Tesco £7 TexMex meal deal isn't possible as a deal?!

Obviously, very much a first world problem so, before people start, I have MUCH bigger things going on - which is probably why this has irked me so much. Partially extremely pissed off because it means I've had to deal with the fact that DH is now somehow utterly lost and needs to be handhold like a 4yo (not the topic of this thread).

So, I'm exhausted, DH has gone to Tesco for a ready meal. I suggested the TexMex £7 meal deal because I thought it looked ok when I was in there.

He's just phoned so say the deal isn't possible: if it's for a main, a side and a dip. But there are no "dips". I thought "maybe the shop is out" - but I looked online, no dips anywhere. I looked on the Tesco website and their social media promos, everywhere (like here - www.facebook.com/danswaygifts/posts/new-7-tex-mex-feast-meal-deal-at-tesco-choose-from-1-main-side-and-dip/1124785196356454/). No dips!

To be clear, there is a dips tray but that's not a "dip" for the purpose of the deal, it's a "side" (this - https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/321539235 - it says "side" on the front in the green star).

I resent paying £7 for "a main, a side and a dip" when they haven't actually produced any dips.

Am I losing my mind? How does something go through all the layers that Tesco must have and not one person notice this monumental cock up?

I've just tried adding it to my online basket, and the dip tray counts as a dip. The three items together come to £7. I added the dip tray, cauli bites and pulled pork.

Goingawayistricky · 26/06/2025 21:12

Have you asked in Tesco?
You may well be right but there is point of sale, shelf placement, delivery etc which all link up…it would be odd if the system hadn’t worked out there was a missing component.

Edited

Nooooo - so the labels are wrong!?

I suggested to DH that the dip tray was the dip but he was adamant it said it was a side, and I checked and it says "side" on the package!

I wasn't in the shop, I looked on their website at everything in the range and the only dips are the dip tray which has "side" printed on it.

I suspect the dips are in fact the dips and it’s just that it’s not clear on the packaging. Has your DH actually tried to buy what he wants and the deal hasn’t worked or is he just assuming the dips count as the side? Has he actually asked staff for assistance?

Lmnop22 · 26/06/2025 21:14

I guess dips are a side as well as being dips?

He hasn't tried to buy it - he wouldn't want to pay for it all separately if the deal doesn't work and doesn't want the faff of having to get it all refunded.

He's not just assuming the dips count as a slide - they're labelled as a "side" on the front of the packaging.

I saw a whole TikTok about this. The dips count both as a side and a dip I think? Confusing a lot of people

tilypu · 26/06/2025 21:16

It's might just be that they've changed the offer, and they still have some product with the older packaging. I don't know.

But it was easy and quick to check by adding to an online basket.

Nesbi · 26/06/2025 21:16

Why has he not scanned the items to see if they add up to £7? If they don’t, he doesn’t have to pay!

I understand why. I am miffed by this mislabelling. I just wanted something quick and easy and it's now ended up with DH making enchiladas from scratch and asking me everything three seconds how to make them properly. It's well natured because he'd make them inedible if he didn't check, but I want to lay down in a dark room and cry instead of having to ask him questions.

I don't have a Tesco account so I couldn't add them to a basket, I can only view the products. DH was trying to buy in store and didn't want to take an incorrect deal up to buy just to return it to the shelves.

This is on your husband, it's easy to either ask a staff member or test it at a self service till. Is he usually a bit of a wet lettuce?

Maybe you should be miffed because neither you nor your husband actually checked if the deal was possible?

He could have done it in-store at the checkout, or online on his phone. You could have checked when he was on the phone.

Tesco haven't done anything wrong. It says the offer includes a dip, and it does. The dip was available to buy. Yes, the packaging isn't clear, but it's easy to find out what the situation is - just neither of you did.

Greencustardmonster · 26/06/2025 21:21

He doesn’t need to get it refunded, just scan it and see what the price is. Or ask a member of staff. Or buy a different meal.

The level of total gormlessness is what I’d expect if I sent my 8 year old into a shop and it was not exactly as they expected. For a competent adult, presumably without disabilities, this is a non issue. Yes it’s mildly annoying Tesco didn’t make it clearer but the actual issue is your DH not Tesco meal deal.

a) it wasn't a wrong deal
b) he wouldn't have to take it back to the shelf - they have staff at the till who do that as part of their job

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 26/06/2025 21:25

Seriously, he had to phone you from the shop to discuss this? Rather than just think, ah well, can't get this deal, I'll buy a pizza and some garlic bread.

For the third time, I wasn't there

Well home made us better than processed crap so take it as an overall win?
He’ll know how to make them next time too.

nomas · 26/06/2025 21:34

A smart person would have got the self-scanner, scanned all 3 items and seen the total price. Or checked at the till or customer service. Your DH is a bit of a dunce.

Would it really have been so much more expensive that he would refund and return the tex mex items and shop for other stuff?

It would've been about £11.50 I think - enough more expensive to be miffed I think, even only on principle.

DH is German and very much of the "rules are rules" mindset.

OP posts:
SpendingTooMuchTimeHere · 26/06/2025 22:07

in this situation I would have found a staff member and asked them to explain where the dips where for the offer.

KrisAkabusi · 26/06/2025 22:09

But could he really not have looked at the stacks of dip and thought "these are dips. They are probably the ones they mean when they say 'includes a dip'. Because they are on the same shelf, under a banner that says Tex mex deal. And they're dips!".
