What to do about a manager who keeps backtracking on what she said

My manager has always been the type to turn around and say ‘I never said that’, it’s becoming much worse now it’s constant ‘why have you done this’ - well you said to ‘no I didn’t’ or ‘why are you working this day instead of this day’ - I’m doing what you asked ‘I never said that’.

It’s driving me insane, I’m speaking to her about it later as it really affects my life having to keep changing childcare etc due to her change of mind and lack of remembering. What can I do going forward to ensure she either keeps her word or I don’t agree to changes?

Also how do I say it to her without having a go at her

Can you email her reaffirming what she's said, that way she's can respond yes/no. If she doesn't respond take it as a yes.

That way you've got a paper trail of her instructions.

Is it not something you can get in email, rather than verbally ?

So you can back up your verbal conversation about a day off etc 'dear sue, to confirm our earlier conversation I will be off on Wednesday 22 April'.

Could you not get your work rota by text or email and then it is writing.

Hercisback1 · 17/06/2025 06:26

Get it un writing, text, WhatsApp or email. Then she can't argue.

As others have said, confirm these conversations in email or have them by email in the first place. It could be a communication issue.

Paper trail. Always. Whenever you need direction on something, instead of asking verbally, ask via email or a work messaging service.

You can create the paper trail pp talk about. After a conversation email back and say just to clarify, you are asking for ... By this date...

Thank you everyone I will ensure to verify through email in the future. I guess I assumed if my manager verbally told me something, she wouldn’t then backtrack as if I’m just doing what I want
