Bread Rolls

Bollynicks · 24/06/2025 22:41

Got a Tesco delivery on Friday which included bread rolls. Dh went to make the last two rolls for his lunch today and they had little bits of mould at the side of them (just on one side) I said just pick the mould off they will be fine. Dh said that was disgusting and binned them.

What's your thoughts Mumsneters would you eat mouldy rolls?

Team dh = you are being unreasonable
Team Bolly = you are not being unreasonable

I would pick off the mould and eat them (and have done in the past, and lived to tell the tale..)

Bin

Defo pick mould off

lovemycbf · 24/06/2025 22:54

Ohh yuck 🤮 I’d bin them as mould isn’t just on the surface

MeringueOutang · 24/06/2025 22:56

Team DH. If it's on the outside, it's usually elsewhere as well. 🤢

Same. Done it with bread too.

I wouldn’t eat them however bread rolls do not last long especially the bakery kind.

AncoraAmarena · 25/06/2025 06:45

I used to do this, pick the mould off and eat them. But, as a PP said, the mould just isn't on the outside. The spores go further down and the last time I did this I got the most horrific food poisoning.

That was 12 years ago and I've never done it since. I'd have binned the rolls, for sure.

If there’s visible mould then there will be harmful spores all over the bread. There should be some research available if you do a quick search.

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 25/06/2025 06:48

No, even if you pick the mould off it still has that mouldy taste. I've accidentally bit into mouldy bread and known straight away even when I didn't bite into visible mould.

Nomorelabubus · 25/06/2025 06:49

I'd bin. There's probably mould inside too and they would not taste fresh.

onetrickrockingpony · 25/06/2025 06:52

With bread there will be mould that goes deeper than what is visible, and you’ll be able to taste it. This is very different to hard cheese where you can cut the affected areas off.

If it were a large loaf I would maybe see if there was an unaffected area right in the middle, a good 5 inches at least away from the mould. But then I’d throw the rest out.

bin the rolls.

Bitzee · 25/06/2025 06:58

Bread isn’t like cheese where if you cut off what you can see and the rest will be fine. The spores go further down and you’re risking making yourself quite unwell for the sake of a cheap bread roll which is absolutely not worth it. DH was right to bin them.

Agix · 25/06/2025 07:02

Bin. If there is mould on the surface of the bread, picking off whats visible won't get rid of what's invisible to the naked eye inside.

There's making an effort to not be wasteful, and then there's just plain gross. This is gross, and it's unnecessary.

Wheech · 25/06/2025 07:05

Team DH for the reasons PP have said. I'd cut mould off some things but not bread. I have no fear of making myself ill as I have a cast iron stomach but the taste of mouldy bread is minging.

OfficerChurlish · 25/06/2025 07:16

I wouldn't personally eat them, but if another adult in my household wanted to cut off the mold and eat them I wouldn't mind. I'd also reconsider buying this type of bread from this source because it shouldn't go moldy so fast. It may also be worth considering keeping bread products in the 'fridge, especially if it's hot where you are?

bloodredfeaturewall · 25/06/2025 08:50

never eat bread with mould

Bollynicks · 25/06/2025 15:17

Think you guys are right and I was thinking along the same lines as cheese. Will change my mouldy ways Grin
