To think this is unfair?

I joined a gym a few months ago and one of the main points for me was that it’s female only from 9-7 weekdays. I’ve just had this email from them and I’ll be cancelling as it no longer fits in with the times I can go, but this is ridiculous, right??

that's very very weird. so anyone that works basically cant go now. also why are children going to the gym? presumably if they are 12-16 year old they would be with a parent? who would be older than 24..therefore can't go

Polly7122 · 02/07/2025 17:16

woman are woman,no age limit should be in place. Shocking! Hope they lose lots of business

Honestly sounds pervy..
Like the man running it or the staff only want to look at young girls

I'm wondering if it's more one or more 25-59+ (and likely nearer the 59) year old males who want to join and attend according to their gender recognition certificate (or identity) as women and just happen to want to come into the gym when it's most likely that you'll get the youngest female gym goers.

'Oh, no, no women over 24 are allowed in the gym at that time, sorry, hope you find another gym'. Meaning they don't then get dragged into somebody choosing them to make a point or to get themselves around the younger female gym goers. They are being very specific about male and female in the wording, after all - maybe the 'I'm a woman, so my gender is female' argument has already been deployed.

Whatever the truth is though, it's time to find another gym.

Yes, I understand that but I’m paying the same amount as someone who is 18 but can now use the gym for an extra 15 hours a week compared to me? Because they happen to be younger?

That looks like age discrimination to me OP. I'd challenge it with the gym owners tbh.

GiveDogBone · 02/07/2025 18:14

Ridiculous, I stat membership cancellation. Would also try and encourage as many other people to do the same so they suffer and hopefully reverse course or close down.

Thistlewoman · 02/07/2025 18:16

Matronic6 · 01/07/2025 21:00

Well yeah but it's a terrible business decision. They are basically excluding a huge chunk of their customers from peak hours. I'd be surprised if they don't get a lot of negative feedback about it.

It's a bit more than a bad business decision tbh. It looks like illegal age discrimination tbh.

Thistlewoman · 02/07/2025 18:19

Didimum · 01/07/2025 20:17

A business is a business, OP.

Except THAT looks like illegal age discrimination. If it is as it appears in that email-then the gym would be well advised to do a U-turn as fast as you can say 'Keir Starmer'....

Ihopeyouhavent · 02/07/2025 18:20

Ywh, id be cancelling as well.

Hope you didn’t hurt your back with that epic reach 😂

You’d have to know their reasons first and then how proportionate it is. No one can make a judgement on its legality without knowing that. As others have pointed out, a gym that admits 12yr olds is not a standard gym. If it’s a specialised gym or runs particular programs, then that matters.

tiredofitall99 · 02/07/2025 19:08

Instagram hour lol they don't want the oldies ruining the footage 🤣

aredcar · 01/07/2025 20:25

That’s ridiculous they’re surely going to lose lots of business. Imagine you’ve just turned 25 and youre too old now for the gym - how stupid

Except it isn't like that at all. The restriction is for three hours of the day, nothing to stop 25+ yr old women going to the gym at other times of the day.

The irony of being happy to discriminate against men yet throw a tantrum when a second less restrictive discrimination affects you.🙄

schtompy · 02/07/2025 19:54

Pandering to the entitled youngsters who have not learnt the world doesnt revolve around them. Dear god. Yes leave the gym, tell them succinctly why.
I’m sure there will be a better gym out there for you.

Between 9-4 when the majority will be at work…?

Actually they are stopped from going to the gym at oher times of the day. The gym is exclusively for men from 7-10 so they can't go those hours and I am fairly certain that the huge majority of women may have work between 9-4 each day. So it is is in fact VERY restrictive for women over 24.

I don't understand why people embarrass themselves by making sarky comments when they don't even bother to read all of OP's posts.

daleylama · 02/07/2025 20:30

RavenLaw · 01/07/2025 20:25

Not ridiculous at all - teenage girls collectively are a group highly at risk of stopping exercising. There's a purpose in providing a space just for them, just as there is a purpose in women only gym sessions in the first place. If the gym managers think there's a workable business case for making it work good luck to them. If it doesn't then they'll go bust.

Agreed. Maybe they have an issue with equipment availability and are rationalising this as those hours being best suited to that age range. Certainly seems like a recipe for losing custom.

LoopyLoo1991 · 02/07/2025 20:39

Farmwifefarmlife · 01/07/2025 20:19

That’s absolutely ridiculous! Why women of a certain age!? I’d feel furious OP.

Dance or ballet groups? Happened at that place in West London when the council closed a community hall, so it was an alternative until dance classes and training could find a permanent home. I'll ask a mate as her daughter attends a dance school in that bourgh.

I’d be mentioning that in your cancellation email. 4-7pm is peak times for gym members. What a silly policy!

Mumof2amazingasdkiddos · 02/07/2025 20:48

@Whenlifegivesyouoranges am I understanding correctly that if you are a woman aged 25 and over who works a 9 to 5 job then you now simply can't use your membership during the working week? That doesn't sound right or fair to me

That seems to sum it up and at no reduction in membership fee. 🤪

Mumof2amazingasdkiddos · 02/07/2025 21:05

@grumpygrape how the hell do they expect to run a business like that! Madness and I hope they get enough "feedback" to realise it's ridiculous

Laura95167 · 02/07/2025 21:21

You could argue this is an ageist policy.

Also I wouldnt want a 12 year old using gym equipment unsupervised by an appropriate adult

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/07/2025 21:23

Mumble12 · 02/07/2025 18:40

I think it's less of a reach than 'young women are so traumatised by seeing the bodies of females older than 24 in their space and in the background of their reels that we've decided to ban them from coming - they should be at home cooking after school in any case, but we'll graciously let them in when the kids are at school when nobody else is here' or 'The owner wants to perve on 12 year olds without any mothers watching'.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 02/07/2025 21:28

I was assuming they would be letting men in! Cant see any reason to restrict on the basis of age - and to do it just after normal business hours is weird.
