I dry my laundry in my garden and my neighbour is really unhappy about it

WashingWoes · 20/06/2025 13:33

I really don’t think I’m in the wrong here but keen for opinions which I will take onboard if I come off as unreasonable.
I live in an end-terrace house. Neighbour is attached to me. I peg my washing out to dry on good days. We are a family of four, lots of laundry and I much prefer to peg out than use the (expensive and environmentally unfriendly) drier. My neighbour HATES me for drying my laundry in my garden. Relentless comments about how she can’t enjoy looking at her garden from her bedroom window because she can see my (clean) laundry. About how it’s spoiling her enjoyment of her garden. Why can’t I just use the drier, for everyone’s benefit (not mine, see: bills; climate change…). It’s bad manners to dry ‘smalls’ outside - her husband might see my ‘undergarments’ … honestly it’s relentless. I recently received a birthday card from them (very kind, and appreciated) which said ‘Happy Birthday WashingWoes, we really love seeing your washing on the line, have a lovely birthday’. Please reassure me that I’m normal and neighbours are barmy?

I completely disagree. To me it says that the neighbours are more environmentally friendly minded.

I use nature's tumble dryer (it's usually breezy where I live) whenever I can.

You know the comments were about laundry on the front lawn, not about drying outside?

You can be environmentally friendly in the back garden 😂

Zov · 20/06/2025 23:06

WTAF?! 😂 What kind of utter fruitloop has a go at someone for drying their washing OUTSIDE ON THE WASHING LINE?!!! I put our washing on the line ALL YEAR ROUND. Unless it's utterly hammering down with rain obvs! I tend to pick a dry day/dry morning to do it - so pretty much hang the washing out for much of the year to be honest.

Having a go at someone for hanging their washing on the washing line is like having a go at someone for parking their car on their own drive, or wearing socks and shoes on their feet! 😱

cadburyegg · 20/06/2025 23:07

Absolutely pissing myself at the idea of hanging washing out not being in keeping with nice posh areas, dahling.

My parents were always a bit funny about hanging washing out too - they never did/have done it. My mum still comments about me putting washing out 😂😂

I LOVE hanging washing out. It is one of life’s pleasures. The only sad thing atm is that I’ve had some building work done and about to have some landscaping done in my garden so I’ve had to take down the washing line for now 😭😭 fortunately my minky airer (which an ex bf bought me about 15 years ago!!!) is able to take most of the strain 👍

Gasp shock horror, we even have a climbing frame in the back garden too!!! And sometimes I forget to tell the kids to tidy up their bikes etc which is most unbecoming of living in a naice mc area. I know, I know I’m letting the side down.

Zov · 20/06/2025 23:12

Urgh I'm glad you're not MY neighbour @cadburyegg 😖

😆 #joking

fair enough, but I would question how much your needs are met if you believe that 😂

Bourneo · 20/06/2025 23:13

Do the neighbours the other side of her peg their washing out?

Buy 2 packs of huge pants. Write
BUGGAR OFF.
and hang them for her side to view...
Honestly I hope you never engage into chat about such rubbish..
If buy a gimp mask and hang that out.

Buy a huge pair of white boxers or y fronts.

Get some cooking chocolate very cheap milk chocolate.

Smear the pants with the melted choc and hand them out.
I know someone who did this.

How did your parents dry their washing (all year round) if they never ever hung it out? When was this? (Like what decade/what era?) Did they just tumble dry everything? Or have a washer dryer? If that's so, then what a horrific waste of electricity! I know a couple of people who never hang stuff out, and tumble dry everything. Not snobbery, but laziness. Baffles me!!!

Your neighbour is batshit crazy. 🤪

Serpentstooth · 20/06/2025 23:18

Les Dawson, comedian, hit the big time with a TV show and decent income. Hurrah, big new house. Mrs Dawson happily washed all the new linen and hung it out. Knock on the door 'hello, I'm your insufferable next door neighbour with an inflated sense of self-importance. We don't hang washing outside round here'. 'Thank you for letting me know'. Mrs Dawson fetched every item she could find and hung it on the line, whether it needed to be there or not, and continued to happily hang out her washing for years to come. People can be very odd.

Teajenny7 · 20/06/2025 23:19

I wish I had a proper washing line. I have got a useless rotary dryer. I try not to use the tumble dryer

No I don't live in Manchester. I live further south! I'm sure even Manchester gets more than 60 days of rain free days out of the 365 days of the year. 😆

Yes they moved to Lytham St Anne's i think.

My late Gran used to say that when you move up thats when the real problems begin.

I live near Oldham trust me we see more rain than a rain forest.

You'll notice, maybe you haven't got enough breeze?
My laundry takes forever to dry indoors, the difference with a few hours outside is massive.

Up here it's just too bloody damp for anything to dry outdoors in the few hours of daylight we get in winter. This spring has been exceptional but usually the ground is wet from about September to May.

I wonder if she is working class by birth and upbringing and has done well for herself, like a lot of boomers (my own mother included). So anything her mother did when she was a child is common and therefore should be avoided as she isnt "common" anymore.

Mrs Bucket type lol.

Some women and men are very strange about other males and females under garments and think it gives their partners ideas.

It doesnt bother me one bit everyone has to launder and dry clothes.
I dont care if they come from Chanel or Primark or have moth holes as long as the neighbour is polite and respectful.

These people must think there is a laundry fairy.

TheCoralMoose · 20/06/2025 23:51

I remember treating myself to a pair of VB jeans this was 22 years ago now.

I was a size 8 then and they were half price in a sale at Kendals.

The care label said dry flat or tumble dry at very low temp.

Nothing in the world would have parted me from those jeans and the most expensive tumble dryer on earth wouldnt have got a sniff.
I didnt even dare put them on the washing line in case someone took them.
I treated them better than my first car.

Drapeduboeuf · 21/06/2025 04:05

Your neighbour is bat sh*t crazy! YANBU

Onautopilot · 21/06/2025 04:12

Tell her to move to the States...washing on a line is prohibited in some states as being "Visual Pollution"...😂Presumably it's less offensive to build another power station for the driers! We were in Wyoming, less than 600,000 people and a lot of space/wind.

I LOVE seeing my neighbours washing line out. They have 2 young children and the line runs all the way down their garden, all the little clothes neatly pegged up It feels so beautifully neat and a little bit old-fashioned.

I think your neighbour is ridiculous, OP.

My DD came back to live with me with my one month old GS. I couldn’t wait to wash all his tiny clothes and peg them out. Even his little socks got pegged out ❤️
we filled line after line. It was the cutest thing ever! It even made my grumpy male neighbour smile.

Cojones · 20/06/2025 22:14

@WashingWoes is your neighbour called Pat?

There was a lady a few doors down from me who used to moan because I and her immediate NDN would peg out our washing. Current NDN is lovely and doesn’t give a hoot.

Please ignore, line dried washing smells lovely and fresh.

Not at the moment. Mine came in yesterday, rock hard from the sun! 😯 😊
