I dry my laundry in my garden and my neighbour is really unhappy about it

I really don’t think I’m in the wrong here but keen for opinions which I will take onboard if I come off as unreasonable.
I live in an end-terrace house. Neighbour is attached to me. I peg my washing out to dry on good days. We are a family of four, lots of laundry and I much prefer to peg out than use the (expensive and environmentally unfriendly) drier. My neighbour HATES me for drying my laundry in my garden. Relentless comments about how she can’t enjoy looking at her garden from her bedroom window because she can see my (clean) laundry. About how it’s spoiling her enjoyment of her garden. Why can’t I just use the drier, for everyone’s benefit (not mine, see: bills; climate change…). It’s bad manners to dry ‘smalls’ outside - her husband might see my ‘undergarments’ … honestly it’s relentless. I recently received a birthday card from them (very kind, and appreciated) which said ‘Happy Birthday WashingWoes, we really love seeing your washing on the line, have a lovely birthday’. Please reassure me that I’m normal and neighbours are barmy?

try pointing out that if she continues to complain about a legitimate activity you will have to discuss harassment with the local police.

I would, if you have 2 lines, keep the underwear on the line furthest away and therefore less visible to her.

JohnTheRevelator · 20/06/2025 17:04

YANBU. She sounds nuts.

sugarapplelane · 20/06/2025 17:04

She’s batshit! Tell her to mind her business. Who gives her the right to be the terrace police.
And to the poster who thinks putting washing out lowers the tone of the neighbourhood. You’re batshit too.

Tell your neighbour to FUCK RIGHT OFF.

In those exact words. She is a cunt.

At risk of coming across as 'old' is that language really necessary for what after all is just an ordinary thread, it comes across so classy.
I wouldn't speak to someone like that, especially a neighbour, its vile.

@WashingWoes sorry OP! I would be running a weekly advert taking in laundry!! who the hell does she think she is??

Talkingfrog · 20/06/2025 17:05

YANBU. Yoh are normal- your neighbour is barmy.

Personally I don't put socks/underwear on the line, it is put on an inside airer- I could be bother to peg undies.

I leave mine out all night to get "darked on"
(Don't know if you know that old MN joke)? 😂

Is that satisfactory to you? Out all night?

Spider willies!

Imbusytodaysorry · 20/06/2025 17:06

DoBestIKnow · 20/06/2025 17:08

My DB in Nevada, despite the heat, they're not allowed to hange their washing outside and must have a tumble dryer. Yeuch - expensive and carbon producing. My other DB when living in Germany, wasn't allowed to hang it out on his balcony on Sunday. Different places; different ideas. Maybe your neighbour's been influenced by other countries. Daft coot.

Thanks guys - just wanted to check that drying laundry was still acceptable. I’ve discussed this with a friend who suggested going to Anne Summers and buying some filthy/delicious crotchless articles to peg out…

Ha ha . As a very young person I house shared with two girls , we were Anne Summer reps. ur next door neighbour loved the morning after three parties and the garden line was full. His wife hated us. O

I don't often hear the words 'primark' and 'sexiest underwear' in the same sentence!

Yes but they do do an excellent line in bright red lacy underwear. You know, the sort men buy "for you darling"......

I had an ex that gave me the MASSIVE ick for telling me that he bought his ex wife some lovely underwear but she wouldnt wear it. He had spent ages in Primark choosing it.

Wasnt the main reason for ending our brief relationship but was certainly up there in the top 5.

Houseofpainjumparound · 20/06/2025 17:10

Hang out your collection of Swastika flags....

Your neighbour is insane... although I do tend to hide my pants as I dont really want the neighbours knowing I wear massive granny pants

SparkyBlue · 20/06/2025 17:10

OP ignore her and don’t even entertain her when she brings it up again in conversation. I often wonder what these people would do if they had actual anti social neighbours living next to them.

Mh67 · 20/06/2025 17:11

I put pants and bras on clothes rack but everything else out on my veranda.

AirborneElephant · 20/06/2025 17:11

I’m struggling with imagining a terraced house on the cover of real homes with a three acre garden! Something like this?

Manthide · 20/06/2025 17:12

I love hanging the washing out but neither of my elder dd - one because she doesn't want to look at her washing and the other because she doesn't like the smell of outside! That's one of the few things our ndn doesn't complain about! I must admit though I don't like seeing the neighbour at the bottom of our garden's washing and wish I could make the fence about a foot taller. I'd never complain as it's their right to hang out their clothes and I could always move!

AirborneElephant · 20/06/2025 17:12

Oh, and laundry is fine 🤣

BakelikeBertha · 20/06/2025 17:14

Just tell her that when she pays your electricity bill, she'll have a say in how you dry your clothes, but until then shut the fuck up!!

MN is always like this. You can swear as much as you like!

Thanks for the opinion, genuinely appreciate it. But my house is not a ‘state’, it was on the cover of Real Homes magazine and won an award for the renovation we did on it. Clean laundry outside does not a nightmare neighbour make. Just someone who wants free drying of their washing. It’s not bringing the time of the street down.

My grandparents had a terraced. As well as the line outside the back door to the gate they had one from the bedroom window to a tall pole down the garden on a pulley.

I used to love filling the lane when I was little and hoisting it high

If you've not got one I can highly recommend if it would work for you.

More space and blowing on the towels to dry them quickly.

Conkersinautumn · 20/06/2025 17:14

I'll admit that I haven't read the whole thread but I DO HOPE that someone has already suggested pegging out the laundry so that the shadow it casts reads various sweary comments 'fuck off' 'cunt' 'tits' etc

CanINapNow · 20/06/2025 17:14

I too am slightly obsessed/in love with hanging out my washing. I even enjoy putting on the airer! But pegging it out on the line is my true love. My DH teases me as I then stare happily at it all on the line for ages. I remember when DS was a newborn and I had to rush the pegging process and it made me very sad 😂
