Is anyone else skinny-fat?

I am a size 14, weigh about 11.5 stone at 5’6/7. I don’t think walking down the street anyone would look at me and think I look noticeably ‘fat’ but I also know that I am technically overweight and I am carrying excess fat around my belly and thighs. Compared to my size 8 friends I feel huge, compared to my size 20 friends I feel smaller.

I think there’s a whole group of people like me who are overweight but at the lower end. I think of myself as a skinny fat person if that makes sense.

I am finding it hard to lose weight, mostly because I’m not very good at tracking calories and I do have a few vices (mostly wine, chocolate and carbs) that I struggle to give up. I know people who have been very overweight who have managed to drop a lot of weight very quickly but it doesn’t happen like that for me even when I try.

Im not desperately unhappy with my appearance but I think if I could lose between 1-2 stone I’d feel a lot better. Health wise I am more worried as I’m 40 soon and know I need to look after myself better. It’s almost harder when you don’t have as much to lose, or is it just me?

Right I think we have established that OP has misused the term skinny fat, she has acknowledged this herself multiple times.

She's a little overweight. However our rapidly swelling population makes her look slim by comparison.

OP I'm sure you look great. But you'll be healthier if you lose a stone. A combination of a calorie restriction, protein increase, alcohol reduction and three fitness classes a week should sort you out.

At least the OP now knows what skinny fat means. Sorry OP 😂

sorry but with this weight/height combination you are overweight (even though just a bit). It's definitely not skinny. Comparing yourself to your obese size 20 friends isn't probably helpful.

Thank you I really couldn’t be bothered to say it again 😂

I agree and from this week I am thinking a lot more carefully about my calories. I can get weight off. I’ve done it before and I can do it again if I just put my mind to it.

To be clear, I am a similar ratio to @labamba23. I can keep the weight just in the normal category with rigorous discipline. I mentioned weight to my rheumatologist and her spin was very much "actually at your age, 65, and with osteoporosis, you are far better off a little overweight than underweight". She then went on to say the BMI data was out of date and not particularly helpful as it was overall fitness and wellness that mattered most.

I've always been (too) skinny...no change for 20 odd years. Then I hit 40 and put on a stone in a year without doing anything different.

I'm still slim. But if things continue as they are and I'm another stone heavier in a year's time I will be a completely normal weight....and probably look better for it...but really I'll probably be unhealthy given it's 2 stone over my natural weight. I just think it highlights that different people have very different natural frames.

Did that comment make you feel good?

I am just telling the truth. I am not skinny fat. I am fat fat.

Wait, did you think I was talking about you? I have never seen you before in my life so how could I possibly comment on what you look like?
