Dogs driving me mad! Advice

SassyCrab · 18/06/2025 21:47

I have a French bulldog who is 3 years old and originally from Romania, he’s toilet trained but doesn’t like to hold his wee in at night so put puppy training mats down! However, he’s driving me mad and I’ve got to the point where I can’t stand it especially now I have a child which I want my house to be clean, even if the garden door is wide open if no one is sitting down stairs he will just wee on the rug! And it seems like he needs to wee about 20 times a day. Is there anyway of stopping this as I can’t stand it, my house begins to smell and it’s driving me insane! I’ve banned him in the front room at night, but it seems like he’s doing it during the day when I pop upstairs. He just does what he wants. Advice please

Have you taken him to the vets to be checked, 20 times a day is very extreme.

Largestlegocollectionever · 18/06/2025 21:50

Check for a UTI and crate train

momtoboys · 18/06/2025 21:51

I'm sorry - this is very frustrating. However, I have no advice because we have a rescue dog that has been doing the same thing for years. She will pee outside if she is outside and has to go, but mostly just waits to go on the pads inside. She's a big dog too. Maybe we have been too lenient because she had a terrible start in life (abuse) and we do adore her. We have also had two other dogs while we have had her (one died last year and we got another puppy) and they were both a breeze to potty train.

So he isn't toilet trained?.
Toilet trained means he won't pee all night... Back to basics...

Ablondiebutagoody · 18/06/2025 21:53

You've had a dog pissing in your house for 3 years? That's grim. Rehome it.

He is toilet trained, he’s just naughty! If I’m sleeping downstairs he will bark at the garden door to let me know he needs to go outside for toilet it’s only if I’m upstairs and not in sight he will go on rug or wee pad

He’s on steroids but tbh he weed this much before them so doubt it is that entirely. But yeah a vet trip is needed!

I guess so but I immediately clean it up as I have carpet cleaners etc, but I’d rather him not do it

One trick that might work, is try feeding him where he pees, as they (understandably) don't like to pee in the same place that they eat.

I had great success with this technique. Good luck..

TomatoSandwiches · 18/06/2025 22:00

If he's doing it when you leave then I'd think it's anxiety based, there are medications for this but I would hire a behaviourist specialising with FBs first to assess him.

Echomama · 18/06/2025 22:02

As a pp has said, perhaps crate training is needed. A friend with frenchies has one who used to do this but with poo. She ended up stopping after make her crate just small enough for a water bowl and a bed. It's crap having them in the cage so much but the short term of it did help teach it to stop pooing all over the house and therefore was allowed out during the days more and more.

AmberTurtles · 18/06/2025 22:14

Try simple solution from pets at home. It breaks down the enzymes and therefore smells which attract them back to the same spot for a repeat performance.

I'm a pet sitter and have been for may years and I've had just about a 100% success rate from it.

Also as others have said, vet visit and toilet train again, including setting your alarm and letting him out overnight.
There's zero need to cage dogs, this is a modern fad perpetuated by cage manufacturers and trainers but it's a load of nonsense as is the "they need their own or safe space" pure twaddle.

Good luck

Steroids have always made my dogs pee more frequently, when one of them was on them he’d pee in the night several times. Was awful but he couldn’t help it, just a side effect.

Definitely get him to the vets to be checked out. Hopefully he’s not on the steroids for much longer

Goldengirl123 · 19/06/2025 12:00

What do you do when it does it?

tinyspiny · 19/06/2025 12:03

If he is peeing indoors he is not properly house trained , it’s nothing to do with him being naughty dogs brains do not work like that . Go back to basics and house trained him properly or rehome him to somebody who will , presumably the rescue you got him from will take him back . Poor dog .

WombatStewForTea · 19/06/2025 12:04

He's not toilet trained and he's not naughty either. He's not doing to deliberately to piss you off

  1. get to the vets with a urine sample for a check up. What is he on the steroids for is there another option?
  2. ditch the puppy pads - it's confusing that he can wee in the house there but not on the rug (they're both soft 🤷)
  3. keep him with you at night. Get up and take him out for a wee.
  4. go back to basics with toilet training as if he's a puppy

The OP didn’t mention a rescue, most likely purchased from a Romanian puppy farm.

SassyCrab · 20/06/2025 11:27

Actually it was a Romanian rescue page I got him from which English women had set up, I’m not sending him back to a rescue, I come on here for advice not for someone to be judgemental. I’ve had dogs before who would have occasional accidents but not to this level. If he’s also not house trained why is it only when I’m upstairs he will pee where ever he wants but when I’m downstairs he will bark/wait by the door? Well if it’s not naughty then it’s laziness or a problem where he can’t hold in his wee. Apart from that he’s a very good/ well behaved dog

Bumble6 · 20/06/2025 11:48

He needs to go to the vets again as that doesn't sound normal. Is he a full male and scent marking or actually doing a full wee? I would also remove all rugs and mats if he only does it on them, sometimes I think it can actually encourage them to wee inside, especially once they have got their scent on it.

Ignoring your callous disregard for an animal, who the fuck do you think is going to want to rehome a dog that isn't toilet trained?

What you really mean is euthanized because you couldn't be bothered to train.

Why would you put a dog down because he’s not toilet trained?? Omg if people actually do this they don’t deserve to own an animal

i wouldn't. I think you missed the point of my post.

My response was to Ablondiebutagoody who thinks it's fair and reasonable to just "rehome it" as though it's an inconvenient object rather than a beloved pet and seems to think there are millions of people queuing up for dogs that aren't toilet trained.

I agree with what you said above! I feel like people do class pets as objects, which is unfair! I wouldn’t want to rehome him unless I sadly had too

I think you need to change your perception OP. Assuming the vet gives him the all clear, Your dog is not toilet trained. Toilet trained dogs do not regularly pee in the house. You need to take your next steps with your new perception of "my dog isn't toilet trained and I need to (re)train him"

I would not let him be downstairs when you are upstairs. He has to stay with you. You break the cycle of him doing wees indoors and go back to puppy basics.

get rid of the pee pads. Help him out make it simple - no pees indoors ever. At the moment you're expecting him to know "this surface is ok but this one is not". Keep it simple and help him. No pees indoors on any surfaces.

You need to train him as if he is a little puppy who doesn't understand.
