Flights and hotel booked but really don't want to go!

As the title, outlay currently is just over £500 for 5 day break.

I'm just dreading it tbh.

It's only northern Spain but is going to be unbearably hot (for me) over 32°.

Not just the heat though, I realise that the hotel is a few km from the centre (my mistake) and to visit any of the surrounding areas will require taxis to and from hotel, then trains. Just too much of a faff.

Dh has no problem, whatever I decide, just can't seem to summon up any enthusiasm, don't know what possessed me to book really (back in February).

So, AIBU not to go?

When you say Northern Spain, I assume from the temperature you mean Costa Brava rather than Galicia area? Even so, I think that 32 degrees is hotter than the average for this time of year. Just the luck of the draw with booking I suppose.

Do you have air conditioning and a swimming pool? If so then it should be OK. I don’t like it too hot either, but I think that when you are by the coast and have ways to cool off then it’s not so bad as when we get that temperature at home. We’ve had around 28 degree at home this last few days and I’ve been really uncomfortable, but having the same temperature when we were away at Lake Garda the previous week, it was OK because we had ways to cool off and particularly with the aircon we could get a decent night sleep.

Make sure you do the obvious things eg hat, high protection sun cream, plenty of water but also take a portable fan with you plus an ‘ice towel’ (see on Amazon) to help cool you down when out and about. But don’t feel you have to ‘do things’ just because you are away. It’s fine to sit in the shade, look at the view, read a book and have the occasional dip in the pool. Perhaps get a taxi into the town centre in the evening to get something to eat (or just a walk round and a drink if you have food at your hotel). Shops etc tend to be open quite late in Spain. A boat trip is a nice thing to do too.

I would go personally and take it as a chance to relax. Get up early before it’s too hot to do some sightseeing then siesta before going out for dinner and drinks when it’s cooler again. Eat some nice Spanish food, you’ll probably get nicer stuff out of the central touristy area.
Could you also afford to book a night or two at the end of the holiday in a different hotel? So check out early from yours and move to a different location for the end of the break?
Also the weather does sound pretty normal for Spain late June and there’s not much difference between 28/32C! so maybe next time book somewhere cooler!

We were starting to have doubts about where we have booked and how sensible it was , but it sounded like a good idea when we were freezing cold in the winter when we booked it .
its due to be 34/35 for the week we are away, I think we will chill out by the pool under a parasol when we can’t be bothered to venture too far , and enjoy someone else making our meals and doing the cleaning . We normally like to go and explore, and have a couple of things planned , but if we don’t make them it’s not the end of the world . I hope you go and enjoy relaxing , and good air conditioning!

What are your thoughts on hiring a car?
Have you checked if they have Uber where you are going?
You could make the most of the mornings and evenings and then have a siesta/read in the shade in the afternoon.

Chinsupmeloves · 23/06/2025 17:03

You go at a more leisurely pace, use shade, dip off in the pool. Hopefully there's AC. Just use it as an opportunity to relax more, different scenery. Xx

I’m surprised that Spain in summer is ‘only’ 32 degrees, that sounds quite lucky, could easily have been close to 40. I think 32 with air con etc will be manageable and unlike the UK, places in Spain are built for hot weather

Ladymuffins · 23/06/2025 17:12

Where in the North are you going? The atlantic coast (Galicia to Baswue Country) can be very humid, so 32 degrees could be a bit much, but temperatured usually don't go over 25/26 degrees in summer.

TequilaNights · 23/06/2025 17:17

32 abroad is different to at home especially with the rooms with air con to go back to and cool down.

Go and enjoy the break :)

HelenCurlyBrown · 23/06/2025 17:20

5 days? Just go and enjoy it. Rent a car to go out and about.

gsiftpoffu · 23/06/2025 17:49

Like everyone else says, just rent a car.
You can go out for drives in the early morning and evening and enjoy the views, the food etc.
You could visit museums with a rental car which will be cooler.
You can just relax in the hotel during the hottest hours of the day, presumably the room will be air-conditioned.

I think it will be a nice break away anyway. You don't have to go out in the heat.

Thank you so much, everyone, for all your useful input. 💐

I think car hire is definitely the way to go, it will certainly alleviate some of my concerns.

I’m in Spain atm (but south not north). It is absolutely gorgeous and I’m not a heat person. Get up early and do some things then, then take your time, read and sleep in the middle of the day. Don’t rush about in the heat, get to a pool if you can. Take plenty of books. I’m so relaxed I feel as if my brain has melted to a pleasant hum.

@Starlight1984 I know, you are absolutely correct.

I do feel so stupid, was expecting, ~27/28° but 32°!!

I'm sure I'll melt 🥵

But don't you have air con? Just go in for a break in the cold bedroom at lunchtime.
