I hate every single modern song and I can’t put my finger on why!

(To start, this isn’t me trying to be ‘edgy’ I just genuinely don’t understand!)

I’m 28 and I love music. I listen to a huge range of music. I like indie and rock and also dance and fun songs.
I also have some awful dance and pop songs that I absolutely love! I know there were some really cheesy pop songs in the 10s and some I absolutely love. There are some rap songs that I enjoy too.

However… there’s not a popular song out there right now that I don’t absolutely despise. Most songs I have to turn off when they come on. And I don’t understand why because is it really much different to some of the songs in the 10s that I was indifferent to?

What I don’t understand is how all my friends are loving and singing along to all of it?

Lose control by teddy swims? God awful.
Beautiful things by benson Boone? I have to turn it off.
Too sweet by Hozier? One of the most dull and boring songs I’ve ever heard.
Tipsy? Fucking irritating.
Pink pony club? The most bang average song I’ve ever heard, why is everyone raving about it???

I’m not sure I can put my finger on it, I am open to listening to all sorts and I’ve always liked most songs but why do I hate every single one now (and why does everyone love them)??

And we had the same issues with manufactured music in the 80s - Stock, Aitken and Waterman, anyone?

Not a good comparison. SAW were indeed crap, but they were only a tiny slice of the music industry then. The entire music industry today is full of SAW level.

If you were to do a Live Aid concert today only made up of today's "artists" (few of those), what would the line up be? Pre-packaged Disney product Sabrina Carpenter would be in it, that's the level music is now at. Music in the 80s had her level in Bananarama, but Bananarama were the lower rung then, today they would be in the top rung such is the drop off.

Rap (nursery rhymes over a stolen beat) isn't music.

This music producer gives a good explanation on why music has deteriorated.

Find songs you like on the radio, add them on a Spotify like list and then go to 'song radio'which will generate other songs of a similar flavour.

A trawl through bbc sounds for artist in residence shows is good to hear things you've never heard of.

Or (a 21st century version of what I used to do when the music press was still a thing), read interviews with artists you like and see what stuff they mention and go from there.

Also Jools Holland is still good for discovering the weird and wonderful and next weekend there will be hours of Glastonbury coverage so you may see something you like.

Yes I love watching Glastonbury - good for discovering new stuff!
I think I discovered Gabriels a few years ago while watching. They are so good!

That's just not true, though - I had a look at this and was initially depressed, but once you get rid of the legacy acts and the very obvious pop products (Enhypen anyone?) then you're left with a solid core of artists that you could reimagine Live Aid with.

Yes Sabrina Carpenter is popular, she's making a pop product, but there are loads of really great young artists out there who aren't relying on pouting in their underwear, at least not all the time, anyway. Miley Cyrus just released an album that isn't Disney pop princess at all. Billie Eilish had a massive hit but the rest of that album is far better and is proper artistry. Bad Bunny is an arsehole but critically acclaimed (just not big in Britain). Lola Young is amazing. Sleep Token are mega popular. I can't stand Taylor Swift for all sorts of reasons but people in the business rate her. MCR have a bajillion dedicated fans. Kendrick Lamar is the Grammy-winning voice of part of a generation. Gaga is a pop queen. etc etc. There is a ton of good music out there! I don't want to listen to it all and some of what's on this list is absolute balls but I don't agree at all that music is SAW level these days!
