Fell down the stairs hurt my foot, a & e or wait ?

So about an hour ago I was coming downstairs holding my 20 month old. I went to walk down the first step and slipped, luckily I had held off baby tightly so she didn’t get hurt or fall but I watched as my leg and foot went in all sorts of positions. I sat on the stairs for 10 minutes crying because I had sharp shooting pains in my foot. I managed to walk down to the sofa with my older children’s help but it hurts to put weight on it. It’s a little swollen but my older children helped and I had ice on it straight away. I can’t bend the last 2 of my toes, it hurts all around the top part of my foot and hurts to put weight on it, I can walk but I’m limping and like I said can’t bend my last 2 toes and when I put pressure I get shooting pains.

never had a fall like this before but I’m in a lot of pain. I called my husband who’s on his way home from work but my sister in law came and she’s told me to have a hot bath whilst she watches the kids and see if it helps.

any ideas? There is minimal swelling but I have a lot of pain in my actual foot and can’t bend the last 2 toes and hurts when I try

I’m at an and e now waiting to be seen. I waited overnight to see but I didn’t sleep last night due to pain. When I woke up this morning my entire foot and ankle is sore but more so at the front of my foot, it hurts when I put weight on it under neath the bottom of my foot and at the side and on the side at the top it is not bruised but slightly swollen and I can’t tell if it’s slightly bruised but it is slightly swollen, my whole foot is sore but the most pain is at the top of my foot under nearh in the middle and at the side.

im waiting to be seen but just feel like im wasting time, Dh said there is no obvious reason it could be broke or fractured ( even though I have a lot of pain I can walk it just hurts to put weight and it’s slightly swollen. My daughter at 2 had a hairline fracture and has no bruising or swelling and she just complained of pain, doctors didn’t even think it was a fracture but said they’d do an x ray just in case and it showed she had a hairline fracture so that’s what’s put it in my mind that it needs to be checked.

Is your DH a medical professional? You're not wasting time, you are sensibly seeking medical advice & treatment as you have hurt your foot. I hope it's not broken & I hope the wait isn't too long.

hope you ate back home now with your feet up and dh bringing you Brew

Minor injuries would be fine. If its not appropriate then triage appropriately. Get well soon OP x

I had a fall on the stairs, and it turned out I had actually broken my foot, but A & E after a few checks decided it wasn't, even though someone did look at the x-ray after I went home. I had it re-xrayed a month later and the GP saw it was a healed fracture. I hope you're sorted now.

outerspacepotato · 28/06/2025 18:03

Unless you're married to an XRay machine, your husband can't know whether it's broken or not. You do need to be seen and he shouldn't be dismissive of that.

My husband missed a step, his foot hurt a bit with mild bruising and it turned out to be broken.

Kleya25 · 28/06/2025 18:09

You've done the right thing in going to A and E, I fell three months ago and couldn't put weight on the ankle, first nurse thought I hadn't broken anything but sent me for X-ray anyway, good job he did, turned out to be a particular kind of unpleasant fracture. Had to wear a boot and still using strapping and a stick and having gradually build back strength and balance.

SENNeeds2 · 28/06/2025 18:09

I recently broke my 4th and 5th metatarsal and the cupboid bone - did not go to A&E as didn’t realise they were broken took me six weeks to work out they were broken and several months later I am still in agony. Please go you might need to wear a boot for six weeks which is annoying but better than finding out later they are broken and still needing to wear a boot for six weeks.

HarryVanderspeigle · 28/06/2025 21:34

Have you been seen? Definitely right to go to A&E with that sort of injury.

Zaina89 · 28/06/2025 21:55

So I was at the hospital for a while and they actually sent me to the minor injuries unit, where my foot is most painful around my last 2 toes is slightly bruised and swollen and underneath where I feel most pain is also bruised, the rest of my foot and ankle just feel achey and sore, but I’ve had an x ray and thankfully it’s not broken!!

doctor says it’s torn ligaments ( is that a sprain?) when I google it says sprain is on the ankle but my worst pain is at the top of my foot and underneath the top of my foot.

he said it will take a week or two to heal ( maybe 3 if I’m unlucky 🤣) but take painkillers, rest and keep putting ice on it. When I got home I put a compression bandage on it to try and give some support as it’s really painful walking and with 3 kids including a 20month old it’s not realistic to not be able to do nothing unfortunately 🙁 I’m just trying to bear the weight on my heal when I walk but I’m limping. Any suggestions or tips would be most welcome!

yeah okay, just take it easy. I was actually given a compression bandage from the hospital. A walking stick might help (I had one anyway) but it'll help with the walking.

A&E or even possibly minor injuries.

Id actually call NHS111 and ask for advice on where is best to go.Same thing happened to me a few years ago and turns out I’d broken a toe, lol. But there’s not much they can do with a broken toe unfortunately, they just strap it and advise no vigorous exercise for 6 weeks.

Obviously didn’t see the update did I… Jesus.

Tough luck, torn ligaments can be more painful than broken bones. Really the doctor's advice covers it all. Can you get anyone to help with the children?
