Petrol pump & full grocery shop

Inspired by a comment on another thread. Is it reasonable to do a full Tesco / Asda etc shop while your car is at the pump and there's 15 cars behind you? And it's rush hour. This is not something I do, but have been a victim of!!
AIBU - It's inconsiderate
AIBU - It's fine

Your poll options don’t make sense but of course it’s inconsiderate

LlynTegid · 22/06/2025 09:36

It's a shop that sells fuel amongst its goods. The unreasonableness is that if demand is high at particular times of day on a regular basis, the shop does not employ more staff.

Don't blame customers.

Poonu · 22/06/2025 09:37

Oops sorry about that @StoorieHoose It was just on the other thread somebody suggested that they should pay for their petrol, park up and then do their shop but I have literally never seen anyone do that.

I would pull my car forward from the pump, pay for my petrol then do my shop… but if there was a big queue to pay I may be less inclined to queue twice, and I think the pump would still be unusable whether I had pulled forward or not.

AbzMoz · 22/06/2025 09:39

No, of course that’s not on. There are parking spaces to pull into for this reason.

takealettermsjones · 22/06/2025 09:40

How are people managing to do a full shop in a petrol station shop? They are usually smaller, with the 'main' shop in a completely different building, aren't they?

Poonu · 22/06/2025 09:40

@LlynTegid well, I do to a degree blame the customer. They have agency they can choose not to spend 15 minutes faffing around in-store lol. However it is a good time to collect the detritus in my car while I wait.

It's nothing to do with staff: it's people leaving their car at the pump that is the issue here.

Poonu · 22/06/2025 09:41

@AbzMoz I have never seen anyone use these, unless they have just come to pick up some bits and not petrol.

The scenario doesn't make sense. The shops that include the counter where you pay for petrol are not full supermarkets and it isn't possible to do a "full shop" in there. It's annoying if someone chooses to faff about picking up a few groceries while leaving their car hehind but not entirely unreasonable.

If they are leaving it there, walking across the car park to the actual supermarket to do a "full shop" and coming back 50 minutes later that is obviously unreasonable and I suspect has never happened.

There’s a Tesco Express with a petrol station near me. I’ve seen people leave their car at the pump, going to pay and coming out with a couple of bags of shopping.

Reallyyyyyy · 22/06/2025 09:46

I had this a while ago. But worse.

my punp was empty and no fuel. The guy in front driving was sat there watching something on his phone. His wife went in to pay and shop. I waited 10 minutes before I went and tapped on his window and asked him to move and wait in the bays over. He looked absolutely shocked and suggested he wasn't allowed to do that as they had to pay petrol first.

I had a huge queue behind me. A huge fuel truck the other side who was refilling pumps and he's sat there watching some crap. Most put out I tapped on his window.

I said pay at the pump. Or get out, pay for your fuel. Then move and shop.

I think I embarrassed him and he finally moved forward. Mrs came out with quite a few bags!

Me too. I have seen this many many times.

Ah this was my post on the other thread - if I can just state there was no queue in the shop to pay and there were plenty of separate parking places away from pumps. The fact was the woman wafted around taking 10 to 15 mins getting other bits oblivious to the fact there were now huge queues for the pumps.

Poonu · 22/06/2025 09:49

@Crikeyalmighty yes thank you. I was nodding while I was reading your response and agreeing.

OP posts:
AbzMoz · 22/06/2025 09:51

@Crikeyalmighty exactly. I don’t think anyone would really object to grabbing a loaf on the way to the till, but dithering over the next few days breakfast, lunch and dinner is an entirely different (and IMO uttterly rude and unacceptable!) thing!

There’s a pretty decent sized Tesco next to the pumps in a small town near me. Could totally do a full shop there. The only other option is the co-op which isn’t much bigger or travel to next town.

I wouldn’t park at the pump though if doing a proper shop I’d shift the car first. 😇

spoonbillstretford · 22/06/2025 10:04

If it was busy I wouldn't. If there were loads of pumps available then I'd get my shopping. I've never bought more than one bag of stuff in a mini supermarket though.

Gardenbumblebee · 22/06/2025 10:10

I was waiting behind someone filling up a few weeks ago (extremely busy petrol station) and after he filled up, he got back in the car and parked in one of the bays so me and all the other drivers could start pumping while he went to pay. I have to admit I've never even thought of that! I assumed some sort of alarm would go off or my licence plate would immediately be sent to the police if I turned the car on before paying.

I’ve seen people pay at the pump then go into the shop and come out with a bag without moving their car!

Growlybear83 · 22/06/2025 10:19

The Tesco at the petrol station I use is big enough to easily get enough shopping for several days.. i pay for my petrol at the pump and if I need things from the shop, I move my car to one of the parking spaces before I go in. If I need shopping and the pay at pump facility isn’t working, which happens from time to time, then I move my car before going into the shop. I think it’s incredibly rude to block a petrol pump for ages unnecessarily.

TheNightingalesStarling · 22/06/2025 10:24

I had to use one once which had a Subway inside. The queues took ages as people left the car at the pump.

Its not as bad as our local one if you happen to want to refill at the same time as Amazon (seriously... its a queue of 30 Amazon vans, all of which have to use the pumps on the same side...)

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 22/06/2025 10:27

We have a SPAR attached to our petrol station where you can get takeaway coffee and hot food - the queues can be ridiculous sometimes and cause huge tailbacks as the cars end up queuing on the main road to get in.

Whenever I need to do a bit of shopping, I move the car into a parking bay and then go in to pay.
