Should I complain bout this taxi driver?

I was in a taxi this morning and towards the end of the journey, the driver made a comment "where do all these people come from?" I was distracted in the back, sorting something on my phone, and I thought he was talking about the heavy traffic. I made a comment in reply something like "yes, and where are they all going?" and he replied "thieving, I expect". I was confused, looked up and noticed two black people had just crossed the road in front of us. He must have been talking about them. I was pretty shocked and the journey came to an end so I didn't say anything, but now I'm wondering if I should, because surely he can't be saying racist stuff like that to customers? My only hesitation is that I get taxis all the time and I'm likely to come across this driver again.

Yes because silence is complicity. We should always call out racism, Islamophobia, anti-antisemitism etc.

I get taxis a lot too. They all know who the local drug dealers and thieves are. I'm pretty sure nothing happens in town without the taxi drivers knowing about it. It's perfectly possible he just knows they are thieves or and their colour didn't come into it.

Presumably he saw something before you looked up that indicated they had been stealing/we’re going to steal. Or maybe they walked into the road without checking for cars - totally a comment I’d make about guys of any colour darting in front of my car and assuming I’ll stop!

I wouldn’t complain. If it really was a racist comment, he’ll make plenty more to others who see the whole interaction/‘event’ and will have a bigger picture.

You would of course not be unreasonable to complain, but I wouldn't use that taxi company again if you do.

What would I do, I'd mind my own business and carry on with my life especially considering you don't even know what he was actually talking about as you where distracted by your phone. You are actually the one making the assumption based on someone's skin colour

Half the black cabs I get in have an element of this. I’ve also had racial prejudice against me by non-white non-British Uber drivers…

The noble thing would be to challenge him there and then. Realistically, you aren’t going to change his mind and nor do you need some screaming match or hostility (because that is what it will be) with a guy in a small confined space.

i just roll my eyes and got about my day

GinnyandGeorgia · 17/06/2025 15:27

He must have been talking about them.

I wouldn't make a complaint if I hadn't seen who the comments were directed to.

As you assumed he was referring to two black men crossing the street and I doubt they were the only ones in sight, are you sure it's him that was racist?

I’d just get on with life. His views are his. Not worth getting aggravated about. 🤷‍♀️

Are you sure when he said 'all these people' he was definitely referring to two black people? I mean two isn't really a lot of people?

He could've been racist. Or he could've been prejudiced about people of certain ages, wearing certain clothes. He may feel he knows they're criminals?

He is entitled to an opinion and he didn't actually say anything that awful. He didn't say he thinks black people in general are thieves? If he does think that then good luck expressing it openly as that type of attitude wouldn't wash where I live.

But I would assume it was just people in general and the area getting busier over the years. Unless he explicitly said it was about race.
