Helicopters can piss off

Nursingadvice · 01/07/2025 07:05

I know I’m being unreasonable as they obviously have an important job to do. But why must helicopters circle repeatedly for what feel like hours. Currently 7am and it’s been at least an hour. The sound enrages me. Not bothered by traffic, motorbikes, sirens. But helicopters 😡
Also loud people, particularly drunk ones late at night, but that’s a thread for another day.

What sounds annoy other people? I need a distraction before I start shouting up at the sky like a crazy woman.

As you will know it's mostly emergency services you could have got got out of bed and thought I won't be a dick.

Nevermind you can try again tomorrow

The absolute irony in this post

ItDoesntHaveToBeASnowman · 01/07/2025 08:09

Are people worried the helicopters are going to take offence and stop doing their jobs or something?

Westfacing · 01/07/2025 08:12

Helicopters during the day are often just a mode of private transport and that annoys me as the sound is so intrusive - I pass the heliport on one of my Thames Path walks and you can't hear yourself think if one is landing/taking off.

However during the night if I hear one clattering overhead no matter how long, absolutely does not bother me at all, as I know it's the police doing their job!

Noodge · 01/07/2025 08:13

The force i used to work in had one helicopter (and it was a huge force by uk standards) and only two people in the whole force licensed to operate it.
They also cost a fortune. They don't send them out willly-nilly. Usually a high risk missing person or high risk BOLO.

The noise doesnt annoy me although I do understand it might bother some, but it isnt making that noise for sh1ts and giggles.

saltnvinegarhulahoops · 01/07/2025 08:21

I lived in an area where there were riots a few years ago and the helicopters were relentless. Day and night. I understand the majority are essential but good lord, they are horrifically noisy.

You know you're being unreasonable, but you thought you'd post in AIBU anyway. OK then.

Great contribution to the thread. She’s just having a chit chat ffs.

OP we live on the waterfront so we get helicopters often, for obvious reasons. Necessary, yes, but still an annoying noise. Sometimes it sounds like it’s inside the house.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 01/07/2025 08:22

Quad bikes and motorbikes. Even more so the ones my neighbours’ kids drive around behind my house while screaming their fucking heads off. Their thinking seems to have been along the lines of: hmmmm this is a nice field that people have always kept their horses on, let’s strong-arm the farmer into selling it so we can let it turn to shit then use it to fly round on quad bikes and chase them with motorbikes.

And don’t get me started on how angry hearing the sound of heavy machinery being revved over and over makes me. Same neighbours and last night it started at midnight. Cunts.

Dance music. Surprise surprise it’s the neighbours again. We moved to get away from dance music being pounded through our walls until between 3am and 5am (she’d turn it off just before I left for work at 5:20am) so I was already sensitive to the sheer hatred I have for that genre. Then the new neighbour decided we all need to listen to it at all times. Beautiful summers day? Much improved by dance music at a ridiculous level surely. Every weekend throughout the year - yeah chuck some dance music on full blast 🤬🤬🤬
At least the previous neighbour’s wank dance music had words in it.

While I’m typing this they’re screaming and shouting outside my window and wheel spinning on the gravel. Fuckers.
They moved here for the ‘country life’ 😂😂😂😂

We do get a lot of helicopters as we’re close to a couple of large cities, but they don’t particularly bother me.

Theunamedcat · 01/07/2025 08:25

The noise is annoying I agree especially when they are hovering over one spot your sat there thinking I need to go out soon but should I? Because they are obviously there for a reason what if someone dangerous is out there 🤔 🙃

I'm irrational about one of my neighbours dogs barking it's a whingy crunchy barking that goes on ALL DAY LONG it's not the dogs fault they are backyard breeders and they keep her penned in all year (yes its been reported loads no one cares) but it just goes on and on and ON all day most the night I know I'm being unreasonable to get irritated by it it's not her fault her life is so shite but the BARKING all day long it's like nails on chalkboard (if anyone knows the right phrases to say to the RSPCA to get them to actually DO something feel free to let me know so far penned in the garden all year and being bred all year means nothing to them)

KPPlumbing · 01/07/2025 08:30

Where I live it's either Search & Rescue or the military. I think we want both, don't we, and certainly want them well trained.

mariasanp · 01/07/2025 08:33

Don’t mind helicopters, cant stand people that do that backfire shit with their cars and revving etc.

Dangermoo · 01/07/2025 07:33

Where do you live, where a police helicopter is a regular sound!

London

We have a whole range here:

Military flights;
Diplomatic / ceremonial flights (including Trump on Marine One, which we saw from our back garden!);
Coastguard;
Air Ambulance;
Police;
Sightseeing flights;
Training flights for all of the above.

We also get the bonus of historic fly pasts (eg Spitfires, B52) and/or the Red Arrows most years.

We’re just used to it I suppose. I find barking dogs more annoying.

Oh yes barking dogs too

OP posts:
flapjackfairy · 01/07/2025 08:36

sorry to break ranks but I live near a major trauma centre and regularly get helicopters flying over and see them landing and taking off. I really like watching them. I think you do get used to the noise. In fact just realised I can hear one now but hadn't even realised until saw this thread. Would White noise help to cancel it out a bit ?

Yes because bro g annoyed by a helicopter circling above me for an hour waking me up.l, definitely means I have zero respect or appreciation for emergency services 🙄

OP posts:
HeartandSeoul · 01/07/2025 08:40

I don’t mind emergency service helicopters nearby, as I understand they are doing an important job. However, every year I get irritated the day after Glastonbury finishes, as private helicopters are busy ferrying people back to London. We seem to be on the flight path. It’s all you hear all day (ok, slight exaggeration!), especially when windows are open due to the heat.

Loveduppenguin · 01/07/2025 08:42

partyboat356 · 01/07/2025 07:58

I'm sorry but that's ridiculous. People are still allowed to get annoyed by the noise and talk about it.

Not when someone’s life is at risk!…how insensitive. When I hear one circling in my area it usually coastguard as I’m coastal. I will stop to thing of the person in need and send a prayer, it doesn’t hurt to change perspective. It’s very sad that people will actually find a way to moan about this…

Pinty · 01/07/2025 08:43

Helicopters circle when there has been an emergency, an accident or when they are searching for someone.
So yes sorry you are being unreasonable
Loud music, dogs barking loud fireworks and people being generally selfish annoy me but not circling helicopters

This! I blame those daft Fast & Furious films but shittily modified crappy cars, the seat so low the driver's arse must be grazing the tarmac, with fart-can exhausts popping and banging while doing donuts/burnouts, are the plague of summer around here.

I don't mind helicopters at all although Ascot last week meant an excess of rich folk buzzing back and forth in them like every year. 😁

FasterthanBolt · 01/07/2025 07:06

Where I live the helicopters are either the air ambulance or the coastguard and the local FB group is full of people moaning about the noise 🙄

This. It's an incredibly expensive to run device that's usually only brought out in a search and rescue or medical emergency. To save a life. Yabu.

dottiedodah · 01/07/2025 09:04

We live near the South Coast ,in this weather they are circling to check coast is clear of any problems. Also hear police helicopters as well some nights .Add to that our neighbours dog,car doors slamming. and someones ruddy hedge being cut! (On wait that last one was us!) Noise is inevitable, but yes its annoying seems louder in hot weather somehow!

BeanQuisine · 01/07/2025 09:10

Sympathies re the noise.

But where I live we very rarely see or hear helicopters. A nice yellow one passed over the other day and I actually ran out of the house to get a good look at it. 😄

Nursingadvice · 01/07/2025 09:23

I had no idea so many people had helicopter noise, but hadn’t considered all the different reasons. I assumed it was rare outside of cities.
