bath? My baby always went as soon as they was in the water. Please do not give more medication than you are instructed to give. More does not always = better. Your baby digestive system is so new.

Didimum · 02/07/2025 14:07

How long has she been on it? Lactulose takes 5-7 days to start taking effect.

You can get tiny little glycerin suppositories, only thing that worked for mine. 1g for babies under 12 months.

Oh really? So still a sachet for each bottle but maybe 1/4 or half? I will try that thank you x

Sorry, do you mean a full sachet in a bottle then miss a bottle and so on? Or do you mean half or a quarter of a sachet in each bottle ?

We started with a third sachet per bottle and then mostly used to do half a sachet per bottle. Then I think we went up to a full sachet per bottle around 5-6months? It was obvious we needed to as the reflux started getting severe again.
