Is it worth getting air conditioning units for bedrooms?

CoffeeLover87 · 19/06/2025 12:34

Hi all,
Is anyone else finding the summers just get hotter every year? I am not a big fan of heat anything above 28 degrees it’s become unbearable for me. We’re seriously thinking about installing air conditioning units in our bedrooms – the kind that do both hot and cold, so they’re useful year-round. Has anyone gone down this route? Are they worth the cost to install and run?

Thanks in Advance ! 😊

We have these units in every upstairs room.

It's fucking BLISS. They're quiet, they're efficient, they cool the room quickly and keep it cool, and we can use them for heat in the winter. We also have solar panels, so we can effectively run them off the panel energy.

Thischarmlessgirl · 19/06/2025 12:39

Yes, I’d never go back. Game changer

Dangermoo · 19/06/2025 12:40

Yes, I can highly recommend them. I have a unit in my lounge and before I thought about moving, I was going to get another for my bedroom. You do have to watch on electric. Lovely in the winter if you don't want to bother with fire or central heating.

BlueWorkDay · 19/06/2025 12:41

Are these the type of units with a hose that goes out of the window, or built in units, or something else? @ChandrilanDiscoDroid and @Thischarmlessgirl we have a hose unit, but I find it really annoying having to deal with the hose.

Are you able to post a link for the units you have please?

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 19/06/2025 12:42

Ours are ducted in. Installation took 1-2 days.

ByJoyousBiscuit · 19/06/2025 12:42

They're worth the cost if you need them surely?

I don't, I need to get use to the temperature, I hate going from a cold indoor room to boiling hot outside, and we don't even need fans at night, it's never that hot.

But if you find 28 unbearable, get them?

Some posters don't need the heating on all year round, they just put on a jumper when it's minus 10. I feel the cold, so I have a boiler and when I'am cold I put the heating on. Same thing.

Lovely to hear some positive feedback, Sadly, we haven’t got solar panels, so we’re stuck with a high electricity bill for now. Fingers crossed we’ll use less gas for heating this winter, though!

That's why I thought it was worth the extra money for a proper unit. Mine is Mitsubishi. Cost 1600 quid.

SleepingisanArt · 19/06/2025 12:44

Yes. Had them for a decade! I can't sleep if I'm hot so setting the temperature, putting it on quiet mode (for sleeping - means it will increase fan speed very gently if needed rather than a louder blast) and letting it cool the room for 30 mins before bed is brilliant. Wouldn't be without it now.

SleepingisanArt · 19/06/2025 12:47

Ours are Daikin - fitted in a couple of hours with the outside part raised off the ground by a few feet in case of puddles when it rains!

We've got one in our bedroom and another in the kitchen/playroom. 2 units plus outside box thing and all installation was about £4k, had them done in January this year. Ours are Panasonic.

Best money we have EVER spent.

SharpWriter · 19/06/2025 13:10

I also have Daikin. It was £2,500 but was more expensive than normal because I have sloping ceilings so it has to go nearer the floor. It's very economical (costs pennies if I run it overnight which I sometimes do on a low/quiet setting). It can also be used for heating. Best money I've ever spent - I can't bear the long hot summer nights and being woken at 3.30 by the dawn chorus if I have to sleep with the windows open.

DonteatthefamilyDoris · 19/06/2025 13:14

We've got one in out bedroom and one in the living room - my Husband fits air-conditioning for a living + I thought it was ridiculous when he put them in but I just wouldn't go back. Quiet, pretty cheap to run as once you're down to temp they turn off so poss 30-40p a night you use them.
He swears by Mitsubishi as the most reliable + that's pretty much all be fits.

doodleschnoodle · 19/06/2025 13:16

We are in process of getting a unit in our bedroom to replace the portable one. We use the portable one almost every night over summer so it will be worth the upgrade to a proper fitted unit. Probably the Daikin

Profpudding · 19/06/2025 13:17

Does anybody have the split air air-conditioning with the warm air in the winter and cold in the summer?
Are they sufficiently warm in winter?
I had them in Australia, but we only ever use them for Aircon, Didn’t feel the need to have them on for the heating

Coconutter24 · 19/06/2025 13:31

We have air con in kitchen and bedrooms and now wouldn’t be without!! Definitely worth having

CarlaH · 19/06/2025 13:39

I amn seriously tempted. Obviously companies will be inundated just at the moment but I might try and contact somebody when this heatwave is over.

Can anybody recommend companies or manufacturers which they have experience of or indeed people/brands to avoid?

It warms the room very quickly, IME, although we only use it for quick boosts in rooms that aren't that well heated by the central heating.

I have Daikins and I have only good things to say about them so far. They were an absolute revelation after trying to cool our London loft conversion with a portable unit with window hose or just fucking suffering. Best money we ever spent on the house.

RedRiverShore5 · 19/06/2025 13:46

How much mess does it make to have it fitted, we have a couple of portable units at the moment but had thought of having it fitted but don't want lots of dust, plastering and redecorating. The portable ones are fine but noisy.

Longhotsummers · 19/06/2025 13:48

This is an interesting thread! Can anyone with the wall units tell me if they have to be vented etc - I don’t understand how they cool! Thanks.

wheresmygoggles · 19/06/2025 13:51

Our living room, bedroom and kitchen are all upstairs (reverse floors). We have lots of windows. I have pollen and dust allergies so can't have the windows open in summer.

We had A/C installed 3 years ago and it has been a godsend for my fair skinned, heat sensitive family. The temperature in the living room was starting to tip 32.

Allergycream · 19/06/2025 13:58

Yes i have it in every room best money ive ever spent.
I have sensitive skin and the heat makes it worse with me breaking out in all sorts of rashes AC in all rooms is a life saver.
