Angelofmycoins · 25/06/2025 09:54

I know broad beans are in season.

Asked local massive Sainsbury's whether they have them and the man on fruit tells me - "no, sorry. They are not in season by the way"

So unnecessary whey they are

I just got a packet in Lidl...

GluttonousHag · 25/06/2025 10:02

But presumably you said ‘Yes, they are’?

I got some last weekend at the farmers’ market. Delicious.

5foot5 · 25/06/2025 10:03

Well, TBF, they are only just coming in to season.

I think it most likely the fruit and veg assistant you spoke to (probably irrelevant whether male or female) isn't all that knowledgeable about what is or isn't actually in season, they are just basing this on what they have in stock.

MeringueOutang · 25/06/2025 10:04

Telling you something that's not correct isn't the same as mansplaining just because it was a man that said it. The guy just got it wrong.

skymagentatwo · 25/06/2025 10:05

🙄Not really mansplaining is it.

AtomicBlondeRose · 25/06/2025 10:06

It was mansplaining because she didn't ask if they were in season or not, he just decided to tell her that! And was wrong to boot. Sounds like the epitome of mansplaining to me.

Glitchymn1 · 25/06/2025 10:07

Oh for god sake. Don’t worry AI robots will be taking over soon 🤣 I wouldn’t call it mansplaining, just conversation/ a comment. It hasn’t had a lasting impact on your day I hope!

Gettingbysomehow · 25/06/2025 10:08

Broad beans are one of the vegetables that can be grown all year round so WTF?

Anxioustealady · 25/06/2025 10:14

He was probably just trying to be helpful or explain that they aren't in the back waiting to be put out so you didn't keep coming back looking.

It's not that big of a deal either way.

This!

Mansplaining 😄 We all know that that is a buzz word on here but it really isn't relevant in this case OP.
He wasn't complaining about the lack of broad beans, 'but I want some, why haven't you got any? blah blah.
No big deal, you knew, he didn't - why not go the whole hogg and ask demand he be trained up to know everything on his section of work.😄

BlueandPinkSwan · 25/06/2025 10:23

Reading some of the responses on here is amusing. How do some people get through life? Offense taken at the smallest thing, would you comment if it had been a woman working there and had said the same thing? Probably not.

No it's not, it's just talking utter bollox.

MagpiePi · 25/06/2025 10:30

I'd call it gaslighting, and he's is probably a narcissist too.

LTB.

GreenCatfood · 25/06/2025 10:50

I once had to tell the bloke on the checkout what the mysterious vegetable I was buying was. It was a parsnip. My point is, just because someone works in a supermarket, it doesn't mean they are an expert or even have basic knowledge of the products they sell. I don't think this example is mansplaining because you didn't tell him they were in season and he incorrectly "corrected" you, he just made an inaccurate statement that he believed true.

How is it mansplaining? Just because he is a man I dont see the connection in this case

JoshLymanSwagger · 25/06/2025 11:30

Disgusting beany little fuckers. 🤢

We can only know if it was mansplaining if he simply says "no, sorry" when a man asks the same question.

Can you arrange that OP?

The BTW has a whiff of "in case you didn't realise" about it, which is patronising.

mandarinduck110 · 26/06/2025 16:34

they really aren't always in season. im growing them now, they're just about ripe and will only last for another 6 weeks or so. im starting to pick daily and feeeze.

whilst you can plant them in autumn they won't be ready for harvesting until nowish
or you can plant in spring.

theyre a bugger for black and green fly. I am always disappointed by the size of the pod versus the size of the bean.
