Taking 5 year old photo for passport?

Childcare18 · 01/07/2025 19:01

Hello , this may be a silly question, but how do I get a passport photo for my 5 year old son? He needs his passport renewing. I tired to take him to a photo booth today but his head was too low down and not big enough for the circle in the screen. Am I allowed to photograph him at home like we did when he was a baby? Or is there a hack that I don't know about with getting children's photos in photo booths? Any advice with be appreciated ☺️

I took DD, who was 4, to a branch Max Spielman and they took them for me. Wasn’t expensive and she kept perfectly still, a total contrast to when I tried at home!

If your in UK, Timsons are fab

We have a photo shop on our town that do passport photos. They did it quick and we had digital copies so we could upload onto the online passport form.

Bobbybobbins · 01/07/2025 19:03

We took ours to a Max Spielman shop to do it as were struggling at home.

White or cream wall in your house or drape a white sheet over a door. Take picture with phone asking him not to smile. Make sure there're no shadows on his face.

You can do the phone photo as part of the online application. Have the email address of the person who will be verifying his identity.

Our local Timspons take passport photos, they have a screen and they sit them on a stool and take multiple photos until they get one that works! Very easy!

There are websites you can upload your own photo to.

Am805463 · 01/07/2025 19:04

I’ve always taken everyone’s at home with my phone. You just upload it on the application.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 01/07/2025 19:05

I've always used Timpsons.

Take a photo on your phone and upload it to here: https://www.idphoto4you.com/

That'll make you a single standard photo with a 6 passport sized ones on it. Take it to Boots on a USB stick and print it for a couple of quid.

You can use the photo on your phone without needing to print it if doing an online application (which is cheaper anyway)

We did ours at home on phone with white background...tablet on to keep head still. It was fine!

simsbustinoutmimi · 01/07/2025 19:08

Usually the chair can be moved upwards mechanically. I had to do that for me.

BogRollBOGOF · 01/07/2025 19:08

My local pharmacy does it.
They even have a white cushion for young babies.

This is really difficult to take correctly and mine ended up getting declined around 6 times when I uploaded it. A lot easier to get a photo done in a booth or by a proper photographer.

tarheelbaby · 01/07/2025 19:38

In the nicest way, I'd say give the home photo a little more wellie and follow the suggestions above. It is much easier to take a home photo for a UK passport than some others. It's good practice for when you need to upload a photo for his provisional license ...

eurochick · 01/07/2025 21:20

I do ours at home. You might need to play around a bit with lighting but it’s not difficult. You don’t need any special app, just the camera on your phone.

Can smile under six years old

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 01/07/2025 21:23

Me and dh did our last ones at home.

Zanatdy · 01/07/2025 21:23

Yes you can take one at home against a white background. It accepted the first one I did of my daughter.

RightSaidFrederica · 01/07/2025 22:23

Super easy to do at home. White background and no shadows, and you’re all good.

Childcare18 · 02/07/2025 08:34

Thanks for everyone's replies! 😊

Chiming in to add that if you have a photo resembling a passport one, you can use a photo cropping tool to just resize it. If not, take the picture yourself as suggested above!

GRex · 09/07/2025 05:16

Try again. Also if you think it looks ok but it gets rejected by the online checker, send it anyway. We had it rejected for head tilt, but accepted when a human saw it. Little ones aren't expected to stand perfectly.
