And I think a lot of other people are doing the same.

What do you say to that?

Entirely unreasonable. Are you nureodivergent? I think you should divorce your husband, go no contact with your mother and hold space for the laugher emoji.
There I've set my boundaries

Seamoss · 16/06/2025 17:20

I also hearted your post to signify my good humour

soupyspoon · 16/06/2025 17:25

Oh so the new language is 'hearted' and I presume 'hearting'

So Ive hearted some posts.

I feel Im up to speed now.

In the rest of the world, not MN, I’ve been using the purple heart emoji for years to signify love and caring because the red one felt a bit too romantic for me.

It turns out that in emoji speak that the purple heart means ‘I’m horny.’ So I’ve been telling everyone - the ladies where I keep my horse, dh’s mate, my teacher from school who I keep in touch with still, BIL, etc that I’m feeling horny. 😂

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 16/06/2025 17:32

I've been doing the same.

It's a shame that we can't have nice things because of bullies - the laugh emoji was ideal, but sadly too easy to abuse by unpleasant people.

Just be careful how you describe it, though, when a funny post is hearted...

And how does that make you feel?

I'm not sure, but I had a dream last night where a giant cigar was chasing me into a deep dark cave and then my skin fell away from my body in tiny pieces. Then I realised it wasn't my skin at all, it was razer sharp teeth burrowing out of my skin. Then I saw my mother.

GinnyandGeorgia · 16/06/2025 17:46

It doesn't mean the same thing at all, but on a forum who cares. You're just sending the opposite to what you meant to someone, so it's up to you😂

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 16/06/2025 17:49

I'm wondering how much traction a "bring the laughter reaction back" thread would get. I've seen more posts saying they miss it than I ever saw complaining about it.

But Site Stuff seems to be populated entirely by miserable people who hate anything and everything.

Witchling · 16/06/2025 17:56

What the fuck has laziness got to do with it?

One person complaining has more weight than 100 person voting in favor. The terminally offended are exhausting, and I guess sites like MN can't be bothered to argue.

Someone got a laughing emoji on a comment and did the grown up thing, got all offended, upset, complain to MNHQ and there we are 😂

I do this too sometimes @soupyspoon

It's a shame the LOLing emoji has been removed, but I do get why, as it was abused. People used it to mock and deride, and it was very cruel sometimes, as people put posts up where they were upset/emotional, and some people put a LOLing emoji... (as I said, to mock and deride.)

Shame there wasn't some way of creating a post, and ticking a box to say you don't want the LOL emoji put against it. Then if you're putting something funny or quirky, you can leave it unticked and people can click it. (Makes sense in my head!) 😬

LizzieSiddal · 16/06/2025 18:06

Why did the laughing emoji go?

Is it cutbacks?

Oh I used the “applause” reaction as in to say “well played madam, well played” or similar. Although MN thinks that means thanks?

MandarinCat · 16/06/2025 18:18

I do the same. If someone writes something funny I ❤️ it

This is the kind of thing I genuinely want to do the laughing reaction to! Quick driveby lol and on with my day. I don’t want to read a whole thread that quotes the funny stuff with the laugh emoji! I might have to be terribly old-fashioned and just say “lol” to myself but not tell anyone on the internet that they were funny.

Yes, I thought yhe same thing - although maybe with opt-out by default.

Then, when you're deliberately posting something witty or funny and hoping to give people a bit of a laugh, you could just tick it and then let others respond with their appreciation, without clogging up the thread by dozens of people quoting your post and adding their own (public) laugh emoji.

I think that's a bit unfair, people were being proper nasty with them. Using them on posts where people had had horrible things happen to them (deaths/miscarriages etc).

I miss it, it was SO quick to tell someone they'd made you laugh, without all the quite, comment, find your way back to the right place in the thread & without making the thread longer just for that.

but blame the nasty posters for misusing it, not the people they hurt.

i don't blame MNHQ for doing away with it.

Yes, it was used on a post where a woman said she was suicidal. If people can't see what is wrong with that, they may have been part of the problem!

Calling · 16/06/2025 20:01

Whatever you do, don't open the door! It might be a giant emoji.

Sorry - didn’t mean to add to the confusion. If only there was an emoticon they could have that would show we were laughing…..

Seriously though, I hadn’t realised just how nasty some people had been with it. It genuinely wouldn’t bother me if someone laughed when I posted something seriously, I feel it says more about them than me, BUT if I was in a distressing situation I can’t say for certain I would feel the same way - so as much as I miss it, the laugh react is better gone. Or maybe reactions should be public so that everyone can see what a nasty cunt someone is as opposed to just the OP seeing it.
