To wonder how people rave about Birkenstocks?

I tried a pair on a few weeks ago and they felt like concrete blocks on the ends of my legs- everyone raves about them, I don’t get it?

They need to be worn in, like an hour a day for a week building up, I’ve got one pair on the way out and a second pair I’m wearing in before they go. Over time they mould to your feet and become the most comfortable shoes ever.

Maybe they don't suit your feet? Maybe you need to do some leg presses? Do you have underdeveloped calf muscles?

Cakeandusername · 29/06/2025 23:27

They bed in to your feet. I like the style with a toe post - gizeh?

Shinyandnew1 · 29/06/2025 23:28

They are honestly the most comfortable sandals I have ever worn. I put them on first thing and would rather wear them than be barefooted.

People are different...

NapoleonsToe · 29/06/2025 23:29

I'm with you OP, so uncomfortable.

Granny shoes

They are so far from being shoes an elderly woman would traditionally wear!

Yes when I first got some I thought I’d made a terrible mistake.

Just bought my second and have been trying to break them in by taking dog for walk round the block etc in them. Can’t remember how long it took to break them in.

Old ones fantastically comfortable but falling apart.

That’s not the insult you think it is.

I love my birks. You do have to wear them in, which doesn’t even take that long tbh. Worth sticking with.

CoastalCalm · 29/06/2025 23:32

I switch from Birkenstocks (couple of pairs) to crocs in winter and miss them til they come out again - wish I’d bought some years ago

I live in my Birk sandals in summer and wear Birk boots in winter. Oh and the slippers at home.
Too old to be suffering with sore feet..

OneCraftyCritic · 29/06/2025 23:37

I'm really curious if your feet end up smelling after wearing them barefoot for a while. Just looking at those soles makes me feel like they'll trap sweat and oils.

SemperIdem · 29/06/2025 23:38

I think they’re tricky if you have wide feet.

I have quite narrow feet, can just wear them straight out of the box, no need to break them in for comfort etc.

It seems I’m quite a clumsy person and would stub my toes on every solid surface possible so I’m glad Birkenstocks exist, they protect my toes!

Doingtheboxerbeat · 29/06/2025 23:38

I agree OP, something that uncomely to look at would have to be immediately comfortable to justify my wearing them.
They are a certain aesthetic , that just isn't my to my taste , so I wouldn't be trying to mould my feet into these.

Mine don’t, but I don’t tend towards having sweaty feet.

My husband on the other hand…

Holditcowboy · 29/06/2025 23:41

The quality is terrible now, they are no better than the versions you get in middle lidl or wherever . My recent pair lasted five weeks before the sole crumbled and deteriorated to nothing. Birkenstock only guarantee products bought directly from Birkenstock, which makes me wonder whether they just allow other companies to manufacture inferior versions and use the name. In any case I still have pairs that are decades old and still fine. The new ones are definitely not worth the price.

IPM · 29/06/2025 23:43

I don't know what people see in them really.

They're only marginally less ugly than crocs.

ChaToilLeam · 29/06/2025 23:45

I love them! I like the ones with the single strap across the foot. Simple and comfortable and classic - and they fit my short wide feet well.

I have the boots too. 💛💛💛💛💛

I needed to hear this! I collected my first pair today having ordered them online. Tried them on in store after collection and was a little disappointed with how solid they felt. I brought them home anyway to try again a d make my mind up. I take on board your comments and will keep them (and wear them around the house every day for the foreseeable!) Thank you 🤩

OntheBorder1 · 29/06/2025 23:50

I agree OP. I've tried twice, and while they felt comfortable at first once I had been for a few long walks in them out they went (and yes, I did wear them in). The work of the Devil!

TheLarkAscendingRose · 29/06/2025 23:51

I find them comfortable right away. It must depend on your feet. I like arch support and they last years
