Neighbour’s bin appears to be a permanent feature on pavement

I have a rather unpleasant neighbour who previously stopped one of his visitors from moving their car when it was blocking my drive. I had asked nicely and needed to get out of my drive urgently but he told him to come in “for a cup of tea” first and insisted that he ignore me. Now this same neighbour appears to be permanently leaving a new bin from the council along the hedge separating my drive from his. It’s been there for about three weeks and I’m now worried this is to be a permanent feature. The bin won’t be used till August but no one else has left their bin on the pavement. Am I being petty?

It will get used.

I think if people want to cause a public inconvenience by leaving their bin on the pavement (not on a bin day and excluding those who don’t have any front/rear access to store their bin) then it’s fair to use as a public convenience to dispose of bagged dog waste and litter.

Ignore it, he’s trying to wind you up and you’re letting him succeed 🙂

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 25/06/2025 10:52

What kind of bin…. You could prove a point quietly.

GasPanic · 25/06/2025 10:54

It may well end up getting nicked and then he will have to shell out for a new one.

Vaxtable · 25/06/2025 10:59

Check your council website. For mine if people leave bins out they can be fined!

GrumpyTwatFace · 25/06/2025 11:00

Set it on fire
Steal it

Just get over it, OP 😏

DeliaOwens · 25/06/2025 11:09

Protect your own peace. If the bin is not in your way or blocking you from reversing out of your driveway, pretend it doesn’t exist. It is annoying, and he has left it there to annoy you. But do not let it. Rise above and get on with your day.

Lmnop22 · 25/06/2025 11:21

Why does it bother you so much that there’s a bin outside?

Presumably you only see it on your way in and out so just ignore it?

icelolly12 · 25/06/2025 11:29

If it's blocking your way or on your property then just move it. If it's on his property not much you can do other than ask him to move it. If it's on general public access, I'd move it onto his property.

This.

Otherwise, start using his bin as if it were your own!

Not sure what bin it would be that won't be used until August (unless you're down under and it's a garden waste bin!), but some councils have a requirement that bins are taken back to your own property.

If it was bothering you that much you could report it, but you're more likely to wind him up back by not showing any concern about it!

Our local council has a "Household waste collection policy" that says:

"Containers must not be placed out for collection before 5pm the day before collection. The Council has the right to remove any bins left on the highway outside of the hours specified. Residents will be charged for new containers should this be the case."

We've just been given new bins to add to the others. The new system starts in August.

pharmer · 25/06/2025 12:14

Is it a new bin? Why won't it be used til August?

This but if your council is as useless as mine, they won't do anything. Just take the bin and say you thought it didn't belong to anyone since it was left out on the street for ages...

justkeepswimingswiming · 25/06/2025 12:41

just move it or pay a kid to go fly tip the bin in a bush somewhere.

Oh I wouldn't expect our council to do anything!

If you're based in the UK you can do a fixmystreet report possibly though to report an "abandoned" bin.

PreetyinPurple · 25/06/2025 13:31

Has he got a camera? If not I’d wait till he was out and push it to another street and leave it.

Mumz1 · 25/06/2025 16:33

Thanks all. It’s a new bin just for plastic that’s been introduced by the council. Right now we have one bin for paper and plastic. We live in a cul de sac so unlikely that it’ll be used by passers by. Part of me wants to rise above it and another part wants to report it to the council as an unclaimed bin. Not sure about property lines (could be combination of mine, his and council) but it’s just a bit of an eye sore and starting to worry it’ll be there forever!

Think yourself lucky you're not in Birmingham.

My neighbours have had their bins on the street for 6 months now ....
