To leave verrucas alone if they don’t bother me

I have had them most of my life since I got my first in childhood and I’ve never treated them they sometimes do go away after many years but always come back after a while. I noticed I have some again after 3 years of being verruca free. they don’t bother me. so is it okay to leave them alone?

Just be careful not to spread them to other people.

I had a couple which I lived with for years. Suddenly I had 30...then 50... Absolute mosaic of the little bastards. Defied all methods of extermination, even when seen at hospital dermatology. Walking was so painful. Then they all died when I had a baby.

I haven't been so relaxed when others have popped up. Once bitten...

However, when my son had some, I left them alone and they took a couple of years to go away causing no real issue.

UndermyShoeJoe · 24/06/2025 18:01

I guess that depends are you taking precautions to make sure you don’t spread them to anyone else? I’m thinking things like swimming as well as just to others in your home.

Ace56 · 24/06/2025 18:01

YABU as other people could catch them. I hope you don’t go to your local swimming pool…

NotTheRealStacy · 24/06/2025 18:04

I have had one for over 17 years, I trim it with a razor regularly so it isn’t painful to walk on. My kids have never caught it.

Nope I don’t go to the local pool, hate swimming!

hollyjolly12 · 24/06/2025 18:05

Please do try to remove them as others have said, to prevent them spreading to other people. My daughter has had two recently (presumably caught from swimming) and I found a brand called Wartie plasters (Amazon sell them) to be incredibly effective, reasonably priced and removed them within about 10 days.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 24/06/2025 18:09

put gaffa tape on them. It's also a viral thing so up your fruit and veg... get some sun.

They walk among us.

just another reason to never go barefoot in someone else's home. Or do the one leg hop in store changing rooms etc

ConfusedSloth · 24/06/2025 18:23

This is exclusively ok if you take very strict precautions not to spread them. Otherwise, I’d put it in the same camp as parents who know their DCs have nits, do nothing and send them off to school to infect the whole class - again!

Megifer · 24/06/2025 18:25

Yanbu I've always left mine after I really angered one trying to get rid of it and made it worse. Haven't had one for a while now 🤞

YankSplaining · 24/06/2025 18:26

My older daughter had four on her feet, which we’ve just got rid of. My younger daughter has three stubborn ones that haven’t gone yet. I’d say you’re not unreasonable if and only if you never go around barefoot.

WafflingDreamer · 24/06/2025 18:29

I have loads of verrucas and have had them since teenage years. I have paid out thousands over the years for treatment including seeing a podiatrist every month for well over a year. They are very deeply embedded into my feet now and incredibly painful. I wear verruca socks all the time

Backgroundnoises · 24/06/2025 21:43

I really don't know that there is a reliable way of getting rid of verrucas. I had a random one about 15 years ago which hung around for about 18 months then completely disappeared overnight despite no treatment. I got another one about 4 years ago which spontaneously disappeared after about 18 months too but was quickly followed by a massive one further up the same foot at the side of my heel then two more on the same heel which show no signs of disappearing so I've been doing a bit of research on how to get rid of them... I'm gutted to realise that while people have had a specific treatment work for them, nail polish, duct tape, bazuka to name just a few, there is no treatment guaranteed to work for everyone. It just seems luck whether they go away or not. I'm convinced COVID screwed with my immune system as I've had all sorts of weird things crop up,; boils, insect bites that take 6 months to heal, and now these groups of bloody verrucas! My favourite suggested cure was one woman who wore her sweatiest, mankiest pair of old shoes for days on end with no socks, keeping her feet as dirty as she could bear. Couldn't bear to try it though!

Didimum · 24/06/2025 22:07

YANBU. Verrucas ‘going away’ after treatment of whatever kind is more often not a fluke, as they do clear up on their own. Adults will seldom catch them as the skin on their feet is hardened. Children catch them easily due to soft, penetrable skin.

Ponderingwindow · 24/06/2025 22:10

You have a responsibility to treat because realistically you can’t prevent spreading to other people unless you are incredibly careful.

Tessiebear2023 · 24/06/2025 22:22

Verrucas can be tricky, if I were you I'd at least try to get them treated. They could get completely out of hand and become uncomfortable. If your immune system gets affected by illness or normal aging, you could land yourself with a horrible problem down the line. I'd go to a chiropodist, don't take your feet for granted, they are essential for your health and, a bit like teeth, can land you in a world of pain if you ignore issues.

Landlubber2019 · 24/06/2025 22:27

DC had a verrucas which despite treating frequently with every possible treatment known to man, it persisted or came back with a vengeance and so went to the GP for advice. Was told to leave it alone and magically it vanished and he hasn't had one since.

Bizarrely the same happened to me. It was a blighter from the gym shower that hung on through gp freezings and all sorts.

The treatments are basically all versions of stimulating the immune system, so when I got pregnant I checked with gp whether I should stop prodding my immune system with wart treatments ( as holding on to a “foreign” embryo requires suppressing it - which the body does naturally in pregnancy). Gp agreed. The bloody verrucca promptly vanished - despite the pregnancy having theoretically suppressed my immunity. It was so weird but I’ve heard it time and again.

Maybe get pregnant op!

The other weird solution seems to be duct tape/ firmly applied fabric band aids but you have to be fastidious at bunging more on when you change it over or the tape gets loose or it gets a big slurp of light/oxygen/whichever the duct tape starved it of. Seems to take a few months.

You insipired me to look into these, I didn’t buy the wartime ones but similar, plasters with a circle filled with some red substance. I am on day 3 of treating my 17 (at least) year old verruca. It seems to be doing something and I am having fun attacking it with the little scalpel that came with them. I am concerned that I will be left with a giant crater in my foot though as it seems to be deep!
