I have been offered a 1-year, fixed term, non-clinical post with a trust. A colleague just advised me to check that the year begins when I start in post. I thought this was obviously how things would work but I had another look at the ad, which says the post runs from May 2025 (which is actually when the advert came out - late May). My notice period is two months and I haven't even had an official offer letter. Does all this time eat into the 1-year contract? Surely not? I have spoken to HR and they said yes, it probably will but they can't say for certain?! They also advised me to email the manager, which I have done. I am awaiting for a reply. What is your experience/ insight?

AIBU can be unhelpful for this sort of question - worth reporting your post and getting it moved to the Work board

But for what it’s worth, as an ex-NHS HR person, it will depend on the reason for the FTC. If it’s a mat cover and the person is likely to return in May 26, then that’s when the contract would end. If it’s funding that has to be spent by May 26, then that is when the contract would end.

It could be either. The NHS is notoriously slow at getting funding for roles and adverts out and there are rules about how long it’s advertised for and between closing and interview.

Do you need DBS checks or do you have any conditions that could mean an occupational health clearance as this could delay the start date further.

I would advise that you definitely have confirmation in writing of when the post will finish.

The nhs is in such a precarious financial state that if funding runs much after next April it may not be available.
