To think women’s Jeans are aimed at attracting male glances

LemonLime2 · 23/06/2025 18:09

I swear every bloody pair of jeans these days is almost skin tight. I must have been in about 7 shops earlier and couldn’t find a suitable pair that don’t cling to me.

Is it silly to suggest that the reason they are designed this way is to appeal to the male glance? It certainly isn’t for comfort! You don’t see any men walking round in skin tight jeans.

Is there anything some MNetters won’t blame on the patriarchy?

The male gaze is a crock anyway. Women choose what to wear in this country. It’s not like Iran. Some choose to wear skin tight jeans, and it may even be to - shock, horror - attract the opposite sex!

squashyhat · 23/06/2025 18:49

M&S boyfriend jeans are the opposite of tight. My go-to now I'm in my 60s.

Fluffyowl00 · 23/06/2025 18:50

I think whatever the shape we all need to get in there and buy some jeans quickly as, after 10 years of high waisted jeans I have a horrible feeling that low waisted jeans are going to come back into fashion any time now. My mid 40s midriff is already quivering (wobbling) in fear.

StMarie4me · 23/06/2025 18:54

Buy a bigger size….

Allseeingallknowing · 23/06/2025 18:57

What about tracksuit bottoms with JUICY written across the rear?

SuburbanSprawl · 23/06/2025 19:08

@LemonLime2 You don’t see any men walking round in skin tight jeans.

You do if you look properly.

cyvguhb · 23/06/2025 19:09

There are about a bazillion different styles of jeans available, most of them not skin tight

Do you look for things to be problematic?

unsync · 23/06/2025 19:11

501s. I've just got a new pair after not having worn them for 35 odd years. Fit perfectly at the waist, not close fitting elsewhere and so comfortable.

choccytime · 23/06/2025 19:12

Ha not mine! I'm a14 but get 16 in mom jeans so comfy

Birdsinginginthetrees · 23/06/2025 19:19

Get them from somewhere like Toast. A lot of their clothes seem tent-like and baggy so I’m sure you’ll find something you like there.

Mercurial123 · 23/06/2025 19:20

YABVU so many jeans are loose fitting/baggy. It's no longer 2015 when skinny jeans were fashionable.

GarlicMile · 23/06/2025 19:26

What's with the sudden stream of threads about women's clothing and 'modesty' as related to Men Looking At Women In Clothes? It's annoying, and suspicious.

Are all these OPs you under different usernames, OP, or is Mumsnet currently being targeted by a 'modesty' movement?

Bubblebubblepoppop · 23/06/2025 19:33

Where are you shopping, 2012?

Pretty much all jeans are some sort of wide legged style these days. They have to cling somewhere (to your point about them 'accentuating' your rear) otherwise you may as well just wear a black bag!

Also I disagree tbh, most wide legged jean styles make my already pancake butt look flatter.

WhatMe123 · 23/06/2025 19:34

The fashion has moved more towards looser styles op. Have you not tried on wide leg or barrel ones?

Gepl · 23/06/2025 19:34

I thought wide legged jeans were on trend?

If something is too tight, I get the bigger size.

WhyWouldAnyone · 23/06/2025 19:40

I can't agree.

Most men I know detest mom jeans, barrel leg etc. Most women defer to fashion and their own tastes rather than men's though (thankfully).

Princessfluffy · 23/06/2025 19:42

Why not opt for wide leg or barrel jeans, these are plentiful OP. I’d also avoid anything with stretch just go for 100% cotton

Sofiewoo · 23/06/2025 19:43

Do you leave your house? This hasn’t been the case for literally years.

I must have been in about 7 shops earlier and couldn’t find a suitable pair that don’t cling to me.

You must by buying into the idea that the smaller label size is better whether it fits or flatters you. I guarantee I could go into any shop on the high street right now and not only would most things not be tight skinny jeans, but in many I would actually struggle to find tight jeans.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/06/2025 19:46

LemonLime2 · 23/06/2025 18:27

I did try a couple of wider legged pairs but they were still of a style which accentuates the rear.

Actually accentuates? I mean... you can pretty much see the shape of people's bums in most jeans. If you're concerned about clothes being focused on the male gaze, I don't really think jeans are a worthy target. They fully cover legs and bum and are available in a wide variety of styles and sizes. As do men's jeans.

Whosenameisthis · 23/06/2025 19:47

Mt563 · 23/06/2025 18:16

You either need to size up or find wider styles, there are plenty around now.

How to say it without saying it 😂

12doublerolls · 23/06/2025 19:49

so woman can’t possibly like that style op? I wear them for me and because I like that fit.

Chipsahoy · 23/06/2025 20:22

I love skinny jeans. They are soft and comfortable and stretchy. Super high waisted with a sweatshirt you.
i wear country boots or wellies all year around, never wear sandals as we are very rural / farmers so any wider leg ones would flap about and get in the animal poop…
Everyone wears them around here as most are landowners.

GrandHighPoohbah · 23/06/2025 20:23

Where do you live OP? I live in a big city and loads of men (usually younger) wear tight jeans.

I have bad news for you, they’re back. I was about to buy pair of wide leg Zara jeans online earlier today, until I noticed they’re “low rise”.

I would say that the return of the low rise seems to be a milder incarnation of its early 00’s pube flashing predecessors but even so, it’s a no from me! Been there, done that and had a much flatter stomach the first time round!
