For disconnecting the water pump and leaving neighbours with no water a few hours

I Will try and explain and much as I can without it being to long . I live in a rented large home rurally , our water is private ( we pay for it ) . The water supply is low this year , a farm has been using too much and with the current water it got low ) .
I should add at this stage that when we moved in we specifically asked if water was a issue and where told no . 2 weeks ago the water stopped , we where informed there was a additional borehole in our home so connected to our electricity on our meter and they came and connected it , we found out after it is actually feeding a farm and 6 houses ( possibly 7 ) . I’ve contacted by writhing and phone on 2 occasions asking them how they intend to pay for the extra electricity , the pump works every time someone flushes or has a bath or their washing machine works etc and the farm will be using it a lot more . No reply .
To make it worse yesterday evening the water almost stopped , I’m assuming as I see the farmers up and down they are using all the water on the farm and fields . Meaning me and hubby get in after a day of work with 3 kids and can’t even shower .
Im pissed off as you can imagine . The water was back most of the day today but now gone again .
Since nobody has paid me and its my meter AIBU for turning the pump around 4 pm so at lest hubby can have a shower after working in a physical job all day and I can do the bloody washing , I don’t mind having a shower in the morning as my job is a desk one ?
I’m thinking on leaving it on 9 to 4 maybe and an hour when hubby gets home at 9 pm ? That way the water replenishes enough everyone can use it .

Who are you contacting in writing and by phone?

Which country are you in?

No. Maybe if the water companies got their act together to fix the leaks that have been going on for a long time, I might.

Twelftytwo · 14/07/2025 11:11

The sounds like a really strange set up.
And not sustainable. How will you ever sell your property with this set up?

I think do what you like with your pump on your property, that you're paying for.

If the others are inconvenienced too then maybe something will get sorted.

Twelftytwo · 14/07/2025 11:12

Sorry just seen it is rented, so that's one good thing in a way.

I think you need to have an arrangement of everyone chipping in your bills or just switch it off.

myplace · 14/07/2025 11:14

Keep it switched off. Turn it on when you need it. That will preserve your supply, that you alone pay to access.

CanOfMangoTango · 14/07/2025 11:14

Just switch it off totally unless you need it on.

Cheeky gets!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/07/2025 11:17

Sounds absolutely bizarre to me. Speak to the landlord. Remind them that you were told there was an issue and re the payment issue.

You may have a case against them
re the payment if not against the neighbours/ farm.

At least you can choose to move out as it is rented.

What the absolute fuck does that have to do with the point of the thread that OP posted 15 days ago??

This for sure. Who on earth let the neighbours do this? Your landlord?

ExpertArchFormat · 14/07/2025 11:21

If you are paying for the electricity it is completely correct that you should switch off the pump whenever your personal household doesn't need water. Turn it on only when you need it.

The other properties that need water need to pay to have their own pumps installed or a local community association could be formed to let everyone subscribe to the pump but that's only acceptable if there's a legitimate way to cut off water access to any property that doesn't pay their contribution.

BernardButlersBra · 14/07/2025 11:28

I would be turning it off long term! They know these things aren't free, they need to pay their share and not be greedy with the water
