Hello everyone, I just want some advice please. So I moved in to my council house in October last year, when I moved in I had my 2 recycle bins and 3 brown garden waist bins and no general waist bins in my garden, my next door neighbour had a bin in her garden with my house number on it and the house down from her had my general house waist bin with my house number all over it. So the women next door knocked on my first day introduced herself she was nice so just left that bin for her to keep and because I wanted the other one back, so I waited and waited and the women 2 doors down didn't but my bin out for about 2 months I think it was it was after Christmas any way so I got it back and that was that and just about 3 weeks ago I put the bin out to be emptied and she sent her 10 year old son up to take it back and when I seen him I was in my 4 year old daughters room so went to the window and said can you put my bin back and the women was stood there with a baby in her arms and started to shout its my bin she was swearing and everything it was really pathetic so I just said its not you're bin its mine its got my house number all over it and she kept shouting and took the bin in then put it in her back garden. So I phoned the council and the council who I rent off but no one will help me and im being told I have to pay £35 for a new bin. I've filled the 3 brown bins with my rubbish because I didn't want 3/4 weeks of rubbish in my garden and the bin men and saying they emptied my bin because next door have one of my bins so its becoming very annoying, can anyone help at what to do ive spoke to the women next door shes saying my bin with my house number on it is hers because she says it was there when she moved in I tried to explain to her that it wasn't hers and it doesn't matter how long you've got a bin for if its got someone elses number on, its theres any way it seems like im living next to people with very low intelligence and common sense and I seem to be hitting my head off brick wall and just to add I found out today the women who lives 2 doors down puts my bin that is a old bin BTW in her kitchen when she goes out so I can't just go get it out her garden when shes not in, if you've read it all thanks and thanks for any help, im dyslexic if this doesn't make much sense please be nice 😀

Could you just order a new bin from the council website?

I understand that you think you’re entitled to the original bin but honestly is it worth the hassle? It is also likely that as a new resident you can perhaps more easily request the replacement one for a few quid. The neighbour also needs to change the number on the bin to her own.

It's £35 for a new bin it just seems crazy that I have to pay that when 2 of my neighbour have got bins with my house number on it, ive got a 4 year old daughter with additional needs shes being assessed for autistic she can't talk gets very distressed round people and people who shout, it just doesn't sound right to me and shes in nappys still she only goes nursery for 1 hour a day because they can't deal with her needs, its not cheap having a child with additional needs so the extra cost when I have 2 bins there with my house number on sounds insane to me

You either go and collect your bin(s) and tell the neighbours never to touch them again, or you buy new ones. Not sure what else there is to do.

If they pinch the new ones, since you just bought them and there's no argument over ownership, you could report the theft to the police.

Cas1988 · 21/06/2025 19:13

Are you allowed to go into someone's back garden and take you're bin back, you get to you're back garden from you're front garden and shes got a ring door bell no back ally on my street

Maybe find out who your local councillor is and contact them. They might be able to help.

peirdolona · 21/06/2025 19:15

Contact you estate warden and he can get the bins back for you.

fatgirlswims · 21/06/2025 19:18

So you were offered a waste bin with you number on by next door neighbour and declined it because you wanted a different bin with you number all over it?

You got the bin you wanted but didn’t you ask for it? You had no right to assume any bin was yours - there was no bin at the house you need to assume when you move in you do not have a bin and report it to the HA. Did you leave them with no bin?

I think you need to call the council and ask for them to give you a bin or you just need to buy a bin.

Cas1988 · 21/06/2025 19:19

I did report it to them they won't get involved my council wont help me. I've phoned them 4/5 times about this

I've not assumed anything its got my house number on they live at number 58 and have my bin that says 62 on it and the house i live at says 62 on my front door so incase im going mental here or something I think that's my bin, I phoned the council and they said its my bin and to take it back but shes not put it out yet and no I wasn't offered a bin from next door shes also got a purple bin with my house number on but she uses to for general waist but all the other houses have got the red bin and that's the one the women 2 doors down as got its clearly got my house number on so no I didnt leave her a bin why the hell would I do that

I think you are ranting at the wrong here person OP.

Legally- if it’s not there when you move in to a property and it’s not on the inventory then it’s assumed in the legal, factual sense of the word you do not have one and the people who you rent from have the responsibility to provide you with one. You can contact shelter if you need more help.

I hope I clarified this enough that you can contact the council and use this information to help you.
