Another dog drama!

I have a dog, love dogs they are great.

We just moved to quiet spot in the countryside. Our opposite neighbours have been weirdly unfriendly. (All the other neighbours have said they are indeed weirdly unfriendly people)
The wife leaves every day at 7:15 and the dog starts barking on and off from then on. If their cleaner comes the dog barks for 4 hours solidly. They leave it outside all day which is up to them but I have dropped the husband a text 3 times politely asking If he can keep the dog in a little longer in the mornings as I work nights. No reply, nothing 🥴 WWYD? it's the WORST way to wake up and I think it is SO inconsiderate of them but they just don't seem to care. For reference they live in a semi opposite us and our house is detached and was empty for 40 years prior to us moving in. They have had no one but the old lady next door to worry about since they moved in 10 years ago.

If they won’t respond to you there is nothing else you can do from that angle. I’m not really a dog person so I don’t know if that sounds bad enough to report to the rspca but the dog doesn’t sound happy.

I used to go and sleep at my mums house after nights sometimes as she lived in a house where there was very little outside noise whereas my house was right on a main road with lots of people around being noisy. Could you consider something like that. Or sleeping in a room the other side of the house.
Or I use a rain noise app to drown out background noise so I can sleep. I have it pretty loud. Also put a note up on the door saying shift worker please don’t knock. I know that won’t help with the dog but it might stop other people disturbing you.
My boyfriend swears by noise cancelling headphones but I personally can’t sleep with something in my ears or on my ears.

Earplugs.
They may change over time but can you imagine suddenly having to placate other people after all that time?
And 40 years empty?! Did you have to have a lot of building work/renovations to enable you to move in?

Complain to the council. That level of barking is not acceptable by anyone's standards. Poor dog.

Goldengirl123 · 19/06/2025 11:56

Report them to the council

DeSoleil · 19/06/2025 12:05

So unfriendly that they gave you a number for you to text them?

Daphnise · 19/06/2025 12:05

I agree, report the matter to the Council.
They might visit the couple as a first action.

Not sure how quick Council's respond- you could also try your local councillor.

I doubt the RSPCA just as a thought will do anything- they tend to avoid getting involved, even in much worse cases.

LlynTegid · 19/06/2025 12:07

Speak in person first, if that fails, then the Council.

isitmeamithedrama · 19/06/2025 12:09

Earplugs will help I work shifts and they’re the only way I get my 3hrs between night shifts.
Howard Leigh link and yellow ones are the best out there IMO

As for the dog, report to the council dog warden. Unfortunately the RSPCA/SSPCA won’t do anything

fruitbrewhaha · 19/06/2025 12:16

Poor dog. Plus it’s bloody hot at the moment.

Ring the council.

Meadowfinch · 19/06/2025 12:55

You could make a complaint of noise nuisance to the council. Is it excessively loud or just annoying? 7.15 is not particularly early.

If it is a rural area, noise is not unusual. At 6am, we have cockerels, tractors, dogs & deer barking etc. The countryside is anything but quiet.

Good luck with the house renovation.

LakieLady · 19/06/2025 13:58

Report to environmental health as repeated and prolonged noise nuisance. It will help if you can give dates, times and duration, especially including the long spells where it goes on for hours.

The council here (also a rural area) treat such complaints seriously. They send a warning letter initially, the second warning letter includes a threat of prosecution, and that often resolves things.

I wouldn't mention that you work nights, as it could give them the excuse of saying it's not unreasonable as most people are awake during the day and sleeping at that time is exceptional.
