AIBU to think adverts like this (from a brand loved by teens) does nothing to help pride and can turn people away

I don't think the woman in that ad is a raging sex lunatic, do you? It's a fairly mild bit of tongue in cheek innuendo with a tongue sticking out. Nor do I assume she's homosexual. She could be any number of things under the LGBTQ+ umbrella.

And sexual orientation is not sexual? Come off it. Disingenuous. The reason that 'homosexuals' have been persecuted, bullied, harmed over the years is because people think the way that they have sex is wrong, at the end of the day. There's nothing dirty or wrong about any combination of adults doing . Most of us have it, and a mild joke alluding to it shouldn't cause anyone to go in to shock. A joke which is unlikely to reach any children, and if it did it would go over their head.

I'm stunned at the hyperbole on this thread.

She'd have to be a bit homosexual, surely, to qualify?

....which of course is one of the many reasons I no longer bother with pride. It's not just the gimp masks and the "puppy play" (aka involving bystanders in your fetishism without our consent), it's all the "queer" people parading with their opposite-sex partners. (Bisexuality is a thing, but being a bisexual with an opposite sex partner is not something you need to demand acceptance for, because you already have that.)

What does a brand loved by teens have to do with it? Teens can be gay, teens also have gay sex, what’s wrong with that? You think all teens who get this advert are going to suddenly become gay? Being gay isn’t a choice. Pride is about celebrating one’s identify and advocating for equal rights. I have no issue with it. For me gayer the better.

Because people want to protect their teens ** and people shouldn't need to want to protect their teens from gay rights, but I can understand them wanting to protect them from this sort of sleazy imagery.

I'm fed up with gay rights and sleaze being put together. It's the sort of thing gay people have spent years trying to break away from.

And what's with your stereotypical images? You know gay doesn't have to equal camp, don't you? That you wouldn't be able to tell whether most people were gay or not?

** As they're growing up and learning about sex, they need to learn about healthy boundaries, relationships and sex. Nowadays it seems that we have to jump straight into teaching them about the more hardcore sides.

And no, this image was not hardcore, but what other event/ group would be supported by this sort of imagery from companies like this? In most other situations, (especially involving minors) it would raise red flags. Why doesn't it here?

Pride has become the stereotypes that people tried to avoid for years

What was once a movement to liberate and protect gays and bisexuals Has been turned into yet another win for consumerism more like.

Naomi Klein nailed this down in No Logo about 25 years ago

I'm glad someone has mentioned this. The drive to individualism and personal identity is a consumerist movement pushed by big capital. And those most enthusiastically embracing it are from the left/green end! So dissappointed that the Greens don't provide a consumerist critique of the idea that buying clothes, makeup, medical procedures and more will make you happy and somehow tru to yourself.

The reason we've been historically persecuted is because we were reduced to our sexuality. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth regardless of the intention behind it or how much of a non-issue it might seem to some.

Pride is banal anyway to young people,it’s mainstream so very uncool.

Are you gay op?

Why? No, I'm not, but I was a big part of the supporting scene for a long time. I’m not anymore.

ETA that came out wrong! Of course, I'm still a massive supporter! I just don’t do Pride etc anymore.
