Garden tap costing hundreds any suggestions on how to water plants?

cupcakessl · 30/06/2025 18:45

I have just been quoted £1000 for an outside tap at the front of my house.
I have a tap in the back garden but it’s not possible to take it round the back due to the long alleyway.

The plumber said I would have to have a pipe going from my downstairs toilet to the front and it would be a days work.

I don’t want to pay a grand just so I can water my plants.

I did take the hose through the house but it just leaked everywhere and made it very messy.

Any suggestions please?

I use a watering can but I am always going back and forth multiple times.

Hi
I had a Hozelock hose but it was leaking at the connection and resulted in water all over my kitchen floor.

There is another two houses by the alley so it’s not possible as I would be on my neighbours drive who have two cars.

I will probably get some more quotes.
The lady said they charge £90 an hour but I wanted an exact price so then the owner said it would a grand.

On the leaking connections - this is so common because the washers get brittle from the cold if they're left outside over winter. In case anyone reading this with leaky connectors - you can buy a brand new set for about £7. No more leaky connectors!

I got a flexi hose with brass connectors. The advice is to put it in the shed for winter to protect from frost.

cupcakessl · 30/06/2025 22:41

The hozelock was brought about 2 weeks ago and was leaking the first time I used it.
Not sure what I am doing wrong?

It's not snapped on tight enough, it shouldn't leak. If you've tried everything, get a 'no job too small' handy person round for a look.

The company don't want the job. That's a "fuck off please" quote.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 30/06/2025 22:47

I recently got a Waterbutt but wish I’d gone for the bigger one as fills easily. I too was sick of paying for water. It should last 10 days or so even in this weather!!!

AdoraBell · 30/06/2025 22:51

Could you get an extension hose pipe, we have a connection, I think it’s Hoze Lock brand, connects 2 hoses.

LostMySocks · 30/06/2025 22:51

At my first house my outside tap was unhelpfully in the front garden. I bought a long hose and some house clips and fixed a hose along the side of the building and into an extendable wall mounted hose pipe thing. I still had to nip round the front to switch on the tap but could then water the back garden.
It took a couple of hours to fix all the wall clips but made life easier than using a watering can all the time.

Whoever quoted you for fitting the garden tap really doesn't want the job. Find a local handy man, depending where you live, this should cost 150 to 200 pounds.

RosyDaysAhead · 01/07/2025 18:32

Get a water burr at the front and use that to collect rainwater for the plants. Much quicker

vickylou78 · 01/07/2025 19:13

Connect a water butt to your front guttering down pipe.

Or have a clean hose that you use specifically for going from kitchen tap to front of house. But this would be tricky to not get water everywhere!!

I'd go with water butt idea personally!

She has no water at the front of the house... They have to run pipework all through the house - would you do that for £150?

Jumpers4goalposts · 01/07/2025 19:37

They don’t want the job get another quote.

LouiseK93 · 01/07/2025 19:40

Attach your pipe to a neighbours tap 😈

soupyspoon · 01/07/2025 19:42

Hose

O's

Surely? We have 100 ft one and I walk down our utility room (side return) on the side of the house. We have a small house but you could get much longer hoses than that.

hororumandbrandy · 01/07/2025 19:43

A really really long hosepipe from the tap in the back garden?

Did you say you had an outside tap at the back? Why are you connecting the hose to your kitchen, just run it from the back to the front down the alley?

I may have misunderstood this.

Lilywc · 01/07/2025 20:13

Sounds like he’s taking the piss & really can’t be bothered with the job,
keep asking around or go to nearest hardware store & ask their advice x

£1000?!

Are they piping the water in from a stream on Everest? 😂

😂😃
How about just a tap outside without running a pipe, just using a hose as a flexible pipe?

BooneyBeautiful · 01/07/2025 21:04

cupcakessl · 30/06/2025 18:54

The toilet is at the back next to the kitchen.
I was expecting a couple of hundred quit not a grand.

I will look into buying a water butt.

Sometimes the local water provider offers free water butts as an incentive to save water, so definitely give them a call first.

Doggymummar · 01/07/2025 21:07

We got a new hose this year in a trolley it 140 ft I think and reaches from the back garden, down the alley and to the front.

IwasDueANameChange · 01/07/2025 21:10

I wish they would start designing homes to have pipework with the option to drain your bath water down to your lawn!

NeedToKnow101 · 01/07/2025 21:36

Think of the watering can trips as exercise.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 01/07/2025 21:39

You could also get a butt and connect to an automatic irrigation system. I have one of these and again wish I’d got a bigger system but does my veg plot.

BobbleHatsRule · 01/07/2025 21:49

I have 8 water butt's tucked around the garden collecting off shed, greenhouse, drainpipes and linked to each other in 2 cases. This gives me water to survive dry patches and they are close to where I need them. I usually empty them despite that many. I might use the hose once a year. I rarely water established plants and trees. It's tubs and raised beds so I'd advise against having those.

I've collected butts free from marketplace and the water board was giving them away at one point
