Super loud co worker driving me mad

Im a mum who works the nightshift at a supermarket. There are seven of us in total and I really can't stand one of my co-workers who started working for the company last month. He's obnoxiously loud, talks so much, gets worked up over the smallest things and always asks me questions but then answers them himself or decides to completely ignore the answer I've given him (I.e. "what needs doing next?" Can you top up the beer aisle please? It needs doing. "Okay. But it's been done yesterday so it doesn't need doing." ...then proceeds to do something else. He shouts across the room, laughs at everything, and when it comes to politics and history, he just won't shut up about it. He will go on and on and he will contradict you and bombard you with so much s*it when you decide to give your opinion (not even a controversial one...Just a general opinion). I've basically just shut him out and just decided to ignore him unless he asks work related questions but he is now getting riled up that I'm not talking to him and basically telling everyone that I'm not a nice person.

Like what? I'm tired, I want peace and quiet. I go home and i do house work and look after my son. I get very little sleep and still need to get ready for work the next evening. I seriously can't deal with this man but he does do his job despite the problems I have with him. I just wish he is more quiet about it like everyone else.

Should I mention this to my line manager? Honestly, his super loud personality is giving me a headache and he and I work in the same section.

You could mention that he has been making malicious comments about you (saying you're "not a nice person" to others). I'd avoid that at this stage though.

Speak to him one-to-one, away from others (that will only stoke the flames of tension with others listening and chiming in). Explain to him that you simply have a different way of working to him and that you like to be quiet when working unless a work related anomaly becomes apparent. See how he responds.

If you continue to have him talking about you behind your back, then raise it with a line manager but it's best to try and discreetly rectify the issue first.

Do not do this. Do not speak to him without other people around. How he will respond is with escalation and more bullying. Yes, he is bullying you.

Talk to your line manager privately and tell them everything you put in your post.

In a previous role, I went straight to a line manager and the person I complained about got sacked. All of the other employees then hated me and made life very difficult for me.

In other scenarios, I've found taking a colleague to one side and asking what their problem is got the best responses.
