Fuck this fucking heat

I’m in the SE and this current heatwave has been utter hell. I have about 10 extremely itchy mosquito bites from being forced to sleep with the windows open as it’s so darn hot. I say sleep, but I’ve been waking up in the night absolutely sweltering and am shattered as a result. Having the windows open also means I can hear every car on the street and every noise the neighbours make, further disturbing my sleep.

I’ve had sweat pouring down my face for most of the day as my commute was like a furnace and our office air con is barely adequate.

There have been endless flies buzzing around the house and garden and around my cat’s food bowl. The cat is suffering in the heat and was sick in the garden and about 200 flies landed on that. I had to scoop it up just before eating dinner - grim.

At work I can barely concentrate due to the aforementioned lack of air con. My brain just feels fuzzy and like it can’t function properly. I have zero energy and feel irritable, grumpy and impatient.

The garden has turned to dust - most of my flowers are dead and the lawn is yellow and crispy.

On top of all that shit and most importantly, the whole thing poses seriously worrying questions about climate change, whether this is the new normal and if it is, what sort of future my kids are going to have.

England is not built for these temperatures. Thank fuck it’s going to rain tomorrow.

I hate it at night and not being able to sleep.
im seriously considering investing in an air con unit for next year!

If it doesn't have a pipe at the back, it basically isn't air con. Why was anyone running that?

Edited

Exactly my comment to the dentist and her assistant. They laughed and said "oh it hasnt got the hose attached"
Well yes..... I gathered that.
Trying to get them to understand the pointlessness of it was such hard work I gave up and sat down to have my teeth looked at.

3C31M · 01/07/2025 23:56

Great post from @VehicleTracker77. Thanks.
I was about to suggest a tepid shower, not drying off then straight into bed to cool down.

Watermelown · 01/07/2025 23:59

Wax earplugs doubled up for sleep - complete silence. Get double sided sticky tape and stick canopy type bed curtains to the top of the window frame. Open the window as wide as it’ll go, shove the material out through the window and then put a fan on level with the open window facing towards it on full blast for a couple of hours. It stops flies getting in and the fan sucks the warm air out of the room. It does wonders for us! I also have knee length socks filled with rice I keep in the freezer to drape over my neck and chest when I go to bed.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 02/07/2025 00:06

My feet are covered in bites and i don't know whether to blame the cat for fleas, or if it's mozzies, but it's miserable. When I last moved house i gave my fan away and now i wish i hadn't. Can't sleep with the windows open because I get hayfever and the pollen would get in.

NeverendingRabbitHole · 02/07/2025 00:06

It's raining now across the South East OP.

Bliss.

Terrribletwos · 01/07/2025 23:04

Yeah but we keep being told climate change is affecting everywhere with more heat so we are getting misinformation?

No, we are not. Take your conspiracy theories somewhere else.

ZaZathecat · 02/07/2025 00:19

I feel your pain, but one problem can be easily sorted. I have these magnetic fly screens on my garden doors and similar things for windows. I can leave everything open all evening and not be bothered by insects. (Not that any air was coming in at all tonight!)

Kimwestonhelpless · 02/07/2025 00:41

It must be horrendous,I'd be like most of you I wouldn't cope in that heat.
I'm bad enough with the heat in Ne Scotland.
Sympathies to you all that are struggling hopefully a cool spell is on it's way.

dottiedodah · 02/07/2025 00:56

Up again tonight! Bedroom temp 27c on my phone. How can anyone sleep in that? Poor dog is so hot .Went for a walk in the woods ,nice and cool.Stifling yesterday,No shade at all on beach .came home wringing wet.Straight in cool bath .Thunder tomorrow here thank goodness .South Coast

AllTheChaos · 02/07/2025 01:02

It’s horrible in London tonight - I realise now why hell is traditionally pictured as hot rather than cold! Can’t sleep, fans are just blowing warm air around, am shattered after several nights of this. DD was in tears earlier as she was so tired but couldn’t sleep. I’ve draped her with wet muslin and given her a hot water bottle full of cold water. Wish I had one for me! I just can’t function at these temperatures and the heatwave still hasn’t broken here yet, damnit!

I have MS and this heat is really doing a number on me 😞

I'm not complaining when everyone is so happy to be in the sun, makes me feel like I'm being really selfish 🙁

I have MS and complain about the sun constantly you're fine!!! 😉

RedBullBlood · 02/07/2025 04:41

Old school rubber hot water bottles half to three quarters filled with water then frozen are great under pillows.

BCBird · 02/07/2025 05:38

Try teaching a class of 30.in the heat. No air conditioning. Pupils constantly asking to fill up water bottles and bring expected to wear normal uniform. Some still coming in padded coats🤣

chatgptsbestmate · 02/07/2025 05:47

When people say "keep blinds and curtains drawn in the day" I do that , but my upstairs rooms STILL reach 31 C. I'm assuming with the curtains open, it would be even hotter 😬

Mumofyellows · 02/07/2025 06:26

Feeling very fortunate to be working in one of the only parts of my school with air con, it has been an absolutely lovely during the heat, very cool. Needed when teaching a class with complex needs.
Swam in the sea for a good 20 mins each day after work to cool right off from the commute home and then a cold shower right before bed.
Padding pool in the garden for the dogs and swims for them too as much as possible!

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 02/07/2025 06:34

Yup, terrible. V happy to wake up to rain today.

I opened doors/windows early and then shut them when we got to 8am or so / sun came in,

had cool showers

draped wet clothes over fans

froze and then put out ice blocks in kids’ rooms (google it, it works)

did nothing but water pistol fights, paddling pool, ice cream and bath play with the kids

It wasn’t fun but we managed. Another week or so would’ve severely tested me.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 02/07/2025 06:36

I love hot weather, always have. What we need though is air con, it would make our houses more bearable. However our houses are built to keep warm air in.

Saying that it said my flat was 31c at one point yesterday. There was also very little breeze so having windows and doors open did next to nothing.

Hate the flys that come out with the hot weather. Cat food especially attracts them.

BananaCaramel · 02/07/2025 06:36

The flowers have turned to dust

are you not watering them OP? My plants are all doing really well. My grass is yellow and crispy as you say…except near the flower beds 🤣

Anyway it’s meant to be cooler today although I will admit it doesn’t feel it yet!

Empress13 · 02/07/2025 06:38

You’re lucky you have air con at work I have a desk fan that blows out warm air. Yes I feel your pain and for all those saying aren’t we lucky having a glorious hot summer no it’s worrying lord only knows what temperatures will be like in years to come with climate change

BlueJuniper94 · 02/07/2025 06:43

Iloveanicegarden · 01/07/2025 22:40

We are in the south west and today was warm/hot but it was also cloudy so that made it bearable. I have some gel filled pads which feel cold when pressed against your skin. They are brilliant. When they cease to feel cold you just leave then a couple of hours to 'regenerate'

Can they go in the fridge or freezer?

RampantIvy · 02/07/2025 06:45

Move to Yorkshire. 21 degrees and cloudy yesterday.
Cold and wet this morning. However, we really, really need this rain so I'm not complaining.

Squirrelsnut · 02/07/2025 06:48

When desperate, I soak an old cotton maxi dress in cold water, wring it out and put it on. The initial aarrrggghhh! is worth it for the relief as it pulls the heat out of your skin all over. Even better if you have a fan on you. Also soak your hair in cold water and leave it dripping wet. Works well.

Zezet · 02/07/2025 06:49

Terrribletwos · 01/07/2025 23:04

Yeah but we keep being told climate change is affecting everywhere with more heat so we are getting misinformation?

Who is telling you that?
Because all I am getting is "higher likelihood of extreme weather events", "less predictability in events", "huge variety".
We haven't even called it global warming anymore for the past what, eight years? (I am just guessing.)

digiwidgy · 02/07/2025 06:52

BashfulClam · 01/07/2025 22:18

Move to Scotland, it’s about 14c right now where I live.

12 on my car when I drove home from work last night. I put the heating on for half an hour. Bonkers how temps vary across the country.
