To take voluntary severance?

Started a new job 4 months ago. They are restructuring and now there are 3 roles for 5 people.

They have offered 5 months pay tax free as severance if anyone of the 5 would like to take it or be redeployed to another part of the business for slightly less pay.

I like the team, the job is fine but not my forever job, there are roles out there to apply for where I live and we could manage if it took slightly longer to find a new job.

So do I-

Take the money and find a new job (NBU) or stick it out and see what happens?

I would take the money and look for a new job if there are plenty available. Especially as you don’t love the job, you may end up getting redeployed and miss out on the money

GardenGaff · 24/06/2025 18:19

I’d take the money and run.

FancyCatSlave · 24/06/2025 18:20

Take the money. My lot (public sector) are only paying 6 months severance for 10 years service!

If you are confident about another role elsewhere it’s a no brainer.

Caravaggiouch · 24/06/2025 18:21

If it’s available to you that’s a cracking offer after only being there 4 months.

Glenthebattleostrich · 24/06/2025 18:30

Four agreeing with my gut feeling, I think you are right. Take the money and run!

I agree with the others OP. Good luck.

I'd get out, I think it's a good deal for you and also you leave the job for those who have been there ages and either like it or can't find employment elsewhere. How long did it take to get this job, if it was quick there's a good chance you can be in a new job well within the 5 months. Also if one of them lose a job they like then you leave in the next year or so there will be bad blood through your notice period if the remaining team members were close to them.

Take the money. It will be tax free and worth more and you are lucky to be included in the offer.

skinnyoptionsonly · 24/06/2025 18:40

You may be aware but before you decide, check the amounts. Obviously I don’t know your salary so I may be off base, but they can only do the first 30k of redundancy money tax free regardless of what they say. And that’s only the actual severance pay. Pilon and holiday pay etc cannot be tax free.

worth checking

Hehe, I know what organisation this is. I work there too. It’s a right mess. Take the money and run. Good luck.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/06/2025 20:12

Look on it practically - if you don't volunteer, they'll just look for a compulsory - and then won't have to pay you more than 4 weeks and would probably just refuse to pass your probationary instead.

Glenthebattleostrich · 24/06/2025 21:19

Some excellent points. I think you have all just confirm my gut feelings. I'm sending the signed paperwork in the morning and fingers crossed skipping off into the sunset!!

Another positive is if they decided I had to stay I'd look like the good guy willing to take one for the team!!!

@SnipTealDrama I've PM'd you!

I'd also go for it, I have recently taken voluntary severance from a job I hated, after talking myself out of it twice before when it was offered.
