On less than my team £

I’ve been moved to another department to grow it and develop, I’ve knowledge in the field.
the team I am managing will be carrying out the site work, I will been overseeing their roles and general dept growth.
I’ve just found out my salary and it’s significantly lower than those I am managing. They have the qualifications and technical experience to carry out the physical work.
am I right to be pissed off ?

Did you agree to the salary before you accepted the position? Did you enquire as to how much your team are on.

It sounds like you've sold yourself too cheap to be honest. Of course, it's not ok for them to take advantage of that and in the light of the new information you have come across you should insist that your contract is re-negotiated.

It'll be fine.

This really depends on the roles. If they have qualifications and perform a role that you can’t, it may well be that the going rate for their job is more than yours. Just as (for example) a hospital administrator might manage a team of surgeons but earn less than they do. The manager is in an admin role so not comparable to the specialists.

We really need to move away from this idea that managers have to be paid more than their teams. I work as a highly technical sme with nearly 30 years experience and find it ridiculous that I'm the part all of my managers were expected to be on higher pay grades than me often when their only responsibilities were basic line management whereas my roles have required decades of knowledge and experience!
It sounds like a great development opportunity for you, but why would you expect to earn more than people who have been in their specific roles/profession for an extended period?

I used to work in IT recruitment and its very common for Managers to be on much less than the people they managed. Do you have the same qualifications that they have?

Ineedanewsofa · 17/06/2025 19:01

When I moved into management I was also on significantly less than some of my team and rightly so - they were highly qualified technical experts and I couldn’t do what they did. Equally they didn’t have the people management skills I have but I accept that my skills didn’t have the same money value as theirs

Upsetbetty · 17/06/2025 19:02

Do they do all do the same hours? What is the job?

KrisAkabusi · 17/06/2025 19:36

Can you do.the job of everyone you're managing? Or do they gave specialist skills that you dont?
