A medical one

So I had a pal round this afternoon lobbing off a good chunk of our conifer in the garden.

I was helping out cutting down the cuttings and tidying them into a corner of the garden (I’m a guy btw).

in the process of clearing twigs and cuttings I lifted the extension cord for the chainsaw and felt a bit of a shock. Enough to be like ahh that was fucking sore.

no visible injury but looking at the cord it was frayed (clearly on the part I touched). Pal was like must be a part of the cord that got jammed ina door one time.

anyway I’ve had no visible issues since then just give me a bit of a shock at the time.

my question is should I be concerned? I’m 40, no health issues, don’t have any burns, or feel any issues with my heart. Had a few beers as we were cutting the tree down.

im not a tradesman and fairly cautious ‘risk assessment’ kind of person. Do I carry on as is or should I be more concerned and seek medical advice?

again not a tradesman so not sure what kind of shock an extension cord would administer?

You're a "fairly cautious ‘risk assessment’ kind of person" but you drank a few beers while using a chainsaw to cut a tree down? Gosh.

Anyway if you feel fine, don't have any burns, and don't have a pre existing heart condition or any cause for concern about your heart rhythm now, then there's not much that a medic can offer you.

But don't drink while using a chainsaw!

Totally irresponsible, alcohol and any kind of power tools. You were lucky, you want to see pictures of people who have been electrocuted,it's nasty!

I didn’t use the chainsaw. Again I’m not a tradesman so stay clear of that. Literally my job was my non drinking chainsaw wielding pal tied a rope to the tree. I pulled the rope to remove the piece he was cutting. Then when that was done I opened a few coronas as I was cutting twigs and piling them in a corner.

I wasn’t downing shots and climbing ladders with heavy machinery.

you never weeded the garden what having a cider?

Sorry just to clarify I did not climbing or operating of power tools. I was cutting twigs sipping beer. I lifted the cord and got a shock from a frayed part of cord. Not my extension cord to add.

I know alcohol doesn’t mix with a lot of stuff. But literally it was garden sheering over 3 hours with 4 bottles of corona.

What are you actually worried about ?

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 21/06/2025 18:39

Maybe it will have put a bit more lead in ya pencil???

Cheers, what I needed to hear.

just the beer made me google and you get the old ‘can cause unseen issuee’

my pal did say ‘it’s been a while since I’ve had a shock’ which put my mind at ease slightly. But I’m definitely leaning towards the paranoid over cautious sort. Lol.

The shock won't have done you any harm, but a future shock could kill you. Dispose of the chainsaw or get it fixed.

Dunno. After effects of an electric shock? The responses are reassuring me I’m overthinking and a tiny shock with no visible marks and such must be fine.

Not my chain saw but my pal put electric tape around the part he identified as being frayed.

Lifted the cord without thinking as just assumed it was kosher.

im sure its fine. Just it was nowhere near as bad as when the wife put that tense machine in me that ‘mimics child labour’. So I’ve probs had a very minor one.

Small shocks are fine it happens nothing to worry about. It's only a problem if you're actually electrocuted

tipsyraven · 21/06/2025 18:54

I’m still judging you for drinking beers around someone using a chain saw and pulling a tree down. Very stupid for a whole variety of reasons.

You will be fine.

ALWAYS use a plug-in RCD adaptor when using power tools.

That's like comparing driving while drinking to cleaning a push bike while drinking Confused

Berryslacks · 21/06/2025 20:39

Call that an electric shock @Kubricklayer ! A mere tickle by the sounds of it. My shocking time was about forty years ago. I was in the Kismet Club in South Shields. A right dive. I was very much the worse for wear and reached under a bench type seat to retrieve my handbag. I literally felt like someone had ripped my arm out its socket the pain was so bad. Because of my inebriation all that I conveyed to my friends was a slightly puzzled expression. They were completely unaware of my pain. I looked under the seat and saw a hole in the wall about six inches in diameter completely packed with severed copper wiring. I credit the alcohol I had consumed at the time with saving me from death by electrocution. I hasten to add I have no scientific proof for this and do not recommend any form of experimentation with electricity and alcohol.

Nannyfannybanny · 22/06/2025 06:46

Assuming you aren't in the UK as you talk about a cord, not a lead or extension. The nasty thing about electricity is it grabs hold of you, and it's difficult to get away..it usually burns a hole on entry and exit.
