Birthday gift trip - city chosen sounds dangerous!

Lyrixs21 · 25/06/2025 10:01

It was my birthday yesterday, and my partner booked a surprise trip for the two of us plus our 3 year old to go to Brussels on the Eurostar for two nights next weekend (4th July).

Neither of us have been to Brussels before, or indeed Belgium, so I excitedly started to do some research last night once he told me what the surprise was. As I delved into searches about Brussels, once thing kept coming up - how unsafe it is! I didn't go looking for information on safety, but it just seems to be a constant feature of discussions on the city. It's not a city I know anything about (bar always thinking it sounds a bit boring) but my main takeaways from my extensive research last night is that it is unsafe (shootings, drugs, petty crime) has a level 3 terrorist threat currently ('Serious') and is just generally dirty, unsavoury, and boring.

I now don't want to go after reading all that, and particularly don't want to bring my three year old and put her in any danger. I'm a little surprised my partner booked it in one sense, as it's very hard to find anything positive online about it!

Do I:

  • Tell him what I've read online and how I feel and that I'd prefer not to go? This seems a little rude given he has spent time and money researching things and booking it for my birthday, and I know I'll end up feeling bad.
  • Or, do I go, put up with it, but potentially not enjoy it because I'm worrying about safety and feel anxious and on edge? Based on what I'm reading I'm really not keen. I have found since we've had our daughter I am more concerned about safety generally but I expect that's normal?!

He did mention he looked at Amsterdam but that the hotels were crazy expensive another option for me might be to offer to pay for the hotel in Amsterdam and we change the Eurostar to go there? That way, we are still going and still going to experience the Eurostar and have the weekend away, but without me fretting and not really wanting to be there!

Any thoughts welcome.

It’s the same as any capital city. My brother has lived there for years and raised a family there, albeit in a very affluent area.

Like all cities you probably don’t want to hang out around the train station and keep an eye on your bags in touristy areas. The metro can be edgier and dirtier than London, but it’s mostly fine.

I wouldn’t say it’s the most thrilling city in the Europe - Barcelona or Berlin are livelier. It’s not the prettiest, Bruges or Amsterdam would be better if you want photogenic. It’s just a nice enough, smallish city with excellent chocolate, beer, and frites.

If the weather is good, take a picnic to the Bois de la Cambre. Potter around the Sunday antique market at the Sablon. Buy some Pierre Marcolini chocolate, visit the Atomium.

whitewineandsun · 25/06/2025 11:36

You think Amsterdam is safer than Brussels?

DontTouchRoach · 25/06/2025 11:37

LOL. All big cities have some dodgy areas but Brussels is no more dangerous than any other capital city in Europe.

I seriously thought you were going to say you were being taken to Port-au-Prince or Baghdad. Brussels is really, really not an adventurous trip.

AvidJadeShaker · 25/06/2025 11:38

I went at Christmas, there can be a few unsavoury people around the railway stations but no more than any other city.

There’s certain enough to fill your days there or you could travel to Bruges for the day.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 25/06/2025 11:40

Brussels is not dangerous! I’ve been there a few times and felt incredibly safe.

And I wouldn’t call it boring either. Day trip to Ghent sounds really good as a pp suggested too.

museumum · 25/06/2025 11:40

I think Brussels is quite similar to London in that there are areas with issues with knife crime, drugs and a generally high terrorist threat, but that tourists, and most residents even, don't encounter these at all. Don't go walking at night into the more downmarket suburbs, watch your bag and pockets around the main train station but really its no worse than London, Paris, Rome etc.

Duckswaddle · 25/06/2025 11:41

Brussels is a great city! I don’t understand what you’re worried about.
Definitely go to Bruges as well, it’s absolutely beautiful.

I thought it would be something like this too!

My parents have just come back from 5 days in Brussels. They are 85 and 87. They took the Eurostar and had a great time. Brussels is a safe as any major city.

WordOfTheDay · 25/06/2025 11:42

I travel to Brussels regularly for work and enjoy the city centre and sights on each trip. It is safe and full of delights for tourists, particularly in the summer, of course.

Presumably, what you have read is coloured by problems in some dodgier suburbs or neighbourhoods that are not near where tourists are visiting, or by the standard risk of pickpocketing, etc. that is present in any city.

Seeing as you don't know Brussels and now have these negative misconceptions, you should definitely not avoid it, rather you should go and thoroughly enjoy it with your daughter and husband. That way, you can right this wrong and not miss out on a great opportunity.

This is what I want to be when I grow up.

Brussels is a great city, DH and I have been several times. You should visit the Grand Place, it's very impressive. Plus, there are lots of lovely chocolate shops!

Iloveshoes123 · 25/06/2025 11:45

I think you are being way over the top, it will be the same in any city and I think it would be ridiculous to cancel it but as an alternative you could get a train to Bruges which is lovely and much smaller and safer.

WordOfTheDay · 25/06/2025 11:47

People mention the existence of dodgy areas or suburburbs, that is correct just like absolutely EVERY city. The point is that you are not going to visit any dodgy areas or suburbs. You are a tourist going to visit the beautiful heart of the city.

Ohthatsabitshit · 25/06/2025 11:47

Go, sit in a big square, eat mussels, visit chocolate/biscuit shops, buy lace or embroidery, drink weird flavoured beers, have fun.. nothing particularly terrifying is likely to happen.

828Pax · 25/06/2025 11:47

Brussels is absolutely lovely, I've been a few times and never felt unsafe at all

Groundhedgehogday · 25/06/2025 11:48

Brussels? Ooh yeah, watch out in case someone gives you too much chocolate on your waffle.

Henbags · 25/06/2025 11:48

Oh my god, get a grip.

silkypyjamas · 25/06/2025 11:48

Blimey, not exactly Beirut! 🙄

LoveWine123 · 25/06/2025 11:48

Brussels a dangerous city?? OP, are you anxious about things in general? This is a very odd take on a weekend trip to Brussels.

buzzheath · 25/06/2025 11:49

Is this a joke? Do you live under a rock?

estrogone · 25/06/2025 11:52

Here you go OP. Sounds like the algorithms got you.

Fuzzy Search/Approximate String Matching:

This technique allows search engines to find results that are similar to your search term, even if they aren't an exact match. For example, if you search for "caer", it might also return results for "car" or "care".

Personalisation:

Search engines use algorithms to tailor results based on your past searches, location, and other factors. This can mean that you see different results than someone else searching for the same thing, even if you're using the same search engine.

Filter Bubbles:

This personalization can sometimes lead to "filter bubbles," where you are primarily shown content that confirms your existing beliefs and opinions, potentially limiting your exposure to diverse perspectives.

Other factors:

Search engine algorithms also consider things like the quality of the content, the relevance of the page to your query, and the authority of the website.

Example:

If you often search for information about hiking in Victoria, Google might prioritise results about hiking trails in Victoria or related gear when you search for "hiking". If someone else frequently searches for "hiking" in New South Wales, they might see more results about hiking in that state.

BumpyWinds · 25/06/2025 11:52

I just looked up the FCO travel advice for Brussels and also France and Spain - they're all the same. There's the danger of a terrorist attack in any big city but what are you going to do? Never leave your own town or village ever again?

I agree with PPs - go, look up what touristy things there are to do. Be vigilant, just as you would in any big city. Don't go waving your phone or purse in public, keep out of the way of pickpockets.

Miserableaf · 25/06/2025 11:56

There are some areas that have significant problems, more related to terror threats. But this is an ongoing issue for intel not for visitors. As anywhere, Inc London, there could be an attack and If so follow the advice to get away safely.

Watch out for the usual problems around tourist areas and the main station. I personally feel these are at a much lower level than in Paris. Used to work regularly in both. Grand Place and surrounding restaurants are amazing. Get out to Ghent for a day. Enjoy trying waffles.

Rotterdam may be a much cheaper option than Amsterdam. You can always train in. If you want to be close to Amsterdam and don’t mind not having the local atmosphere there are cheap hotels around the airport and you can quickly train in.

Pinty · 25/06/2025 11:58

Brussels is no more dangerous than any other big city. You could read the same about London, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam etc.
If you worry about every possible dangerous situation you would never leave your house.
