Nadiya Hussain responds to critics

I can understand her being upset that her shows have been axed, apparently ratings were falling, However, I find it hugely disappointing that she has brought race/religion into it. No one is entitled to a BBC show and I think she has had a bloody good run. AIBU?

It's not exactly "losing a job" though. She would have a contract to produce X number of series and that has now ended, something she knew would happen with no guarantee of renewal. She/her agent should have been looking for her next opportunity - and maybe they have been and all this is just to get some publicity

Maybe this is part of a strategy to shift over to a role hosting a hardhitting talk show?

You clearly read none of the comments, didn't read the article or watch the video. Because that is not what was said. And if she is a failure, then I want to be a failure too. But why let facts get in the way of a racist rant?

The amount of posters who’ve very obviously not watched the video and listened to her saying why she was saying what she did is staggering.

Sunholidays · 29/06/2025 14:03

She should stop whining, no one is owed a BBC show. Get a job, Nadiya ❤

justasking111 · 29/06/2025 14:04

The chefs that endure, travel the world learning about different cuisines. Weekends in Europe working with locals and cooks/chefs in homes and restaurants . It's them observing, learning along with us that I enjoy.

She is a Human being with feelings she is allowed to be irritated/angry/emotional she doesn't have to be "nice".

I never said she did. Confused

She does have a job.

She’s just launched a range of cakes with Tesco and she published another cookery book not so long ago.

What is she moaning for then? Confused

Another example of being shot to fame for reasons other than her ability is Bryony from Bake Off. She has a very obvious disability (deformed/partial hand) and a knack for self promotion. She, much like NH, ticked a minority representation box at just the right time. If she'd had two hands (and especially as she didn't even win BO but came fourth) she'd probably still be doing whatever day job she did before she appeared on it, instead of getting steady work as a TV presenter who is merely adequate. When the work eventually slackens off on account of her being a fairly mediocre presenter I don't know what she'll blame it on, but it won't be on her malformed hand, which was the very thing that got her the gig in the first place.

You must have meant to @ someone else in, because I have no clue why you're responding to me like this.

Well if you had watched video you’d know. Not that she’s moaning.

And right now it’s you who’s looking like a numpty.

Well perhaps race WAS a factor given that people have been commenting that she should be grateful. They probably wouldn't use that word if Mary Berry or Holly Willoughby were fired. They'd say, 'they had a good run, they've got loads of experience and will go on to find something else that uses their presenting skills.'
So, while Nadiya should accept that brutal axes are a sad aspect of TV life, she's also got the right to point out that the gratitude word has difficult connotations for her.

Yes they would. Anyone who has made a great living out of TV work should be grateful. Mary Berry frequently says how grateful she is - she even stayed with BBC after Bake Off went to Ch 4 to show her gratitude to the channel.
Everyone is saying 'be grateful' as not everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame', and 'not everyone gets given such backing and publicity'.

Bringing race into it - when we know the BBC have been discriminating against, for example, white middle aged men - is petty and ungrateful. I guess the viewing public must all be racist for not wanting to watch a recipe made with banana skins or her sprinkling cheesy puffs into her dishes. Maybe she needs to take a long hard look at why her show isn't watched.

EasternStandard · 29/06/2025 14:10

pikkumyy77 · 29/06/2025 12:57

I don’t know anything about this case but women and POC get their shows and columns axed all the time because of misogyny or racism so there is no “of course” about it.

And also white men or Nepo babies, ir socially prominent/aristocratic people get carried through difficult or declining popularity all the time as well as they tend to have powerful family, friends, or backers who will support them at a loss for the company.

Some Murdoch productions have run at a loss for years as a loss leader or because of the importance of the propaganda goals to the whole enterprise. So even a head to head comparison between her ratings and a native born white person’s are not clearly relevant.

Pp are saying she’s had shows for ten years, books and Tesco deal. Why is that in line with this happens ‘all the time’?

This exactly. She needs to deal with it and get over herself, and be bloody grateful she had the chances she had.

Summersunshinebliss · 29/06/2025 14:17

Her video is giving that nurse from lockdown vibes. I feel for her as she's obviously hurt but working in the media is fickle if ratings are low then of course the show will be cancelled.

Golden407 · 29/06/2025 14:17

ItsUpToYou · 29/06/2025 13:32

This sums up the general attitude perfectly. “Little brown woman, you must stay in the box that we have so generously given to you.”

I don’t think so, she, like everybody in television isn’t entitled to a job for life. If the ratings for her show had remained high she wouldn’t have been cancelled.
I’m sure she still has plenty of opportunities she may be better concentrating on taking advantage of those whilst her profile remains high. Instead of whinging about how it’s all so unfair. That wild be true for anyone regardless of their background

I am assuming the comments were also about her culture a Muslim woman being "allowed" ? I don't know i am a white woman it is just how i read it.

Perhaps read them before making a comment.

cumbriaisbest · 29/06/2025 14:29

Look at Jeremy Clarkson No Thanks

Nadiya is such a likeable and skilled person but for me her in front of the camera was a little flat.

cumbriaisbest · 29/06/2025 14:33

@dietmonkey correct.

pinkdelight · 29/06/2025 14:33

TV is brutal. Every show gets axed sooner or later with very few exceptions. If she's popular enough to pull in the numbers, she'll get another show elsewhere.

Starbri8 · 29/06/2025 14:34

It is the same thing , by saying otherwise we are reducing people to race and not just people who can share an experience regardless of race or colour. Poor white people are often told to be grateful too! A lot of it is classism not racism . Nadia has had an exceptional good run and no doubt will have another show in the future.

cumbriaisbest · 29/06/2025 14:36

Do you remember that weird slidey cake thing she presented to Her Maj?

TwigletsAndRadishes · 29/06/2025 14:40

Coffeeishot · 29/06/2025 13:45

She is a Human being with feelings she is allowed to be irritated/angry/emotional she doesn't have to be "nice".

You are right of course, she can be as angry and outspoken as she likes on whatever topic she likes. But she should understand that there may be a heavy price to pay for that. To indulge that side of herself so publicly will almost certainly set her career back a few pegs and knock her popularity.

She's been emboldened by a fabulous career in TV that was constructed very suddenly, but like a house of cards it can be destroyed just as suddenly. She's going to need to stay likeable, relatable and anodyne unless she's prepared to risk it all. People want to be entertained by people who work in light entertainment not hectored by them or preached to by them. We want escapism and a distraction from a troubled world and our everyday worries. We get enough hectoring and preaching and lecturing from journalists and politicians.

Gary Lineker is finding out the same thing, except that Gary Lineker, much like JK Rowling can afford to put two fingers up at anyone who thinks they should just shut up and stick to their day job. It doesn't matter financially to either GL or JKR if they never work again. NH on the other hand, would be a fool to think she can afford the same luxury.
