Ice coffee habits

My DC has been buying big bottles of ice coffee and drinking it like it's a milkshake. They're 15, I don't think they should be having that much caffeine at this age, they definitely don't need it and it's making them noticeably hyperactive.

I talked to them about not drinking so much but I'm thinking of putting a stop to it altogether. AIBU? I feel like I might be. Am I being too overprotective?

You're "thinking of" putting a stop to it?

I would. YANBU.

YANBU

How do you plan on stopping it?

Wolfiefan · 24/06/2025 16:37

My 15 year old has iced coffee. But one small glass a day at most. They need to cut back that’s all.

Optimustime · 24/06/2025 16:38

The calories in those things are ridiculous too.

Dartmoorcheffy · 24/06/2025 16:38

Get some decaff and make it at home to solve the problem. It will taste just as good.

Poynsettia · 24/06/2025 16:39

Can’t he make his own with decaff. They also have loads of sugar.
So he could make his own slightly less unhealthy version.

Bitzee · 24/06/2025 16:39

Specifically what is it and how many are they having? Iced latte type thing or a those triple shot espresso cans? I know you say like a milkshake but most people wouldn’t have more than 1 milkshake a day plus the caffeine can vary wildly depending on whether it’s an iced latte type thing or a triple shot espresso can. But something that would be equivalent to 1 regular coffee a day would be fine at 15. Can’t they just cut back? If it’s at home don’t buy it but you can’t really control what they do when they’re out at that age.

evtheria · 24/06/2025 16:41

They probably should cut back. Besides the caffeine the ready-made drinks are also usually high in sugar, unless it’s the very expensive ‘cold brew, unsweetened’ (very caffeinated!) kind.

Is your Dc likely to listen to you? Do they realise how much caffeine is in a serving? Or are they the type who doesn’t care, and will just buy it when out and about so you won’t know?

Those things have loads of sugar as well as the caffeine. I would just buy more milk and some decaff coffee and tell them to make their own. You can buy flavoured syrups so they can flavour it with vanilla, hazelnut, caramel etc
