Friend drinking and driving

Friend has a drinking problem. I have encouraged them to get help but they are not interested at the moment. I didn’t realise they have been drinking and driving until very recently but apparently they have been doing it regularly. I considered giving the reg number to the police, would they do anything?

Do it. When I was a teenager a good friend of mine lost her 8 year old brother to a drink driver.

I wouldn't hesitate to, I think drink driving is one of the most selfish acts and tbh I'd be reassessing my friendship with them

NeedForSpeed · 20/06/2025 16:48

Yes. This will be flagged up locally against the vehicle and their name. If the vehicle is checked, the flag will be seen and they'll be much more likely to be pulled over.

If you know the routine of drinking and driving ie leaves home every morning to drive to work at 6am after an all night session, or leaves the pub after fifteen pints and drives home then please tell them that - addresses, times etc will give them the opportunity to sit up and wait for them to pass and pull them over at the right moment.

I've done the sitting thing many a time. Traffic cops like to look for that sort of intelligence as well and will actively try to catch them at it.

Yes do it, how would you feel if they kill some one or injure someone and you know for a fact you could have prevented this?

AcquadiP · 20/06/2025 16:57

We had someone like this working in a company I used to work for. Apparently, he was seen drinking in his car during breaks and reported to HR who in turn reported him to the police. The police apprehended him, he lost his licence and his job. You need to report your friend to the police before some innocent person ends up badly injured or killed in an RTA caused by your friend.

LlynTegid · 20/06/2025 16:59

Would you want your friend to die in a car crash and/or kill someone? Report them with details of journeys if you know them.

Yes they would give them reg and address

If it was most other things I would say no, but because they could kill someone, let alone themselves, yes I would tell the police.

The police could probably then lay in wait. Best to do it now, yes she may get points or license revoked, before it ends up being more serious or a prison sentence.

Daisyqueen45 · 20/06/2025 17:05

of course I want to do something prevent him causing serious harm to someone. I have no experience of reporting to the police. He’s violent when drinking and I wouldn’t want him to know it’s me, given that he may know I’ve recently found out. I will be distancing myself as a friend as I agree it’s the most selfish thing a person can do. Thanks @NeedForSpeed that’s really helpful

Report... it could be the wake up call they need to address their drinking and if not you've still done the right thing

feelingbleh · 20/06/2025 17:11

You can report anonymously

twiddlingthumbs69 · 20/06/2025 17:12

How do you actually go about reporting? Do you just ring up your local police station or can you do it online?

There's a number you can call anonymously, but if you don't want to do that you can fill a form out online. Both in this link.

I agree with the poster below me too about calling 101.

Ring 101

A friend did this to her ex, as she was concerned primarily about her ex driving their daughter about whilst over the limit (and also uninsured due to a previous drink driving conviction). She gave them a photo go him, his car reg number and as much detail as she knew about when and where he would be driving eg going from his home address to his work address at 8 o'clock every morning. Unfortunately, he was never stopped.
