Can I attend a teaching interview hours after getting back from holdiay?

I have applied for a teaching job, this is just a possibility at the moment but am I right in thinking that if I get back home from a holiday abroad at about 6 PM, its not really possible to be ready to attend a teaching interview the following morning? The interview part of the day I can practice the questions beforehand but planning the actual lesson is stressing me out. However my other option could be to actually plan the lesson whilst on holiday which I need to seriously consider will have to be what I need to do.

If I end up being shortlisted would I be unreasonable to ask if I could delay the interview by one day so I can have longer to plan for the teaching lesson part of the interview.

Also if our flight back home is delayed then who knows what time I could arrive back home at.

I don't really think you can ask to delay the interview. It will be planned around people's availability.

Good luck.

Moonnstars · 26/06/2025 14:41

Unfortunately it's unlikely they will delay it for you. You can ask but usually in teaching all candidates are asked in on the same day.

TheSwarm · 26/06/2025 14:43

There is no harm is asking but be prepared for them to say no.

It's not ideal, but if you are really keen on the job you will just need to do your prep before or during your holiday.

Destiny123 · 26/06/2025 14:44

Unlikely as normally takes a lot of effort to arrange. Maybe for a vital Hospital appt, not a holiday. Will need to prep whilst away (think my partner wants to murder me for watching interview prep videos all hol!) Goodluck

irregularegular · 26/06/2025 14:45

As others have said, no harm in asking.

Cant you do the planning before you go? I wouldn't want to worry about it while I was on holiday.

Luggagerackistopheavy · 26/06/2025 14:45

You can't ask them to rearrange as supply teachers will have been booked for SLT members, governors will have taken time off work etc. You can plan while away and then just type and print it all when you get back the night before. It's not ideal but if you want the job then it's not a big thing.

Disco2022 · 26/06/2025 14:46

Just plan the lesson when you get back, you rarely get much notice for teaching interviews, I've often planned it the night before. If you have anything to print just ask reception as soon as you arrive in the morning (arrive early if you need to do this).

SunshineDeLaSoul · 26/06/2025 14:46

They always do them on the same day and make a decision same day too when I’ve worked in schools

Overthebow · 26/06/2025 14:46

I would plan the lesson and prepare for the interview whilst on holiday if it were me.

Disco2022 · 26/06/2025 14:47

Obviously if they are a rare school that have given you the lesson in loads of time then you could do it before. But we usually send it out a few days prior to interview.

Babyboomtastic · 26/06/2025 14:52

If I'm honest, I don't see the issue.
Just do it before or on holiday. It's not great fun, but that's life really. It's quite convenient really because you've potentially got more time.

Tbh it's rare that I don't take some work on holiday. It's not unusual.

I'd personally think quite poorly of someone who wanted to delay an interview so they didn't have to prep for it on holiday or on advance given they aren't even willing to go the extra mile for their own interview. Sorry.

Hayley1256 · 26/06/2025 15:06

I'd plan it in the plane

CarpetKnees · 26/06/2025 15:23

The question you ask in your OP and the question in your title, need different answers, so I can't vote.

Of course you can attend an interview the day after you get back.

Of course you can't request that the panel reconvene on another day. I mean you might be able to ask that question if you were attending a parent's funeral on that day, but not so you can 'have another day to prepare'. You can't seriously think this would be a good idea ?

Newbutoldfather · 26/06/2025 15:27

It kind of depends on the subject.

If it is Maths, Physics or Chemistry, they will probably work around you.

Pretty much everything else, they won’t be as flexible.

When I was working as a physics teacher, we offered a full time physics job to someone who immediately turned round and requested 90% with very specific non availability times (childcare). The head of science still offered her the job!

Scarcity subjects are really hard to get good people for. But, if you are any good, teaching a lesson should be fine the day after your holiday.
