To be worried about blood in urine?

Hi,

hope this is ok to post as I know it’s quite a TMI topic but I’m just a bit worried and don’t know what to do. I’m not a troll, I’m a longtime poster who has NC’d

basically I’ve just been to the toilet and instead of urine there was a lot of blood. The urine itself was a mix of darker red/possible clots and some lighter red too. I panicked a bit and when I wiped there was a lot of blood too.

sounds absolutely stupid I know, but I don’t know if I’ve just pee’d blood or if this was my period starting. It all happened so quickly

I had some issues about 10 days ago with what I thought was a UTI (stinging when peeing and cloudy pee) so went to the pharmacy and they gave me some sachets to mix with water (I think possibly cranberry extract or something to do with potassium maybe?) I took them as advised but then the next day I started getting thrush symptoms instead and I was going to go and get something for it but it seemed to clear itself. it’s been fine over the last week but started again yesterday and I was planning to get thrush stuff tomorrow at the pharmacy for it

because of this, I’m a little bit worried that I might have just peed blood, but equally I’m not sure if this was just my period or not. My period is late, but that’s normal for me, and I don’t have any cramps or sickness or headaches before it whereas I sometimes do which makes me think it’s not my period… but sometimes I don’t get that with it so doesn’t fully rule it out I guess. I’m absolutely certain that was blood in urine rather than my period but I’ve just used a tampon so I can tell for definite when I next pee.

sorry, I know this is absolutely gross but I just have no idea what to do if it is blood in urine. I’ve googled it but it keeps talking about how it can be a sign of bladder cancer- but that seems to be if it’s an ongoing problem whereas this was a sudden thing and a lot of it and I’ve never had it before. If it is blood in urine, am I best to contact NHS out of hours? Or can it wait until GP tomorrow? Or is it something I’d be better going to the pharmacy for UTI antibiotics? I’m otherwise fit and well- im mid 20s and just on medication for a heart arrhythmia but it’s well controlled. Apart from that I’m fine

sorry, i know it’s not the nicest topic but i just got a bit of a fright and don’t know what to do if it turns out it wasn’t my period. Any advice would be really appreciated x

If it happened and then stopped I wouldn’t worry, likely period. If it’s continuous and on going eg for weeks and weeks then I would make a GP appt

The other thing as well (just in case it’s relevant) life is a bit hectic at the moment because of family circumstances, so I don’t know if possibly stress could cause something like this? I can’t really think of how but I know stress can do crazy things to the body so not sure if it’s relevant or not!

It sounds like a UTI (I’ve had hundreds of them, always with blood in the urine). Go to the pharmacy tomorrow and explain your symptoms - even if you’re feeling a bit better. They’ll be better informed as to whether you need to see a GP. Keep drinking water or something fairly bland.

I think it's more than likely your period OP, but in saying that, I've had blood in my pee when I've had a kidney infection in the past, so it may be related to the UTI you mentioned. Have you had any other symptoms, a temperature, back pain, anything else?

I think unless you're convinced that it IS your period, for peace of mind, I'd book an appointment to see your doctor.

I would just check my vagina to see if there’s blood - with a finger, wrapped in toilet roll if you’re squeamish.

clots aren’t common in urine and it would be uncommon to have that much blood when you wipe especially without other symptoms.

Edited

I tried that (sorry, TMI I know) but there wasn’t anything. That’s why I decided to use a tampon to check for sure, I’ll give it an hour and check x

Does it hurt when you wee?

Ah thank you, and thank you to the other posters above too.

no, I’ve not had any of those things at all. I’ve been fine all day, just very tired which I think is more down to stress

over the last 5 mins I’ve started to feel a heavy achey feeling around my pelvis, it’s not awful at all (barely 1/10 pain) but I’ve had this feeling with my period before which makes me think maybe this is actually just my period!

The most likely scenario is a uti, as you've ruled out a period. However, I'd speak to a GP/nurse practitioner as blood in urine needs antibiotics. It can be a sign on bladder cancer, even once (doesn't have to be more than once as a ppl suggested) but that's much less likely than a uti.

AnonMJ · 18/06/2025 23:18

If it is not your period then please see the GP in the morning.

blood in urine can be a sign of certain illnesses which need prompt treatment.
hopefully “just” the time of the month tho.

I listened to a podcast earlier about a woman with endometriosis who had blood in her wee for years before someone spotted why. I'd call GP they can test a fresh wee sample for blood even if you can't see it

blackbirdevensong · 19/06/2025 00:57

I've had two kidney infections in the past 15 years, as a result of UTIs, and both times had fresh blood in my urine.

Antibiotics and a lot of water helped.
