Got a smart watch for my birthday - worried about heart rate

Layalittle · 23/06/2025 09:46

Since getting the watch my lowest heart rate has been 54bpm. I was just sitting down, I wasn’t asleep as I don’t wear it when I am in bed.
I’m a bit overweight and I’m not exceptionally active. So I’m a bit concerned this is too low? Can anyone advise?

In fact it’s 52! I misread it

Sometimes too much information is a bad thing! Do you feel fine? Have you had any problems that would make you think you have anything going on before?

I’m moderately active but heavy and my heart rate is a similar level as yours when I’m sat. My bp is fine and when I exercise my heart rate comes back to ‘normal’ quite quickly.

How long have you been wearing it? It’ll show you on the app the average over X period of time, that’s normally a good ballpark rather than the lowest or highest.

HelenCurlyBrown · 23/06/2025 09:50

It’s within the normal range for someone very fit. But under 60 could be bradycardia, so might be worth getting it checked out.

Layalittle · 23/06/2025 10:07

I’ve only been wearing it a couple of days so I’ll get the average in a week or so. I’ve had health anxiety about my heart in the past so it’s a bit triggering for me. A couple of times I’ve thought I’ve either got POTs or a thyroid issue maybe.
But 52 does seem very low to me. Maybe I should make a GP appointment. I don’t have chest pain or anything and I can walk long distances up hill and so on.

You can make a GP appointment if you're worried, but to me that seems normal as mine is in the 50s if I'm not particularly fit, and has been in the high 30s when I was doing a lot of exercise. My dad also always had a low resting heart rate (in the 50s) and he didn't do masses of exercise except going on long walks at the weekend.

BeeCucumber · 23/06/2025 10:26

Take the watch off and put it in a drawer. It’s not for you.

FairyRobot · 23/06/2025 10:29

I wouldn’t worry personally. My resting heart rate is mid 40’s. I did speak to the doctor about it once, and she said if you’re not experiencing symptoms such as dizziness/fainting etc then what’s normal for you is ok.

Nearly50omg · 23/06/2025 10:32

There is only one smart watch that is medically approved and accurate and I doubt you have received a £700 one of those? All the other Fitbit’s etc are NOT accurate! Take it off and stop looking at it as you clearly have medical anxiety going off into the realms of thinking you have pots etc!

StillTryingtoBuy · 23/06/2025 10:36

I think no harm making a GP appointment to discuss to be honest, that is what I would do in your circumstances.

ProcrastinatingTeacher · 23/06/2025 10:37

Sounds like the smartwatch could be justifying itself well if it's highlighting a possible issue.

Get to the GP, be sure and then keep an eye on it in future.

BertSymptom · 23/06/2025 10:41

I had similar worries when I first started wearing a FitBit. My resting heart rate is usually in the low 50s and whilst I am not overweight I do no exercise whatsoever so can’t be described as fit.

Turns out my Dad has similar and had some issues before planned surgery when they noticed his low heart rate. But its just normal for him and must be normal for me as well.

If it’s causing you anxiety though, take the watch off. I have to do that during pregnancies or viral illnesses where my heart rate changes and I get obsessed.

TotallyAddictedToCoffee · 23/06/2025 10:45

Mine goes as low as 38 while I'm asleep, I've had a 24hr monitor and my Cardiologist isn't worried - it is, apparently, normal for me

Speak to your GP if you are concerned and get 24hr monitor, but in the meantime, don't worry

SaturdayDream · 23/06/2025 10:47

I don’t think it’s anything to be worried about.

Layalittle · 23/06/2025 10:50

I’m going to keep an eye on it over the next week. Then I’ll make an appointment with my GP if needs be.

I’ve had heart anxiety before as I mentioned which I had a 24 hour ECG for.
It didn’t show anything significant up except a few skipped beats which they said weren’t a problem.

The reason I got this watch for my birthday was to measure my steps as I’m trying to lose weight at the moment and in a calorie deficit.

OP posts:
party4you · 23/06/2025 10:54

It’s a normal heart rate.

party4you · 23/06/2025 10:56

Sorry but I think it’s pretty ridiculous to be taking up a GP appointment for a normal heart rate especially when you’ve had 0 other issues.

Lanzarotelady · 23/06/2025 10:57

So you have anxiety, and you're now watching your HR and want to go to the Dr? Put the bloody watch away and just go for a bloody walk! The watch isn't for you, you clearly cannot comprehend the information!

BaconMassive · 23/06/2025 10:58

52 sounds fine

Sherararara · 23/06/2025 10:58

Take it off.

cherrycherrypickin · 23/06/2025 10:59

I'm not sure that a smart watch will help your health anxiety. Too much data can be a bad thing. What about a basic step counter? As several PP have pointed out, a resting heart rate in the 50's without any other symptoms is often totally normal.

Pippa12 · 23/06/2025 11:00

It’s a normal heart rate. Are there other issues causing you concerns? Light header/dizzy when standing up from sitting down/ fainting episodes? If not I would not worry and continue. It’s just your normal. Consider turning the function off if you’ve got health anxiety, it won’t help you.

Good luck on your weight loss journey!

ObliviousCoalmine · 23/06/2025 11:02

Yeah a smartwatch is only going to feed into an anxiety; you've had it less than a week and it’s already triggered it. A cardiologist has cleared you, take the watch off.

SillyMillieMops · 23/06/2025 11:10

Mine regularly tells me it’s dropped below 40bpm for 10 consecutive minutes or more. As long as you don’t have any other health problems I don’t think you should worry unduly.

ladyofshertonabbas · 23/06/2025 11:12

A heart rate in the 50s can indicate you're really fit, but you suggest that's not the case. Some people just run low- I do. It's not cause for alarm on its own.

TangerinePlate · 23/06/2025 11:15

Just seeing this thread.

Spotify pushes some “well being” app on apple watch.Apparently only to be used for general well es purpose and not medical one.

It’s all great to “listen to your body” and “detect changes before you feel them” but my first thought was it’s hoing to play havoc with people’s minds and create hell of a lot of health anxiety.

Mental.

Take it off @Layalittle
