Next sale ...irresponsible?

Bloodylovecheese · 24/06/2025 20:20

Just had this message from Next
Sign up for premium advance access to sale, but only if you apply for credit/pay in 3.
Anyone else this this is irresponsible in this climate and encouraging people to take out loans in this way?
No wonder people are drowning in debt.

Next sale ...irresponsible?

It feels like this should be illegal

Right? I'm sure it's not as surely they wouldn't be this stupid but I'm sure trading standards wouldn't look on this very well.

EsmeSusanOgg · 24/06/2025 20:37

They've been spamming me this by text. I've been ignoring. But it does feel very aggressive for sales of a credit agreement.

ShoutOutLucile · 24/06/2025 21:05

I agree with you, it’s outrageous.

What is this 'pay in 3' ? I saw it somewhere else earlier and was like WTF does that mean?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 24/06/2025 21:17

Well they are certainly targeting a certain type of customer.

On the other hand nothing stops a person from signing up, getting the benefit, paying off the credit immediately, then never using the credit again. So in that sense I don’t feel bad.

The APR is very prominently displayed so I don’t really think anyone is being misled or this is unfair in any way.

jesihar · 24/06/2025 21:18

I wish people would say why they have voted the opposite way to the existing comments.

Totally agree OP. As do the comments. But who are those voting that you are being unreasonable

I think it is the Next version of payment methods like Klarna, where you pay in three equal instalments with no interest.

I have had a Next account for years but always pay it off in full each month but they shouldn't be pushing these on people that don't ask for them.

Bloodylovecheese · 24/06/2025 21:27

It's the fact that if you don't sign up...which means a credit check, you don't get early access to the sale.
Shocking in my eyes.

Is it shocking when you get rewards like money back for gas or access to an airport lounge from using a credit card🤷‍♀️

This is hardly a new concept and used by every large credit card company.

moose62 · 24/06/2025 22:03

All companies use this sort of marketing....Next offer a first dibs on their sale if you have a next account. You don't have to spend anything on your Next account if you don't want to.
I have a Next account...haven't signed up to any '3 in 1' and always get a priority sale slot even when the balance is nil.

Promo981 · 24/06/2025 22:04

Not really a sale if you have to pay that much interest.

But you don’t have to pay that interest. I mean yes they hope you do, but doesn’t appear to be required.

I get early access to the sale and I don’t have next credit card. I’m mot quite sure why I get it ( possibly because I buy quite a lot from there throughout the year)

yoshiblue · 24/06/2025 22:11

Wow! I work for a major financial institution and our governance processes would no way sign this off!

Whaleadthesnail · 24/06/2025 22:24

My understanding is that it's to preview the sale, rather than actually access it.

However I do think you have a point, it feels off

Preview and book an access slot to purchase.
So a credit search on your record to 'look and what you could've won' if you don't get accepted 🤔

To be fair they signed me up for a Next account with my first online order and didn't even get me to consent or tell me they were doing a credit check, opening a credit account or anything, they just wouldn't take payment until a month later when they sent a statement. That was in 2012. So they've got a history of being skeevy to get more credit signups. After that experience, I won't shop with them because of these sort of tactics.

You still seem shocked by this. It’s credit. It will cost you money to use. It’s all pretty standard. If you don’t want to have your checked or use credit you are not obligated to.

Dare I say it just like every amusement park in the world. You can pay a premium for fast pass, early access, get discounts, etc.

Why is this shocking or new in your world? This kind of thing has been going on for ages.

Shitmonger · 25/06/2025 00:19

APR for a pay in 3/4 plan? I thought the point of them was that there wasn’t any interest. Hmm

Edit: Just looked it up and saw that the interest only applies if you miss payments, which also seems a bit odd to me.

Not really enough people will miss payments to make it profitable.

To the thread at large:

Let’s just break this down.

  1. this program costs virtually nothing to Next. They aren’t giving much if anything away. And marketing costs for spamming emails is minimal.
  2. Enough people will want this benefit enough to either sign up for the credit or the 3 pay thing.
  3. Of those people in #2 enough people will use the credit and 3pay to purchase something.
  4. Of the purchases from #3 some of those will not pay in full or on time
  5. Of those from #4 some will A) pay interest or B) default
  6. There is enough in 4A) to make additional profit or 4B) will result in Next taking a tax write off (I’m assuming this is allowed under your tax laws)
  7. Having credit available makes people more likely to start over at #3 in the future.

Basically it costs them nothing, they sell goods, and they make money from 4A to make it worth their time. This really is intro to credit and should not be a shock to anyone. If it is, then please find yourself some reputable sources on personal finance and educate yourselves.

ShoutOutLucile · 25/06/2025 15:57

It’s also another way to ‘Big Up’ their sale. That’s why they have is at 6am or whatever it is and why they have this priority access for the online sale.
