Silent reflux

Hello, I have been suffering with silent reflux for the last 7 years. I do not have the typical heartburn but most of my issues are in the throat . I am constantly clearing the throat, feel something is stuck, acid coming up etc. I’m fed of PPIs and really want something that works but will also not cause side effects. I have looked at diet books but some are so strict that they take the joy out of living. I’m not a great cook and also have a busy schedule so meal planning is tricky. Has anyone managed to get the reflux under control with natural remedies and not cutting down too much on trigger foods? Thanks

I have silent reflex, it’s a debilitating little understood disorder. I’ve literally tried everything, including paying for surgery, which didn’t help.

I now take Esomeprazole 40mg twice a day. It’s a high dose of the most effective PPI. Silent reflux requires a higher dose than is usually prescribed.

Dietary changes do help up to a point. I’ve completely given up alcohol and I don’t eat much fruit or salad.

It’s very hard to eliminate completely and I stopped taking the PPI as it didn’t help. Here’s what helps me
2 Metamucil fibre caps with glass of water in waking
half glass of water with cap of apple cider vinegar on waking
fruit smoothie banana berry celery kale nut fibre and kombucha which I sip on all day
lemon ginger tea that I also sip on
lots of small snacks
i can’t give up my coffee but have one but never in an empty stomach always after food
i don’t like breakfast but you need it so I boiled eggs and have 1 every morning usually before the coffee

Just to note I’m 56 and it started with menopause

Have you had a scope to check that there’s nothing else causing the reflux? No hernias?

mum2boys123 · 20/06/2025 18:32

Thank you so much for all your advice and experiences. It’s a horrible disease and really affects the quality of my life. I love eating and this has taken all the joy out of even treats as even a one off cheat ruins it. I do have hiatus hernia. Doctors have offered surgery to tighten my lower sphincter however that comes with its own long term effects and is not 100% effective. I just wanted to know if there are others who are facing this horrible issue and what has helped to alleviate the symptoms. Thank you once again for the supportive advice. x

Yes have had multiple scopes. I do have hiatus hernia but it’s not too big. Also it’s sometimes visible on scope and sometimes not. I do suffer from gastritis too but that’s under control as I do not have spicy or citric foods.

Try giving yourself a week of being really strict about food. Basically it’s irritated and needs to heal. When it’s healed you can reintroduce food gradually, see what the problem foods are.

You may find all you need to do is give up one of orange juice/sodas/coffee. If you feel better it’s worth it!

I had to give up caffeinated coffee for a while. Now I can tolerate it in small amounts- I tend to just have one first thing. But since it’s been such a while I can get away with more occasionally.

Thanks for your response. Does the apple cider vinegar and kombucha not cause more acidity? I do love kombucha but it’s slightly sparkling and have been told to avoid sparkling beverages for reflux.

It is acidic but it neutralise my stomach acid. I think the thing that helps me is to not have an empty stomach
